Pacers have had rough year and half since incident at Auburn Hills crippled their franchise, but they're back in playoffs, and face New Jersey team they beat two of three, splitting pair at the Swamp and winning 102-90 at home, but that said, Pacers were awful down stretch, while Nets won fourteen in row at one point in March and April.

Phoenix had beaten Lakers three in row before LA routed Suns 109-89 in last meeting; Lakers lost visits to Valley of Sun 106-93 and 107-96, lost home game 122-112. Suns didn't play well after Amare Stoudemire came back, then left again after three games with more knee issues, but their balance should be enough to extinguish the Lakers' one-man band.

Detroit also won its first three games vs Milwaukee (85-76, then a 106-102 OT win, then 112-105) before Bucks won last meeting, 113-93 in meaningless game for Detroit. Check out Spurs' 33-pt win over Kings as evidence of how veteran champions turn on the power when the playoff lights go up.

Dallas won last three games vs Memphis (90-83/81-80 on road at Memphis, then 97-87 at home) after dropping 112-92 home game in first meeting. Grizzlies are #5 seed, but blew chance for home court edge had they stayed behind Clippers in standings. Griz was playing great ball when regular season ended.

                  Sunday's NHL playoff games

Tampa Bay led 1-0 after two periods Friday, before Senators got four in third period; they beat Lightning in faceoffs, 41-25, and killed off eight of their nine penalties, while scoring pair of goals in six power play chances. Shots on goal were 38-36, Ottawa.

Edmonton led 2-1 after two periods due to heroics of Roloson, but Red Wings tied it in third and won in second OT, 3-2; shots on goal were ridiculous 57-25 in favor of Detroit- they also won 43 of 76 faceoffs. Both Oiler goals scored on power play (2-6).

Calgary has played low-scoring games all year; they led 1-0 in third period, saw Anaheim tie game, but then Calgary scored on short from right side in second OT. Both sides were 0-5 on the power play. Anaheim had 41-37 edge in faceoffs, and outshot the Flames, 34-30, but they came up short.

Nashville was only team to jump out to lead Friday- they scored three in first period, then held on for 4-3 lead vs plucky San Jose squad that outshot Predators 34-30, but allowed four goals on seven Nashville power plays. Predators held 38-27 faceoff edge.

Sunday's List of 13: Notes from Kingwood Classic, Day 2
                    13) Let's do some quick math; there are 336 teams in Division I basketball; take away Ivy/Patriot League teams, although in Patriot, some teams give scholarships, but for sake of debate here, we'll say 320 schools are allowed to give out thirteen basketball scholarships each, for a grand total of 4,160 kids on scholarship in any given season.

                    12) Divide that by four (fr-soph-jr-sr) and 1,040 kids get hoop scholarships each year (approximately). This week, there are 252 teams signed up in the 17-and-under division here for the Kingwood Classic. Average of ten kids per team, thats 2,520 kids, just in this tournament, this weekend. Go all over this country and add in kids playing in other events, or kids that don't even play organized spring ball -ain't easy to get free ride to college these days.

                    11) With that in mind, the great majority of kids haven't clue as to what might impress a coach to give a kid a scholarship to his school. We watched Friday night as kid on San Diego Magic tried a dunk with this team up 8 in final 3:00; he missed other side came down and scored, and suddenly an easy win was once again dicey. That turns off a coach. A lot. Even if he had made the dunk, it wasn't impressing anyone.

                    10) Just seems like kids could use a course on what sells and what doesn't, as far as game management goes.

                    11) Lute Olson, Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Calhoun; they were all here in Houston Saturday, watching Kingwood Classic games, doing their recruiting, the largely unseen side of college coaching. Without good players, no one wins.

                    10) Little strange seeing Coach K in this small, 9th grade gym with three rows of bleachers on one side, standing in a corner talking to Tommy Amaker. Kid from one of the Dallas teams is the big recruit. I imagine they pretty much get who they want.

                    9) Last month, Northwestern State pulled the biggest upset of the NCAA tournament when they beat Iowa; Saturday, it was business as usual, as the Hawkeye assistant sat next to Bo Ryan and Jim Les, watching the Illinois Wolves game, in a jam-packed gym at Bammel Middle School, while in next gym, a lonely Northwestern State assistant sat by himself, one of only five spectators, and two coaches, as Louisiana Dream Team faced off against a team from Indianapolis.

                    8) Officiating here is very shaky; one building had all female refs working; when they worked in crews of three, they were fine, but in games with crew of two, chaos ensued every time. Let's just put it this way, and I am not referring to the women when I say this: the percentage of officials working this week who are in real good physical condition is not high.

                    7) To put two women on a game between two city teams isn't very smart; no one here calls many fouls, and in a physcial game, if something was to break out, these women, unless they know martial arts or something, aren't breaking up any incidents. Luckily, nothing happened.

                    6) If this event teaches a kid one thing, please learn this- you better learn how to play through contact. They don't call lot of fouls; heck, some collisions get ignored.

                    5) Speaking for all the games I've seen this weekend, I would trust more of these kids shooting a game-winning trey than a game-winning foul shot, or making a game-winner in traffic around the hoop. Practicing 3's is where its at.

                    4) In general, I would say more good athletes than good hoop players, and coaches I listened to were more adamant than I am being. No one was real impressed with quality of play- for while, I thought it was because it is only April, spring teams haven't had lot of time to mesh, but coaches were not happy with level of play. We'll see what it looks like in July.

                    3) Most fun game of day: Memphis Tigers' win over Compton William Green of Memphis drove baseline and had dunk just like the one Dr J had in '80 Finals vs Lakers. It was amazing, and I very rarely gush over a dunk.

                    2) Compton was very young team, with Justin Hawkins a star in the making; the 9th grader from Taft HS has ton of tools to work with, and a good court demeanor. He can shoot the ball.

                    1) People here have been very nice, helpful in any way they can be. This event is just so huge, covering all of Houston in all the age groups. Very cumbersome to try and figure out the pairings, once the playoffs start, then get to whatever game it is you want to see. It'll get easier in future years, as I become more familiar with the area
