Friday's Lists of 13: Pros, cons of year-round basketball
    13) I think kids playing ball almost year-round is a good thing, but there are different ways to go about playing year-round, and there are valid arguments for all options.

Without taking sides, I present arguments for both pro and con in this most interesting debate.

    13) Pro: Kids play more basketball.
Con: Kids play more games, especially in spring/summer ball, but practice skills less. Oftentimes, workouts are constructive to developing skills, moreso than playing games.

    12) Pro: Many AAU and high school programs are very well-run and teach kids valuable lessons.
Con: Many AAU and high school programs are poorly run and teach kids nothing, other than enabling bad habits.

    11) Pro: Kids get seen by more college coaches in spring/ summer, since college coaches are out of season and can get around more, which enhances kids' chances of getting a scholarship.
Con: Lot of kids who play AAU have no shot at college basketball scholarship, and are chasing tail of something they have no chance of ever catching, wasting their parents' cash.

    10) Pro: Kids on top-level teams get to travel around country and see new places.
Con: Kids who need to study more are instead spending weekends in hotels and in gyms, playing ball.

    9) Pro: Kids learn how to deal with referees in more-physical world of AAU ball.
Con: Kids don't play enough pickup, where they call fouls themselves, and learn how to settle disputes amongst each other.

    8) Pro: AAU ball provides some kids with much-needed gear that high school programs can't afford.
Con: Kids on such teams often get spoiled and expect to be given things, and high school teams can't do it.

    7) Pro: The rise of AAU has hurt summer camps that do nothing for kids except relieve them of their money and put on expensive glorified pickup games they could get at home for free.
Con: The rise of AAU has hurt the summer camps that emphasize instruction and team play.

    6) Pro: Running time games and 2-minute halftimes allow more games to get fit into each day.
Con: Very little time for instruction, during games. How does a kid learn if there is so little time to teach?

    5) Pro: Playing year-round encourages good physical conditioning.
Con: Playing three games or more in one day can be hazardous to your health.

    4) Pro: Kids gets enhanced self-image from being recruited for teams.
Con: Lack of rules, regulations creates a culture of competition for top talent that can go over the top.

    3) Pro: High school coaches can coach their kids year-round, just about.
Con: Kids get tired of hearing the same voice, year-round.

    2) Pro: Anyone, not just someone with teaching degree, can be an AAU coach. Kids get to hear different voices.
Con: Anyone can be an AAU coach. Hell, I was one.

    1) Pro: Specialization encourages excellence in a chosen pursuit.
    Con: Specialization creates tunnel-visioned robots.

You hear good arguments on both sides of this debate; I think, for most part, playing year-round is good for a kid, as long as he is passionate about ball and doesn't neglect his schoolwork.
