  • To All the Succesful Wagerers (i.e. Linemover, Chuck, Wayne...)

How do you guys stay disciplined? You guys seem to win night after night. I hit a hot streak, like in the conference tourney and first day of the Big Dance, and I feel like I am on a roll, so I hit MSU, Kansas and UConn hard and lose 10 days with of wins. Then I have a nice streak this week and get my doors blown off by Memphis tonight putting me in a hole, losing all of my profits and then some. I give you guys all the credit in the world. Hell, I look at Chuck's record and it is all pluses...how do you avoid ramping up your units and dumping 1000 tokens on a game? I am so fucking pissed at myself.....

Buddy i'm 35 and i've been gambling for probably 19 years very consistantly year round. I, like probably many others got crushed for about 5 years. I thought i could open up a paper and circle winners. When i lost i would double up the next time and lose again. What do i do? I call #900 numbers because i'm young and stupid and they "Guarantee" Winners. Again, it didn't happen.

The internet really took off at that time and i figured if i was going to bet day in and day out on everything under the sun that i better get more info on what i'm betting. The internet world has totally changed capping a game. The problem i ran into was that even though i felt i knew more i would always get pissed about a loss and react by going heavier on the next day. It was killing me and i would lose 3 days in a row with high wagers and pull back the next few days after worrying about how much more i would lose and go on a winning streak. In the end i'm down a shitload because my .500 record that week consisted of losing every huge wager and winning all the small ones.

I also used to bet all my games equally each night. One day everything would be $100 each, i would lose and the next night everything would be $150 and i would lose again. Night 3 they would all be $50 and i would sweep the board. It was unbelieveable and the worst thing is i would always seem to win my favorite games but gain nothing from it.

About 5 years ago i decided i needed to set money management "In Stone" for myself and did. I'm a true believer that you have to play each sport on a 2 scale basis every day. You know more often than not your BIG plays are going to win more than they lose so you want a (2-2) day to be a profitable one if your 2 big plays are the ones that won. It works great for me. An example is College Hoops. Tomorrow there are 2 games and before even looking at them i know i'm either betting 1 of 2 amounts if i wager on the games. If you were a $100 bettor you would go in thinking either $100 or $200. You then look at the games. If you love one and like the other, you put $200 on one and $100 on the other. The next day you go in thinking the same exact way ($100 or $200). No matter how much more or less you like the games compared to the previous days you know it's $200 for the ones you "Love" and $100 for the one's you like. If you chase on a night game than you still bet $100 or $200 no matter how much you are down or even up on the day.

It to me was a matter of putting a couple numbers i felt comfortable with on each sport. Of course you bet more on the sports you do well in and less on the sports you struggle in. That also saves you big in the end.

It sounds crazy but i really had to totally structure my wagering and stick to it. Most don't have to do this but i did. I bet on ALOT of stuff each day and if i didn't keep it structured i would be in dissaray and broke!

        Awesome write-up Wayne.

Ahhh that first paragraph brings back memories ... 1-800 numbers, "we will bury your man" ... 1-900 numbers, "send us $500 and when you win, call us tomorrow"
"Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant'
is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'"

my advise to you is to bet on all the games you have a hunch on.....if you get butterflies, double your bet, and if you see the chungster on the particular game, triple your bet.....follow great cappers like the mighty quinn and brandon "movie star" lang also.....there need any more info?

              signed,

oh, i forgot...play as many parlays as possible, how can you pass up a 6-1 payday on your favorite plays?

              good luck

money mgmt is as important as picking winners. the great ones will win 56%. if you keep ramping up exponentially, you will lose. you can ramp up linearly. this is what i do, fwiw. My best pick will never be more than 5% of my bankroll. What's that? you don't know your bankroll!!! STOP & figure out what you can comfortably lose over an extended period of time. I use 1-5 units (1% to 5% of my bankroll). As i win or lose, my bankroll increases or decreases. Using the formula above, when i'm hot, my bets increase, but never out of proportion to bankroll.

I've also never believed in the % and bankroll thing. It's great for some and that's good for them. It didn't work for me and i have to be honest in saying at least 75/80 % of gamblers (here) don't have a "Bankroll". They wager each day with thoughts on winning and if they lose they move on to the next day. The younger you are, the less likely you are to have a set bankroll. Of course that's not true wth all but i know it is with most. That's why most guys that are not doing well constantly say ... "FUCK"! They are not using set bankrolls.

That's where money management and setting yourself some structure really comes into play!

Wayne, that was a great write-up....I learned the hard way myself for over 15-20 years of losing and paying for more losers and taking out loans to pay off gambling debts....I even quit for a few years to get my life in order and made a committment to my family that if I were to start gambling again, I would bet only with the money I had saved up and not bill money or money I didn't have...I had a lot of payment plans to books over those years, and it made me sick to see half my paychecks going to them...

It took a long time, and after meeting an old time Bookie, age 85, who I played Softball for, on his USSA Major National World Championship Team, taught me the rules of money management in gambling....I became very good friends with him until his death, but learned in the last 10+ years to stay in more control and really start to enjoy these sports games more..>The only thing I can pass on from him is, to save up enough money on the side until your bankroll is were you want to start at....Say $500 and only bet no more than 10% or $50 on any one game...And then continue to bet in that order that your $$$$ increases or decreases....If your bakroll increases to $2,000 in 3 weeks, then you can start betting $200 on your big Plays...But if your bankroll decreases to $200, then bet no more than $20 on the Big plays...

It will take a while to build that bankroll, but you'll enjoy the sport more and really learn what teams to take that win, that year...The thing is you have to be patient and at the beginning of every season, start out betting about 1 to 2% of your bankroll, until you see who the good and bad teams are...They change every year because of Free Agency...
Cinderella teams come out every year in every sport and you have to take notice early to which ones are legit contenders..
And if you see someone that has a GOY the first week, they are really flipping a coin and hoping to be right...They have a 50/50 chance of winning and also a 50/50 chance of losing...I wouldn't want to waste my bankroll on a 50% chance...Wait until a team wins a few in a row and shows they are strong, then take a chance on a big game..The odds are now in your favor, and you will win alot more than lose...

Wayne/Chuck - your info is close to what i have seen in my whole 1 and a 1/2 years of gambling. I use to bet 1500 per game before I realize the folly in it. I now enjoy betting mostly 100 to 200 per game as you described and am in it for the fun. Learning to cap has been rewarding enuff.

It's true. Alot of people think they are going to hit and pay rent or a car payment. They lose and come up with the money but they now realize they REALLY need to win the next week ... and lose again.

Every gambler has had highs and lows in gambling and i can promise you that 90% of the lows were worse than the highs.

The Bookie & Sportsbook LOVE an emotional gambler. They simply won't win in the long run. I guarantee it!

The only thing you can hope for is that they realize it before they are financially distraught, without a wife, or in the "Bad Credit" line for everything. This game "Cripples" people daily and the "Rush" will still be there when watching the games and gambling with "Structure" but the stress won't be!

Frank posted some good money management rules a long time ago.

Wayne and Chuck! This is what makes you guys to great! You take your time to educate and help others. That information is sooooo valuable. I am 44 and went through years of debt because of gambling debt, until two things happened. The internet and actually off shore accounts. Now I gamble and deposit what I can afford to wager and or lose. I don't have that $2000 money line with the local that makes me think I can wager $500 a game and then I owe him $2000 I don't have. It has taught me to be more disciplined and helped me to build a nice bankroll. Its there and I can dip into it when I want. This site has been HUGE for me though! Wayne, you, Chuck, CB, RJ and guys like Linemover and Wiener, Frank have made me soooo much money. For that I am Thankful and am better for listening to your advice and information. That is what truly makes BC the BEST!! Great write ups you guys! Thanks again!
