              Thursday's List of 13: Arizona Cardinals' review/preview
With sixteen weeks until training camp starts, we're going to take two days each week and look over all 32 NFL teams, to review their '05 season and preview their '06 edition. We'll go alphabetically, which means we start in the desert with the Arizona Cardinals. Up Sunday are the Atlanta Falcons.

              13) Cardinals get a state-of-the-art domed stadium this year, and with it they get to open the season at home, as well as their first Monday night home game of the Dennis Green era. Will the dome and addition of RB James give the Redbirds a home field edge?

              12) Arizona has a two-time MVP at QB, an All-Pro running back and a terrific sets of receivers, so they figure to improve on their TD% of 12.4% (29th) from last year.

              11) Addition of James should give Cards diversity on offense that makes them better in red zone; they were 31st last year inside opponents' 20-yard line, scoring 3.69 ppp. Only Cleveland (3.43) fared worse.

              10) Warner has to work on protecting the ball better; Arizona turned ball over 37 times last year, and had turnover margin of -11, both tied for 29th in 32-team league. He isn't playing for Mike Martz anymore; turnovers matter, and Arizona must cut theirs down. Redbirds started 13 less drives in enemy territory than their opponents.

              9) They also need to complete more passes; Arizona had 74 more incomplete passes than their opponents last year, 2nd-worst ratio in NFL (Eagles, -78).

              8) Cardinal defense has to do its part; their opponents started 55 drives 80+ yards from goal line, and scored 2.05 ypd, most pts allowed in league.

              7) Arizona's red zone defense was 25th in NFL (4.88 ypd); they took ball away 26 times (T20). Both figures have to get better.

              6) Cardinals were 0-4 last year in games decided by less than six points, with three of the four losses at home. If their crowd support is better in the dome (at least the fans don't have to worry about sunstroke anymore), they can improve on last year's 2-5 home mark (they sold home game to Mexico City).

              5) Franchises that are used to losing need a fast start to jolt them into a new reality; Cards started 1-4 before their bye last year, with only win vs dreadful 49ers. This year, Arizona starts with all three division foes, two of them at home. The opener vs San Francisco almost becomes a ridiculously early must-win contest.

              4) Green has to find a way to do better vs Seattle; last year, Arizona was 3-1 vs Rams and 49ers, and he had ball on St Louis' 9-yard line down 17-12 as only loss ended, but Seahawks killed them (37-12/33-19); they outgained Cards 813-644, outsacked them 7-1, were +6 in turnovers (0-6) and held Redbirds to one offensive TD on 21 drives. Arizona won't win NFC West unless those numbers change.

              3) They have to have faster starts to games, too; last year, Arizona was outscored 52-5 on first drive of a game (Cards had four FGs, but gave up defensive TD), the worst mark in NFL. Seeing as Seattle was +27, Rams +9 and 49ers only -10, an improvement in this mark could add a win or three to Cards' record.

              2) Arizona's defense allowed 46 yards per opening drive (31st) and 45.4 yds per opening drive of second half (last); the 45.7 ypd they allowed on 32 half-opening drives was 5.1 ypd worse than the next-worse team (Tennessee). This has to improve.

              1) Cardinals have won one playoff game since 1947, but they have reason for optimism. Seattle lost the Super Bowl; recent trend there is that Super Bowl losers have flopped the next year. Rams and 49ers were both under .500 last year, so for the first time ever in the desert, Redbird fans have legitimate right to look at rest of division and say, "Why not us?" Sunday: Atlanta Falcons
