Thursday's List of 13: Baseball salaries-- some thoughts
Because baseball doesn't have a salary cap, the pay structure in the game is as critical to who wins/loses as any other stats: batting average, ERA, OPS, you name it. With that in mind and since USA Today was kind enough to run all the major league salaries for guys on the Opening Day rosters, here are our 13 thoughts on major league salaries…..

                    13) Average salary by position: 1B- $4.96M; DH- $4.85M; 3B- $3.93M; OF- $3.47M; P- $2.50M; SS- $2.40M; C- $2.06M; 2B- $1.81M.

Derek Jeter is getting $20,600,000 this year, and he's not even best shortstop on the Bronx team.

                    12) Todd Helton makes $16.6M this year, or 40.3% of entire Colorado payroll.

                    11) Helton is the only one of the eight Rockies who makes $1M+ a year that isn't a pitcher.

                    10) Mike Hampton makes $14.5M this year, but he's hurt and won't throw a pitch.

                    9) Anna Benson must have done some math, and figured out that she could spend more of Kris Benson's $8,333,333 salary if they stayed married, so she pulled divorce papers Tuesday. Imagine how much money Benson would make if he was actually good?

                    8) Red Sox only have six players who make less than $1M a year. Even the Bronx Bombers have more (7) than that.

                    7) Dontrelle Willis is only Florida Marlin that makes more than $1.5M (he makes $4.35M). I'm assuming $327,000 is the minimum salary, since 17 of the 25 Marlins make that much. There should be a rule that doesn't let team spend only $14,998,500 in salaries.

                    6) Bronx Bombers have five players (20% of their roster) who make more than the entire Florida team.

                    5) Why the A's contend: They get major contributions from: Street ($339,625), Johnson ($330,000), Blanton ($327,000) and Haren ($550,000), as well as Swisher ($335,000), Duchscherer ($344,500), Scutaro ($340,000) and Frank Thomas ($500,000). Smart shoppers.

                    4) What genius decided to pay Met 2B Kaz Matsui $8,033,333 a year? Iguchi on the White Sox plays same position, is better player and only makes $2.4M.

                    3) Surprising that Ichiro Suzuki ($12.5M) isn't the highest paid Mariner. His kids aren't in Sprewell territory, I mean, $12.5M buys lot of meals, but he is only third-highest paid Seattle player, behind Sexton and Beltre.

                    2) Texas traded for Adam Eaton, who is a free agent after the season; he has already had finger surgery and is out for three months, without throwing pitch in regular season. Not exactly the best use for $4.6M, but then again, they're also paying Vicente Padilla $4.41M-is this a great country or what?

                    1) Chan Ho Park makes $15,505,142?????? Who? Why? How?
