Played Texas on the following Dates:
3-11 Won 2-1 in 10 innings
HOUSTON — Chris Kolkhorst doubled in Jeff Blackinton with the winning run in the 10th inning, giving top-ranked Rice a come-from-behind 2-1 win over number-14 Texas Tuesday night at Reckling Park.
Kolkhorst pulled the first pitch he saw from reliever Jesen Merle (0-1), the sixth Texas pitcher, down the right-field line to plate Blackinton with the winner. Blackinton had singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on Jeff Jorgensen's sacrifice bunt.
David Aardsma (3-0) picked up the win with two solid innings of relief. Wade Townsend, Rice's starting pitcher, went eight innings, allowing four hits and striking out a career-high 12.
Texas (15-7) grabbed a 1-0 lead off Townsend in the fifth inning. Townsend had retired the first 12 Longhorn batters, but Scott Dodge started the fifth with a single to right. A wild pitch, a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, but Texas' only run scored on Taylor Teagarden's sacrifice fly to right.
Texas threatened again in the top of the eighth when Teagarden doubled, Joe Ferin singled to left, and the runners moved up on a ground out, but Townsend struck out the final two batters he would face to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Rice (16-1) got its first run on Enrique Cruz' line-drive home run to right off Huston Street.
The win was Rice's 13th consecutive victory overall and the Owls' 12th straight at home. It also broke a three-game losing streak to the defending national champions. A crowd of 4,525, the fifth-largest in Reckling Park history, watched the game.
Rice will now take its 10-game winning streak in Western Athletic Conference games to Hawaii for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
