  • Biggest Upset in Major Sports History

What is the biggest upset ever?

When the Jets beat the Colts with Joe Namith? Im too young to know what the line or the money line was on that game. (14 pt fav = +1000 dog)

What were the Red Sox in the series after being down 0-3 to the Yanks? Im guessing about +1500 to +1800

Though it isnt one of the 4 Major sports, wasnt Buster Douglas over Tyson +3500?

If the Cavs somehow win this series... Would this be the biggest upset in sports history? After they were down 2-0 I think Pinnacle had -6000 det/+5000 Cavs
Thank you Ryan Howard! <--- ITS A WINNER!

    2012 CFB: 3-7
    2012 NFL: 3-3

Detroit's defense looks pathetic. That basket Gooden got was just a lack of hustle.

This would be a lot bigger than the Yanks/Sox 2004 comeback. The Red Sox were actually the favorite going into that series. If there was a line after game 3, I'm not sure what it was.
There have been some big upsets in Super Bowls, but I would say the biggest upset in my mind was the Nuggets first round win over the Sonics (in 1993, I believe). Any one game can go either way, but a series is an entirely different matter.
            Records:

            NCAA Hoops (38-34-2, +4.59*)
            NFL Sides (34-25, +12.15*)
            NFL Totals (18-14-1, +8.23*)
            NCAA Foots Plays (65-48-4, +21.47*)
            NBA Plays (4-1-0, +5.92*)

Here is one which goes back but I remember as a small child:
In 1954 Cleveland won 111 games and ran away with pennant(it was simply the league champions playing each other for WS with no playoffs) against the NY Giants who won 97 games.
The upset was not so much that the Giants won the Series but that they did it in four straight.

TP, I respectfully disagree. I believe the Sox comeback was the biggest upset in the history of sport (not to mention the biggest gag by a team in sports history). Their comeback was more than just winning four games. It was four games against their arch rival, the 'Evil Empire', the team that had kicked them and treated them like a red-headed step-child for 80+yrs, the owner's of The Curse, the pressure of a whole city, facing the greatest reliever in the history of the game in games 4 and 5 (and being down in game 4), beating the 'mystique' and 'tradition' of quite possibly the greatest franchise in sport, winning the last two games on the road...we could go on. This wasn't any best of 7 series. Is a #4 seed beating a #1 seed that huge an upset...one to rival a comeback from 3-0 which NO ONE had ever done before? Denver beating Seattle was big but I believe that was a best of 5. That was a #8 over a #1, I think. The Cavs still have to win a game and it would be huge, but biggest upset ever...imo, no.

I think a distinction has to be made between when the upset occurred.
In the case of the Red Sox, it was a great comeback being down three games to none to win.
To me however, the word "upset" means a team upsetting another team in a series or say in a one game series BEFORE the series starts.
If Sox had battled back and forth in that series, it would have been a great victory finally defeating ther Yanks.
It was a mighty feat no matter what criterion is used but as stated I define upset somewhat differently.

I agree with that...maybe 'upset' is the wrong word to associate with the Red Sox...perhaps 'choke'?

Whatever it was, I had never been so happy in my life(of course when they won the WS, that was even better).

                          Jackal

The Colts were 17 1/2 point faves over The Jets

Buster Douglas was a 37/1 Underdog vs Tyson.

The "Miracle on Ice" would have to be on the short list of greatest upsets ever, IMO.
