Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a spring day......
13) What would happen if NC State went after Robert M. Knight to be its basketball coach? Wouldn't he at least have to consider coaching in the ACC, down road from Coach K?
12) Cody Ross of the Dodgers became just the second player in big league history to have both his first two major league home runs be grand slams. Greg Counsell is the other player.
11) Tampa Bay tried to make Dan Miceli its closer, a move so ill-conceived that it may already have been scrapped, in favor of "whoever is pitching well stays in" model, much preferred in this corner. Miceli had 21 saves for '95 Pirates, but has just 37 for his whole career; he is now on his 11th big league team.
10) There is a high school in Las Vegas fittingly named, Bonanza High School. Wonder if they have a tape of Lorne Greene singing their alma mater.
9) There are 26 Australians on the PGA Tour this season.
8) If you root for the Orlando Magic, beware; their hot finish to season reminds us of last year's Golden State Warriors
(18-10 in last 28 games, then a disaster this year).
7) Not to say the Eastern Conference of the NBA is weak, but unless the Wizards win their last two games, only four of the eight eastern playoffs teams will have winning records.
6) Boston College's hoop program took major hit when Al Skinner lost two assistants to head coaching jobs; their second year in ACC won't run as smoothly as first one did.
5) 27.4% of all major leaguers were born outside of America, including 15 Mets. 85 guys are from Dominican Republic, 43 from Venezuela, 33 from Puerto Rico, 17 from Asia, 14 from Mexico.
4) Dick Williams should be in the Hall of Fame as a manager, and before Joe Torre.
3) Cleveland Browns signed free agent punter Dave Zastudil away from the Ravens and gave him $1.6M a year. Not too much optimism for your offense, if you give your punter that much money.
2) Rams will use no-huddle offense some, and will let their QB audible, something that wasn't allowed in Martz Madness. I feel good about the Rams in '06, as long as they don't draft Jay Cutler. Linehan should be fine with Jeff Smoker as his 3rd QB; Rams need defensive help and OL help, and should draft that way.
1) Meanwhile, April is half over, and NC State still doesn't have a hoop coach. April and July are the two key recruiting months. The Wolfpack program gets worse with every day that passes without a head coach in place. They're going to wind up hiring a no-name guy, who may be a fine coach, but best-case scenario is that they hire another Herb Sendek, who was disliked by Wolfpack Nation, and that won't be very easy, since Sendek is a superb tactician.
