Sunday's List of 13: Atlanta Falcons' review/preview
13) Falcons were 6-2 at midway point of season, losing by FG to both Seattle and New England, and were headed for first back-to-back winning seasons in 40-year history of franchise, but they lost six of last eight games, and last three in row, and not only missed playoffs, but finished 8-8. Atlanta has some questions to answer about itself in 2006, especially after their 44-11 tank job at home to division rival Carolina in season finale.
12) To me, most troubling thing about the Falcons was their Week 15 OT loss in Tampa; game was deep in overtime, and looked like it could end in a tie; TV cameras cut to Jim Mora, who is talking on a cellphone. Is he ordering pizza? Saying hi to his parents? Getting his bets in on the Sunday night game? No, he was trying to find out what a tie did to their playoff chances. 4:30 Sunday was not the time to be researching such information.
11) Great coaches are obsessive about details; Mora should have delegated all research on this topic to PR department during the week, and it would have been at his fingertips when/if he needed it. Atlanta chose to punt on 4th-and-2 with 1:08 left in OT, when a tie was not good for them, in fact, it wasn't much different than a loss, which is what they wound up with when the punt was returned into Falcon territory.
10) '05 Falcons tied for 7th in red zone offense (5.07); with mobile Vick at QB, they have a unique talent whose passing could be more accurate. Atlanta was 3rd in league in 3rd down percentage, 7th in NFL in average yards on opening drives of a game and, thanks largely to Vick, their third running back, Falcons ran ball for 159 yards per game.
Teams are working to keep Vick in the pocket and make him pass more. Falcons scored only 16 pgg in the last five games, after scoring 24.6 in first eleven. Mora and OC Knapp have to come up with ways to make Vick more productive, while keeping him healthy.
9) Atlanta needs to draft better; in four years since they acquired Vick, only once have received a draft guide higher than C+. At the end of the day, talent still wins out.
8) Backup QB Schaub is seen as a bright prospect around the league; with Vick prone to injury, do the Falcons keep him, or trade Schaub for a decent draft choice? This is a key question, with the draft rapidly approaching.
7) Atlanta's defense allowed 45 TD's last year (TD% of 25.3%, 28th in league) while forcing only 29 field goal attempts; their red zone defense was 19th in NFL. They need to improve that aspect of their defense, as well as………
6)…….their run defense, which allowed 163,172 and 211 yards in first three road games last year, and two of those were Buffalo and the Saints; Falcons were 4-0 when they allowed less than 100 rushing yards; in the fatal 1-4 stretch that ended a disappointing season, Falcons allowed 142,125,128,174 and 229 yards on the ground. Not good.
5) Atlanta's D did best job of stopping foes on third down (30.2%); now they have to do better on first and second down.
4) Looking at their last four losses, Falcons scored four TDs on 48 drives, averaged less than five yards per pass attempt, and were outscored 50-18 in second half.
3) Players have to know that coaches have their backs, that the little details will be cleaned up, giving the players their best chance to win. The '05 Falcons didn't do this, or else they would have gone for it on 4th down in the OT at Tampa; if the '06 Falcons don't do it, Coach Mora will find himself on a very hot seat on Peachtree Street.
2) Owner Arthur Blank has done a terrific job getting the public behind Falcon football; the Georgia Dome presents a strong home field edge, and in Vick, they have one of the NFL's most marketable stars. This is a team that should contend for foreseeable future, but last year's collapse was a red flag.
1) Atlanta opens the season by playing each of its division foes, starting in Charlotte; they were outscored 68-17 in two games against the Panthers last year, with Carolina starting six of 22 drives in Falcon territory. Unless they do better job vs John Fox's team, 2006 won't be much more productive than '05 was.
John ... Not too sure if you were going to be here today ... Happy Easter Guys and thanks ....
