Balkman continues quest for second straight NIT crown
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Renaldo Balkman is making his coach look
very good in postseason play.
Balkman scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as
third-seeded South Carolina booked a return trip to the National
Invitational Tournament championship game with a 78-63 victory
over top seed Louisville.
The defending champion in this event, the Gamecocks (22-16) are
looking to become the first team since St. John's in 1943-44 to
win back-to-back titles. They will face 2004 champion Michigan
in the title game Thursday.
South Carolina coach Dave Odom, who won a previous NIT title
with Wake Forest in 2000, improved to 17-3 in this event.
Winning in this tournament for the 13th time in 14 games, the
Gamecocks did not have to squeak out a victory like they
normally have thanks to the energetic play of Balkman. Coming
into the semifinals with consecutive wins of three points or
less, South Carolina took control with a decisive run late in
the first half.
Trailing 28-25 with less than 6 1/2 minutes left in the stanza,
Bryce Sheldon hit a 3-pointer and Balkman added a high-flying
dunk after blocking a shot by Brandon Jenkins.
The two stellar plays ignited a 17-4 run that gave South
Carolina a 42-32 lead at the half. Balkman, who finished
11-of-14 from the field, had seven points during the spurt and
11 in the first half.
Cardinals freshman Terrence Williams scored seven straight
points for his team early in the second half, cutting the
deficit to 48-41 with 17:04 to play.
However, Brandon Wallace had a dunk off an offensive rebound and
Balkman added a slam of his own to start a 10-1 run that made
it 58-42 with 11:56 remaining. Louisville got no closer than
eight points thereafter.
Tarence Kinsey scored 21 points and Wallace added 19 for the
Gamecocks, who shot 60 percent (33-of-55).
Taquan Dean had five 3-pointers along with 21 points in his
final collegiate game for the Cardinals (21-13), who lost to the
Gamecocks for just the fifth time in 18 all-time meetings.(Fucking CBS Sportsline...what a joke!)
