downThis thread reminds me of a conversation I had last year while I was in Colombia on my romance tour in August.
Anyways, one of the guys on the tour was from New York and was/is a real diehard Yankee fan (he is probably in his late thirties.
Anyways, we got to talking, and he told me that one of the Yankee problems was Torre, and he gave me a whole slew of reasons why(which I didn't agree with).
I couldn't believe he didn't think Torre was a good manager, and I defended him, saying that as big Sox fan, I thought he was one of the best, and that I would "trade" Francona for him any time.
I guess it comes to the old saying "the grass is always greener."

yeah i work with a guy that is a huge Boston fan and he was defending him the other day in a Convo that we were all having during lunch the other day.. Seems strange when the biggest rival is defending your teams skipper lol

T, they spent cheese but their total payroll is the same as last year. And with Glavine, Matsui, Trachsel and Floyd coming off this year, that is another $28 million to spend just to get to this years number. Plug Milledge in for Floyd and perhaps Hernandez in for Matsui, and you are paying major league minimums, leaving big bucks for pitching, as they need it. Fact is, Yankee payroll is $85 million more than the Mets. Like I said, I wish my team would spend it like the Yanks. Would be nice to see a Subway Series again...hope my team is a bit more competitive than the last one.

I actually believe Torre is one of the best Managers in the game...but I also believe TMac could have managed these Yankee teams to at least 85-90 wins. I truly believe that Brian Cashman is the most overrated GM in baseball. He spends and spends and spends...rebuilding the middle relief is an annual rite of winter, he spent millions on latin american undraftee players that never panned out and his best moves (Sheffield, A-Rod, RJ) were no brainers where he out spent everyone. Stick Michael built the Championship teams of the late 90's, not Cashman. How this guy does not get taken over the coals amazes me.

I still think no matter what anyone says, Cashman is hindered to a certain extent by Steinbrenner;if Georgie wants someone, I din't think he gives two hoots about what Cashman or anyone else thinks of the player;he(Cashman) is instructed to sign him.

I agree but only with big ticket free agents/players. I don't think Georgie meddles with long relievers, bench players, role players. He leaves those to 'his baseball people'... But I think he tells Cashman to go get RJ or go get A-Rod or go spend the money on Giambi.

You are correct, he had a losing record prior to being the Yankees skipper. But it takes a special talent to manage that team, with Steinbrenner over your shoulder and the media just waiting to pounce on you. How many managers' have lasted 5 yrs under Steinbrenner, much less 10? IMO he has done as good a job as you can do with that team over the last 10 yrs. Agreed, they have spent a ton, but many of his teams have been flawed nevertheless.

A special talent. You must be smoking some of Waynes kind bud again. No way torre has a special talent. As far as lasting under steinbrenner, thats an easy answer. Torre is/has unlimited talent to work with because in the 90's steinbrenner implimented the "win at all costs" mentality. other managers didnt even get that opportunity under steinbrenner. Bottomline is torre is a average manager @ best. Nothing more, nothing less.

Drop the HaterAide and wake the hell up.. Torre is a great manager and the 1,000 wins proves it.. Nobody is twisting the other teams owners arms making them to not go out and spend the cash.. Its not Yankees fan faults that your team as well as every other team in MLB wont do it.. Oh BTW if memory serves me correctly it is the BOSTON RED SOX who has the 2nd highest payroll in MLB but i dont hear you talking about that now do we??

Second highest payroll but $70 million behind the Yankees. IMO, Torre is one of the best Managers today, but far from one of the great managers of all time.
