Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..................
13) NC State has offered John Calipari roughly $2 mill a year to be its hoop coach; Rick Barnes already turned that figure down. Calipari makes little over million a year at Memphis, but has apparently also turned NC State down. If someone won't work for you for $2M a year, you've got problems.
12) So, as far as NC State hoops go, now what? They want a coach to energize Wolfpack Nation, but what bigname guy wants to walk in and butt heads with Coach K and Williams? Even though the money is better, no way is NC State a better job than Memphis, and now that is painfully obvious.
11) Matt Leinart fired his agent; in fact, Leigh Steinberg got fired by two USC guys this spring, both first-round picks. What exactly does a guy do to get fired, before his client has even been drafted?
10) First week of baseball season saw home sides go 47-43; favorites were 50-40, over was 49-39-2. So much for pitchers being ahead of hitters early in season.
9) Watched the Texas Rangers couple of times last few days; now I know why Orel Hershiser left Arlington to work for ESPN- Rangers are not very good. Could be long season for Buck Showalter, whom Ozzie Guillen sarcastically calls, "the man who invented baseball"
8) Sure sign I'm getting old: I can remember baseball games in three different Busch Stadiums.
7) Tim Hudson's first two starts in 2006: eight IP, 165 pitches thrown, 13 runs allowed.
6) Eric Milton makes $9.83M this season? No wonder the Reds never win.
5) Wonder if anyone in Montreal has noticed the Expos don't play there anymore.
4) One way to lower scoring in baseball; Avoid having teams play two series close to each other, which forces pitchers to make consecutive starts against the same team- that in itself increases scoring. If a hitter faces the same pitcher twice in
7-10 days, advantage hitter. For instance, Mets and Phillies, as division foes, play six series a year against each other. Why not play one series each month? Would make for better baseball.
3) I am encouraged by one thing in the NBA: It seems easier to build a team that can win (unless you're Isiah Thomas). All you need is one big star to build around.
2) So far on PGA Tour this season, 21 golfers have already earned $1M+. #125 on the money list is Kent Jones, sitting at $139,101; it usually takes around $550,000 to keep your card from year-to-year.
1) Must-see TV: Post-game at The Masters, when Hootie Johnson hosts get-together in Butler Cabin, with "his good friend Jim Nantz", then he acts surprised when Mickelson and Woods walk in to visit. Who did he expect to come in, Woody Austin and Fred Funk? Just awful television, bad enough to have to watch.
