Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..................
        13) Julio Franco is still in the major leagues, 25 years after he made his major league debut with the Phillies. He was traded to Cleveland after the '82, as part of multi-player package for Von Hayes. Hayes retired fourteen years ago.

        12) Franco has been teammates with Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt Mike Hargrove, Steve Carlton, Tug McGraw, Bert Blyleven and Sparky Lyle.

        11) The first two nights ESPN aired its Barry Bonds show, the Giants were rained out. In California. Coincidence? I don't think so. Can ESPN control the weather?

        10) Why college hoop coaches switch jobs: Fran Dunphy left Penn for Temple; both schools are in Philly, so he didn't have to move, and his salary went from $345G to $625G. At Temple, if he makes the NCAA tournament, he'll have chance to win some games, something that has passed Ivy League teams by

        9) Penn is now vulnerable in the Ivy; if anyone is going to put a dent in their stranglehold on the league title, the next three years is the time.

        8) You know how on poker telecasts they put the odds for winning each hand on the screen? What if they did this in baseball-say the Royals have a 7-4 lead in 8th inning at the Bronx- what are their odds? 33%? 25%? Lower?

        7) Pepsi now runs a commercial with three pro poker players: Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth. Since when do pro gamblers gets better endorsement deals than baseball players?

        6) Any underclassman who declares for NBA Draft should do so without signing an agent-salaries are slotted, so the agent can't get the kid any more money, all he does it front the kid money (really loaning the kid his own money). Players should keep their options open, so they can go back to school, if their draft position slides. The less scumweasels we see in sports, the better things will be.

        5) You have to wonder if Tropicana Field was built on an ancient cemetery or something, as the Devil Rays appear to be cursed. Opening Day, SS/leadoff hitter Lugo goes 2-2, scores a run, then pulls an ab muscle and goes on DL.

Then Hendrickson shuts the Orioles out, a complete game gem, and he goes on the DL before his next start. Baldelli still hasn't played since 2004. Aubrey Huff is out 4-6 weeks. Jorge Cantu has been out all week. If I were the trainer of this team, I'd be looking over my shoulder for the Grim Reaper.

        4) Bronson Arroyo went yard in his first two starts for the Reds, putting him on pace to break the all-time single season home run record for a pitcher (7, by Earl Wilson and Mike Hampton, and yes, we're purposely ignoring Babe Ruth).

        3) Bud Selig was at the Cardinal home opener Monday, and went on air with Joe Buck and Al Hrabosky-he kept babbling about how baseball is more popular than ever, and how they set attendance records last year. But just because they set attendance records doesn't mean the game is more popular than ever.

        2) Corporations buy lot of season tickets, and use them to entertain clients-I listen to people at work, and there aren't many baseball conversations, not like years ago. Golf, car racing, even poker have put a dent into baseball's popularity, and the nitwits who run the sport (and the Players' Union) have to share in the blame for that.

        1) Take a look at the Sporting News; in the 60's, all it covered in the spring/summer was baseball. Nothing else. Now, to keep afloat, they cover all the sports, and they do it well. But don't tell me baseball is more popular now than it was in 50's, 60's and 70's, because that just isn't true, I don't care how many people go to the games.
