Baseball Play of the Day (17-17, +1.63*)

    Colorado Rockies +140 (Francis/Marquis)
Getting 140 here is a gift, considering the Rockies have the starting pitching edge in this one.
Francis is one of my favorite unheralded pitchers - his ERA is a very solid 3.60 in 6 starts, 4 of which came at Coors Field. His last outing was a shutout victory over the hot Reds offense, and his lone game against St. Louis was a 7-0 victory at the old Busch Stadium.
Jason Marquis, on the other hand, carries a 5.50 ERA into this one, and he has not looked good recently. After getting off to a good start, the Cardinals have lost his last three outings (including a 7-3 loss to the Cubs and an 8-3 loss to the Nationals - both those teams have been awful offensively) His sinker has been staying up, and has been hit hard.
Also, I believe the Cardinals lineup is a bit overrated - the Rockies average more rpg, and they are the more complete lineup.
The Rockies have been money on the road (10-5) and this line is simply too high.

    A couple opinions:
    • Wayne, CEC, and a couple others like playing 2-team ML parlays. Well, here's one I like - Texas and Toronto, should pay around +170. I almost think it is worth laying the -140 with Texas. Koronka has been fabulous (3.55 ERA against pretty decent opposition), and the Twins are terrible against LHP. The Rangers will put up some runs against a struggling Brad Radke (ERA is 7.29). Weaver hasn't been very good for Anaheim (his ERA is 6.43) and Toronto will score enough runs for Halladay.
    • There is value in the Royals +185 tomorrow. Bautista has actually fared pretty well against the Indians in the past, and Byrd is garbage. He was shelled in his last outing against KC, an eventual 11-5 loss.
    • I like this total a bit - TB/Seattle Under 9 (-120). Both starting pitchers have been decent, but not great - but that was against much tougher opposition than they will face Monday night. Tampa is only averaging 4.0 rpg against RHSP, and Seattle can't hit lefties at all. They were shutout by Sabathia today, and are averaging only slightly more than 3 rpg against LHSPs this year.

If you believe in using the oddsmaker to shape the way you bet - I do to an extent - then here is a play for you. I put 1/2 unit on it.

    New Jersey Devils -104
The Devils were thoroughly dominated in Game 1, losing 6-0 in what was Brodeur's worst playoff performance in 12 years. The line is virtually the same in this game, and the Devils are still only +105 to win the series.
Not only do I have a feeling Brodeur bounces back strong here, I also think the oddsmakers are telling us the Devils are the play - it looks too easy to take the home team that just won 6-0.

    Let's go Buffalo!
