Wednesday's List of 13: U want to coach Little League????
If you're ever tempted to coach Little League, it is my job to discourage you. There are positives to coaching little kids, but other than fresh air, seeing kids improve and attractive moms on an 80-degree day, I can't think of any.

I spent nine years as Little League coach (four as head coach, five as an assistant) in two different leagues. The following anecdotes all happened. Names have been withheld for various reasons…

                13) Was involved with a 10-year old All-Star team once; 21 kids were chosen to try out. One woman complained that her son wasn't invited, so a meeting was held, and they decided to field two 13-player teams, so what started as 21 players wound up at 26, well, 25; woman who originally complained wound up sending her kid to tennis camp, so he never played for either team.

                12) Speaking of camps, mom of one of my kids on my regular season team called to tell me her son wouldn't be playing in best-of-3 league finals. "He is going to Math camp", she told me. I asked her to repeat it twice, thinking I hadn't heard right, but sure enough, the kid went to a summer camp devoted to Math. Square roots around the campfire; can't beat it.

                11) One of my kids missed third base scoring on long hit; the other team appealed the play, but did it wrong, so the umpire, not his coach, explained to the pitcher the right way to do it, they appealed again, and the kid was called out. I went out to dispute the way the ump intruded into coaching, saying it was against the rules, and he told me, "Well, I'm changing the rules."

                10) A mother complained that her son wasn't playing enough; I told her we would work with him in practice and see what happens. Three days later, same woman complained that the practices were too long (they were 90 minutes).

                9) My team was in pre-season scrimmage, so no umps; the parents would ump from behind the mound. My pitcher's dad was umping, but the kid was struggling badly, so I visited the mound. The kid, who usually had terrific control, looked at me and said from behind clenched teeth, "Get him out of here"

I actually had to ask the kid's father to leave the mound, and as soon as he did, the kid returned to his successful ways.

                8) Had player on my team openly cheering for the other team once; asked him why, and he told me the other pitcher was a friend of his.

                7) One year, our team wasn't so good, but we pulled an upset in semifinals and played the best team in a 1-game final. We were out of pitchers, so it got ugly quick. In third inning, our team down seven or eight runs, and with only nine guys there, my first baseman's mother pulls the kid from the game, and takes him on vacation (they had camp 40 minutes away).

I volunteered to drive the kid to their camp, no go. We played rest of game with two outfielders, no cleanup hitter, lost 19-4.

                6) At an All-Star selection meeting (they were the best for the good stories), when it was apparent that 80% of coaches' kids weren't the best players in the league, one coach stood up and said, "Hey, we do all the work. Why should our kids get cut?" This was after another guy had said, "My kid isn't good enough. Cut him."

                5) My catcher beat up our starting pitcher once. During the game. In the dugout. The pitcher deserved it.

                4) Had a kid miss practice once, and the other eleven players on the team begged me to bench him the next game, because they all hated him. Of course, I had no idea they hated him, because I am clueless, but it is funny what you learn when you talk to people. This kid was one of our better players.

                3) Was coaching in All-Star tournament, and was changing pitchers after kid hit a double against us; while we were changing pitchers, the runner on second went back to first, because the umpire told him he missed first base. When I complained, the guy told me I was right, and put the kid back on second, denying the appeal that he missed first, after he had told the kid he missed it.

                2) Had a 30-minute argument with a parent who outweighed me by 50+ pounds; he wasn't happy, because his kid had been demoted to part-time player, after making seven errors in two games. "It is your job to motivate him" angry parent said. Annoyed coach said, "This isn't a job. You get paid for jobs." I quit coaching Little League after that season.

                1) My first round draft pick one year had an older sister who had attended Stanford. The mother tells me the daughter was dating guy who played football there; he had been a starting linebacker, but they hired a new coach, and the guy demoted him. "If it wasn't for that stupid coach, David would be in the NFL" the woman defiantly told me. So I had drafted the son of a woman who thought Bill Walsh was a lousy judge of
