Saturday's List of 13: NFL statistical knowledge
Statistics are way more than numbers; they're information, valuable knowledge that paints a picture; they are not absolute knowledge, but if you have your eyes and mind open to them, you can learn a lot. With that in mind, here are some statistical tidbits from the '05 NFL season that show us where teams might get better in '06, or where they might get worse.

    13) Cincinnati's +26 turnover ratio will be very tough to equal; they took ball away 45 times last year, eight more times than anyone else other than Carolina (42, +16). The Bengals need to get better on offense, in case their defense isn't as productive in '06.

    12) Miami will score more early in games with Mike Mularkey calling plays; last year, Buffalo outscored foes 57-14 on the first drive of their sixteen games, best scoring margin in league. The last three years Mularkey was in Pittsburgh, Steelers routinely were at top of league in this category. Bills should have dumped JP Losman instead of Mularkey.

    11) Buffalo's defense was last on third down (46.5%) and also last in red zone (5.35 ppp) so Dick Jauron has lot of room for improvement there, in his new job. Quick aside: Do you think Jauron's going to Ivy League school (Yale) helped him get job, with Harvard-educated Marv Levy now calling the shots in Buffalo?

    10) Seattle led NFL with 49.4 yards per drive on their first drive of a game, and 48.7 yards per drive on first drive of third quarter; they were 3rd in first drive points in first quarter, 5th in third quarter. Holmgren is a master play caller; overall, Seahawks' 93 points on their 32 first drives of a half were second only to Colts (128).

    9) Rams have tremendous upside, if they can reverse one stat; their opponents, as usual, started 34 drives in St Louis territory, most in NFL; not only that, but once they started those drives, Rams allowed 4.91 pts per drive, the worst average of any team, so not only were Rams sloppy with turnovers and special teams, their defense rarely picked up their teammates when they needed it most. If the new coaches can shore up that area, Rams figure to be a better team in '06. And that's not just wishful thinking.

    8) Arizona has a new stadium in '06, but if they want fans to come see them play, they'll need to play better defense; last year, Redbirds were 31st in league, allowing 46.0 yards per opening drive, then last in second half, allowing 45.4 yards per opening drive. Cards were outscored 111-46 on first drive of a half. That needs to improve.

    7) Tennessee has weird set of defensive stats; they led league by forcing 3-and-outs on 80 of 179 drives (44.7%) but on the 99 drives the opponent got first down on, they scored 48 TDs (). Texans allowed TDs on 27.8% of all their drives, worst figure in league, so when Titans weren't bullying other team's offense, their defense was really bad.

    6) How did a Jake Plummer offense only turn ball over 16 times last year? Denver foes started only ten drives in Bronco territory all season, tied with Jaguars for least in league.

    5) Giants were third in takeaways, T4th in turnover margin and 4th in least amount of opponent drives starting in their territory, all of which bodes well, as long as Eli keeps improving. He has yet to prove he can play well in late-season New Jersey weather.

    4) Want an underrated stat? Try incomplete pass margin: the top 5 teams last year were Steelers (+83), Denver (+69), Seattle (+62), Chiefs (+54) and Carolina (+43). Pretty good set of teams. The bottom five? Eagles (-78), Arizona (-74), Packers (-65), Raiders (-62) and Saints (-58). No winning teams in that second group.

    3) Minnesota was -11 in IP margin with Culpepper under center, +39 with Brad Johnson.

    2) Only two teams had twice as many offensive TDs as field goals tried: Seattle (54/24) and San Diego (49/24). I ask again, why did the Chargers let Drew Brees walk?

    1) Chicago's signing Brian Griese should help an offense that was 31st on third down (29%), 31st on black zone drives (0.70 ppp on drives that started 80+ yds from goal line), 30th in TD%age, 30th in 3-and-out %age and dead last in average yards per drive on first half of a half. Bears started 34 drives last year in enemy territory, most in NFL, but that defensive production might not always be there.
