Bulls hit 13-26 treys in Game 1, but trailed 63-51 at half; they did hold Miami to 48 second half points, but Heat was 32-39 at the foul line (Bulls were 13-17). As hard as Chicago worked to make the playoffs, staying in them longer than four games is going to take some doing.

Carmelo Anthony was just 9-26 from floor Saturday, as Denver lost 89-87, despite turning ball over just seven times- they shot 38.5% as team. Clippers were 23-30 from line and survived Game One jitters- after opening up 54-45 halftime lead, they held on for dear life down the stretch. This could be a long series.

              Monday's NHL playoff games

Sabres outshot Philly 58-32 in double overtime Game 1 win, and finally won 3-2; they were 0-9 on power play, hard to win these playoffs games with lousy power play. Buffalo won faceoffs by 49-37 margin. Flyers were just 1-5 on power play; they lost first game after scoring tying goal in third period.

Rangers sliding badly, Devils still on roll after 6-1 win in Game 1, where New Jersey was 5-13 on power play, after Rangers got hit for 16 penalties for 43 minutes (Devils got 9-21). Shots on goal were 30-30, Rangers won faceoffs 29-23, but you can't win when you have to kill off 13 penalties.

Are Canadiens ever really an underdog? They routed 'canes in Game 1, 6-1, despite being outshot 43-21. Habs had only three power plays, but scored two goals. Carolina was 0-5 when they had man advantage. Sunday, all four Game 1 losers evened their series; we'll see if same thing happens tonight.

Colorado scored three second period goals, outshot Dallas by a 31-18 margin, killed off all five shorthanded situations and got a Game 1 win on road. Dallas scored twice in first period, but did not score again. Colorado has lost last five games that followed a win, so we'll see if they can go for jugular in Game 2.

Monday's List of 13: Golf, sun and freedom of speech.......
                13) Mets' announcer Keith Hernandez opened Pandora's Box when he criticized Padres for having female massage therapist in the dugout Saturday night. Padre manager Bochy came to defense of the therapist, and hopefully, this will all go away.

                12) The bigger question is this: Even if Hernandez is 100% in the wrong, and I am not passing judgment either way, isn't it his job to give his opinions, even if they are antiquated and offensive? We criticize guys for being bland on the air, then we crucify them when they give controversial opinions. Ugh.

                11) This country was/is based on freedom of speech, people. Soldiers are risking their lives to protect that for us.

Welcome friends; since I am in Jim Nantz country, just had to start that way today. On to my day at Shell Houston Open, and a day of golf/sun.
                10) Security at this event was tougher than at the airport; you cannot bring cellphones on the course; I got patted down not once, but twice, after checking my cellphone in a tent.

                9) I was standing so close to 15th green today, could hear a whole conversation between Jesper Parnevik and his caddy, as they lined up a long birdie putt. I was eight feet from them, at most. Parnevik, by the way, was wearing dark purple tie with his Ashworth golf shirt.

                8) Parnevik and Charles Howell III each look like they could use an extra meal now and then. They're both incredibly thin.

                7) John Daly was the #1 attraction here, by far, but he wasn't having a good day; on 15, he almost chipped in for birdie and when there was no caddy in sight to tend the flag for a tap-in par, he took the flag out with his right hand, tossed it behind him, then tapped in with his wedge. Left-handed. Bad day.

                6) Last six times Stuart Appleby played in Houston; he had a 2nd-place finish and two wins, all on three different courses. On his other three visits, he missed the cut.

                5) Golfers rarely look like they're having fun on the course. I know they're working/concentrating/competing, but would a smile now and then be that bad?

                4) TV announcers would make these tournaments little more relevant if they stressed how much a guy like Steve Stricker needed his third-place finish this week. I know winning is the big thing, but for Stricker, this week may have gotten him his card for the rest of 2006 and all of 2007, so its huge for him, and telling that story would make telecasts more interesting.

                3) Another thing about pro golf that never gets reported, and can only be seen in person; there are unusually high number of attractive females on the course, and on 85-90 degree day, thats a good thing.

                2) It didn't seem that hot on the course, but after 90 minutes out there, my clothes were soaked through. Never has a cold lemonade tasted so good.

                1) You don't drive to this tournament; you take a shuttle bus from a **** parking lot. Well-organized; anyway, I am sitting behind two guys who spend entire 15-minute drive talking on Texas high school football. About how one team had a 20-7 lead over Garland High in the playoffs, then lost 21-20, in front of sellout crowd of 12,000 fans. Only in Texas.

-- Brewers lost six of their last eight games, as pitching has become a problem; they walked thirteen batters Sunday.
-- A West Virginia grad student was caught spying at a Marshall football practice. My question is this: There are folks who think WVa might win national title-- why do they need to spy on the Thundering Herd?
-- Memphis Grizzlies are now 0-9 in playoff games; they'll win one or two before this series is over, but shooting 61% in first half and being down nine isn't good.
-- A softball pitcher at Northwestern struck out 28 batters in a 4-3, 18-inning win over Minnesota.
-- Miguel Tejada was 4-4 in the Bronx Sunday; problem is, none of his teammates got any hits in 7-1 loss.
-- Detroit Tigers are now 10-2 on the road this season, and Jim Leyland is looking like Manager of Month for April.
