Miami was 34-40 from line in Game 3 (Shaq only 3-5), as Carter took 34 of Nets' 85 shots from floor, and Heat grabbed back the home court edge. Miami scored 111,103 in last two games, after being held to 88 in series opener. Nets took 65 free throws in the two games at Miami, but only took 20 in Game 3. Nets need to be better balanced on offense to beat the Heat.

Phoenix shot 37% from floor, missed 15 straight 3's, but took 2-1 seried edge despite scoring only 94 points. Clipper starting G's were 8-24 from floor, as Suns overcame third-quarter explosion by Radmanovic (14 pts in quarter). Would expect Nash to be lot more productive in this game. Nets, Clippers in same boat- need home win to avoid 3-1 hole with two of three left on the road.

      NHL analysis

Carolina lost chance for sweep yesterday. New Jersey had been 1-15 on power play in series, but went 2-11 Saturday, they got a goal less than 2:00 into game and grabbed control early. 'canes go home now to try and clinch; they had seven-game win streak ended yesterday. Devils had won 16 in row before falling behind 3-0 in this series. Unusual to play consecutive days in playoffs. Devils scored only two goals first two series games on this ice.

Home side is 4-0 in Edmonton-San Jose series, Sharks outshot Oilers 68-41 in first two series games at Shark Tank, holding the Oilers scoreless in both third periods. San Jose had won six in row before pair of losses in Alberta, where they were 0-9 on the power play and got outshot 92-59 in two games. Faceoffs in the two games at Alberta: Edmonton 116, San Jose 68, after it was 60-50 Oilers in two games at San Jose.

        Six-Pack for Sunday
-- Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.
-- Wild day in National League Saturday; four games were decided in last inning, two others decided by a run, Lieber had perfect game in 7th inning. Only Arizona game was dud
-- Padres scored three in ninth on Piazza homer to beat the Cubs 4-3; winning pitcher was Meredith, extra player San Diego got from Boston for trading Mirabelli back to Bosox.
-- Kudos to Cavaliers for beating Detroit with Larry Hughes out of lineup. Cleveland got 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench from Varejao, and held Pistons to 39.4% from floor.
-- Lions' players filed grievance against their new coach for excessive hitting in off-season workouts. Not exactly great start in Motown for Marinelli, who comes with reputation as a taskmaster, which is what the Lions need, obviously.
-- Happy birthday to my godson Tom Buckley, who turns 15 years old Sunday.

Sunday's List of 13: Obscure, random baseball info.........
          13) The amateur baseball draft, which major league baseball stupidly does not televise each year, started in 1965- the first player chosen was Rick Monday by the A's. Monday was a fine outfielder who wound up playing 19 years in big leagues.

          12) A's also drafted Sal Bando and Gene Tenace that year, so they built the framework for their dynasty of early 70's- they wound up trading Monday for pitcher Ken Holtzman, who did great job in helping Oakland win three straight titles.

          11) The next year, A's drafted Reggie Jackson as second pick in draft, after Mets drafted catcher Steve Chilcutt; who got to play only 331 minor league games, and zero big league games.

          10) One season, Mets drafted pair of guys you might have heard of, although not for their baseball exploits; Ken Stabler, a lefty pitcher, and Dan Pastorini, a high school shortstop. Both went on to be accomplished NFL quarterbacks.

          9) Baseball players get to big leagues less quickly than other sports; go back ten years, to '96 draft, and we see that first three picks were: Kris Benson, Travis Lee, Braden Looper, all current major leaguers, although none is as big a star as Eric Chavez, who was the 10th selection that year.

          8) Nolan Ryan was a 10th round pick of the Mets, same year that Tom Seaver, Carlton Fisk weren't among top 150 players selected. An inexact science, indeed.

          7) Only nine catchers ever had their numbers retired; three of the nine wore number 8: Yogi Berra, Gary Carter, Bill Dickey.

          6) Other than Carter, Tony Perez was the only Hall of Famer who ever played for the Montreal Expos.

          5) Dave DeBusschere was better known as power forward on two Knicks' championship teams, but #22 also wore #22 while he briefly pitched for the White Sox in the early 60's.

          4) Note that Jay Delsing was tied for lead in Nationwide Tour golf event this week, less than week after his father passed away. Jim Delsing was outfielder for St Louis Browns- he was the player midget Eddie Gaedel pinch-hit for.

          3) Devil Rays are 4-4 in their last eight games; before that, in their 11-18 start, their bullpen had yielded 167 baserunners in only 96 innings pitched, which is really terrible.

          2) Jason Kendall's last home run was July 27, 2004, over 1,000 plate appearances ago, off of Paul Byrd.

          1) When was last time NL batting race was led this late in the season by pair of catchers (Ausmus, McCann)?
