                    Six-Pack for Saturday
-- Pistons, Spurs sucked it up Friday night and survived in difficult road spots, now they get Game 7's at home, as the NBA lucks out with three seventh games in this round.
-- Tom Hanks was a vendor at Oakland Coliseum in early 70's, when the A's had a dynasty, winning three titles.
-- Marlins-Devil Rays hasn't exactly evolved into a rivalry yet; only 10,017 tickets sold at the Trop Friday night.
-- Tampa Bay is 5-1 as a favorite this year, but problem is, they've only been favored in six of 42 games this season.
-- Angels' OF Tim Salmon is second cousin to the actress Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona, Broadcast News).
-- On the high school front, there is very good high school player in Albany area (Glens Falls HS) named Fredette, and he is, or will be, heavily recruited at D-I level, but I am told he is leaning towards BYU, due to his Mormon faith.

Saturday's List of 13: Why is the foul pole fair?
Read an interesting bookthis week, Why is the Foul Pole Fair, by Vince Staten. Ton of interesting minutae on various subjects, not all baseball-related, but book is framed around author taking his son to a Reds' game few years back. Here are some tidbits I learned…….

                      13) The tarp that covers the infield is 170 x 170, and weighs 1,000 pounds brand new, before any rain gets on it.

                      12) Legend has it that the mounds in some visiting bullpens are too high, creating the illusion of pitching out of a hole, when relief pitcher gets to the actual mound. Wound any groundkeeper be crafty enough to do this? You tell me………

                      11) Any baseball game with a giveaway, no matter how cheesy the giveaway, draws an average of 3,893 more fans than a day without a giveaway. Of course, the better the product, the more the attendance goes up.

                      10) When the Cincinnati Reds played at Riverfront Stadium, before moving into their new park, there were four different colored seats, and the red ones were actually the worst seats. You'd think to see the Reds, a red seat would be better.

                      9) A seat in a ballpark is twenty inches wide.

                      8) The average American waits in line 134.5 hours a year (20 minutes a day).

                      7) Architectural firms that design stadiums recommend one parking spot for every 10-15 fans, and one turnstile for every 500-750 patrons.

                      6) At Paul Brown Stadium, where the Bengals play, there is one urinal for every 54 fans. At Great American Ballpark, there is one for every 92 fans, leading us to believe that nature calls more in cold weather, or football fans drink a lot more during football season.

                      5) According to official baseball rules, the line from home plate to second base should run East Northeast, to keep the setting sun out of batters' eyes. Just thought you'd like to know.

                      4) To this day, the most popular model of bat made by Hillerich & Bradsby is the M110, the model designed by Eddie Malone, who played two years as a catcher with the White Sox (1949-50).

Malone had 62 career hits, but such stars as Al Kaline and Mickey Mantle used his bat model for large chunks of their Hall of Fame careers, and it remains popular, even today.

                      3) The field at Comiskey Park in Chicago can absorb three inches of rain (192,000 gallons) in a half-hour, then be ready to play an hour later.

                      2) A Cornell University study on tipping shows that if the worker introduces him/herself by name, his/her tip, when the time comes, on average, will be 53% higher.

                      1) The Star Spangled Banner didn't become our official national anthem until May 3, 1931, when Herbert Hoover signed it into law. mmmmm
