Halftime score of Game 1: Pistons 69, Cavaliers 48. Cavaliers are totally outclassed right now, and unless they step it up bigtime in Game 2, this series will not merit analysis, other than adding up days of rest Detroit will get before the conference finals. Big stat of Game 1: Detroit was 15-22 beyond the arc.

Stackhouse scored 24 points in 35:02 off bench in close Game 1 loss at Alamo; entire San Antonio bench scored 11 points in its combined 59:15 of action. Dallas has two starters who don't look to score (Diop, Griifin); their job is to wear out Spurs' starters. Mavs were up 52-46 at half, blew chance to win road game that thye'll need to have any shot of winning series. Can starting 5 of the Spurs win tough series without lot of help from bench?

      NHL analysis

Defensively-stout Anaheim hasn't allowed goal in its last eleven periods, holding Avalanche scoreless in first two games, as Avs went 0-11 on power play and managed just 51 shots in two tilts. Scene shifts to Denver, but Avs are just 1-1 at home in playoffs. Remember, three of their four wins vs Dallas were in overtime; in seven playoff games this spring, they have one regulation win. Ducks were 2-2 at Calgary, with both losses by a goal.

        Six-Pack for Tuesday
-- World Series of Poker will have 7,633 entrants this year, and a $10 million first prize. Four years ago, they had 800+ contestants. Nothing like the power of television, and the lure of "easy" money, though nothing is easy about it.
-- Want a good pitcher for your fantasy team? Marshall on the Cubs has allowed two runs in his last 20.2 innings.
-- Memo to Clippers: You can't run up and down like its an old ABA game and expect to beat the Suns. It just won't happen. Clips shot 59%, scored 123 and still lost by seven.
-- Hopefully, we've seen end of hoopers jumping in air to save a ball, then calling a timeout. That is supposed to be done away with at a college rules' meeting later this month.
-- Enrollment at U. of New Orleans has shrunk from 17,000 to 11,000 in wake of Hurricane Katrina.
-- During the Giants' three-game series at Philly, Giants' SS Vizquel did not have a ground ball or popup hit to him in any of the three games.

Tuesday's List of 13: Offseason look at Carolina Panthers
          13) Carolina started season 1-2, then ripped off six strait wins, scoring 30+ points in four of six games. They added depth at RB when they drafted De Angelo Williams of Memphis, who might be a sleeper as a third down back as a rookie.

          12) Through seven games, Panthers had turnover ratio of +1; in four of last nine games, they had +4 turnover games, as the defense began giving offense ball in great position.

          11) For season, Carolina started 50% more drives (24-16) on plus side of field than their opponents did.

          10) Panthers were second in league in yards allowed on first drive of a half (22.3); they allowed only six points all season on first drive of the second half.

          9) Fox is excellent coach; Carolina outscored opponents 41-16 on first drive of game; their 41pts scored was fourth in NFL.

          8) Panthers were second in NFL in red zone defense, trailing only the Bears (3.95/3.66).

          7) Thanks to gutty QB Delhomme and game-breaking Smith at WR, Carolina's offense could carry the day when necessary; they scored 1.71 points per drive that started 80+ yards from goal line, sixth-best in league.

          6) Panthers were second in NFL in takeaways (42), 3rd in TO margin (+16), 5th in incomplete pass margin (+43).

          5) Carolina's opponents scored 23 TDs on 176 drives, giving them second-best TD% against in NFL (13.1%).

          4) This season, Panthers don't play road game between 22nd of October and Nov. 26, but they play four of last six games on foreign soil, finishing up at division rivals Falcons, Saints.

          3) Fox's club dominated Atlanta last year, outscoring them by 68-17 in two late-season wins; they outrushed Falcons in two games, 371-146, outsacked them 10-1, and outscored them in first half, 41-9. Atlanta went in tank in season finale at Dome, as Carolina cruised to win, which means..............

          2) The 2006 season opener takes on little extra siginificance, as Falcons visit Carolina. Another Panther win, and Atlanta has to be thinking Fox has their number.

          1) Pair of Monday night games for Carolina; they host Tampa Bay after their bye November 13, then visit Philly later Dec 4. Carolina has all the makings of a contender; solid QB, smart, ego-free coach and a defense that makes things happen. We like the Panthers to be contending for NFC Championship.
