    Friday's NCAA games
Home team won both BC-Villanova Big East games last season, before Eagles bolted for ACC; Eagles won 67-66 at home, then lost 76-70 in Philly; both home sides were 5.5-pt favorites. BC is a power team that is long way from home for third weekend in a row (Greensboro, Salt Lake) while Wildcats slept in own beds a week ago, but playing on road no biggie for BC team that went 8-3 away from home in tough ACC- this is first of former league rivals they've faced. BC had total of only 16 turnovers last week coming back from 71-65 deficit in OT to beat Pacific in 1st round.

Playing in Washington, DC is virtual home game for Geo Mason (Fairfax, VA) squad that won 70-67 at Wichita Feb 18, shooting 52% from floor, making 11-23 treys, in 66-possession game that saw Shockers shoot just 41.2% from floor (10-27 from arc). This is just third-ever meeting of 7-11 seeds in this round; LMU beat Alabama 62-60 in '90 (-1.5), 11-seed Temple beat Penn St 84-72
in '01(-4.5), so 11-seed has been favored all three times they've faced a #7. This should be low scoring game, as Wichita ranked 281st in country in pace, George Mason 273rd (out of 334).

Florida was most impressive team on first weekend, winning by 24,22 points; they beat Syracuse (75-70), Providence (87-77) of Big East during season. Georgetown beat Ohio State in Dayton after holding Northern Iowa to 49 pts, so they defend without a lot of fouls (foes tried only 21 FTs in two games). Hoyas lost at home to Vanderbilt of SEC, 68-61 in November. #3 seeds aren't usually favored in this round; since '95, they're 3-5 vs spread as favorite in regional semis. Key matchup is whether Florida's 6-10 star Noah can do damage inside vs Hoyas' 7-2 Hibbert, who is 50 pounds heavier than the Gators best player.

Washington, UConn are both Huskies, both like to play at a fast pace- only two times UW has been in this round the last 20 yrs, they lost (75-74 vs UConn, '98 (+11.5) (Bob Bender coached the Huskies then, not Romar) and 93-79 vs Louisville in '05 (+1.5)). UConn is 6-2 last eight times in this round. UW took 39 FTs in 67-64 win vs Illinois Saturday (Illini took 11); Huskies led by 14 early, then trailed by 11, but prevailed despite making only 37.8% from floor. UConn doesn't have 40-minute attention span; they led Kentucky 43-31 at half, but let UK back in game, after they trailed Albany after 30 minutes in first round. Good game.

Friday's List of 26: Random thoughts, real housewives.....
        26) Lot of stuff happened Thursday, so we're expanding list to 26 for tonight, not the least of which was both Bill Russell, Bill Walton in stands in Oakland for NCAAs Thursday. Lot of wins sitting in those two seats.

Epic collapse by Gonzaga, which led by 17 in first half; rarely do you see a game where the team that won deserved to lose as much as UCLA did. Bruins did score the last 11 points of the game to pull it out, but they played poorly throughout. This was a game that Gonzaga lost, more than UCLA won..

        25) CBS' Gus Johnson has to calm down some; he was yelling like a kid doing an audition tape for a junior high school job.

        24) Bob Huggins will win at Kansas State, and he'll win next season; his top four scorers are back, and Wildcats lost lot of close games this year. He'll add one or two big recruits, and K-State will reap immediate benefits.

Didn't take long for Cincinnati, Andy Kennedy to come to parting of ways; during day, Bearcats suspended two seniors for grades, which just about guaranteed a loss to S. Carolina in their NIT quarterfinal game. Cincinnati still only loss by 3, but they did lose, and things moved quickly from that point

        23) Cincinnati hired Mick Cronin, a one-time UC aide that had bolted Cincinnati to work for Rick Pitino; funny thing about Cronin, he had six JC kids and a transfer from Virginia on his 15-man roster at Murray State, so not like he's going to be at Cincinnati recruiting Rhodes Scholar candidates.

        22) Ole Miss then immediately hired Kennedy to be its coach. He is from Mississippi, and he has a nice 21-win season on a resume that previously had including a lot of recruiting. I am guessing what made Cronin more appealing to Cincinnati was that Kennedy embraced his relationship with Huggins, while Cronin distanced himself from his former boss.

        21) There was also basketball played Thursday; Duke lost in the regional semifinals for fifth time in last seven years, as the poet JJ Redick shot 3-18, and LSU used their superior athletic ability to win the majority of loose balls in an odd 62-54 win. If you heard a noise at 9:30 pm, it was CBS executives hitting their heads on the wall, with Duke out of the tournament.

        20) The clock struck midnight just after midnight for West Va, as Kenton Paulino stuck a trey at the buzzer to oust the gutty Mountaineers, 74-71. Pittsnogle had hit a 3 to tie game at 71 with five seconds left, but Longhorns didn't call timeout, and a senior made a huge play. LSU-Texas will be excellent.

        19) Memphis is in position to be first #1 seed in west to win the region since UConn in '99, but fact is, so far, they've won against the 16,9 and 13 seeds in west. Saturday will be severe test for a very talented, but young Memphis club that beat UCLA 88-80 in November.

        18) While we're on Memphis, enough of John Calipari being touted as national coach of year. Good lord, he has awesome talent on his squad; it is young, but he won a lame league, so to say he did better job than someone who turned a program around in a tough league, thats just not right.

        17) UCLA was pathetic in first half vs Gonzaga; they had no baskets when they had seven turnovers. With Duke out of the picture, CBS needed Gonzaga to win for ratings purposes. Whoops. What a bitter defeat for the Zags, who dominated UCLA for 38 minutes, but it is, as they say, a 40-minute game.

        16) Once Memphis won, they sat back and watched couple of teams they've already beaten this season. Calipari made the Final Four ten years ago, he looks good to get there this year, especially if Bruins don't pick up their play a few levels.

        15) Georgia Dome site hurt Duke; the ACC tournament is in St Petersburg next year, but not sure if its in dome or in an arena where the NHL's Lightning play. Teams that shoot from arc have harder time in dome, and Duke, West Virginia both lost. The ACC needs to play its tourney in dome now and then, so their teams get some experience playing in them.

        14) Keyshawn Johnson signed with the Panthers, setting up two grudge matches a year with Jon Gruden's Bucs. When it comes to 3rd-and-6, Jake should still look for Ricky Proehl.

        13) Rough year for Stanford's tree mascot: one student got fired for being drunk inside the costume during a game, now another student gets tossed from NCAA tourney game for "Dancing in unassigned area." Either the NCAA has gone completely Gestapo on us, or the kid inside the tree just couldn't stomach watching any more women's hoops. Either way, the tree has been suspended for remainder of hoop season.

        12) Tree-huggers should have their lawsuits ready soon.

        11) Adam Vinatieri signs with the Colts, Mike Vanderjagt with Dallas; pretty soon, Vikings are going to sign Jan Stenerud to a multi-year deal.

        10) By the way, the last non-soccer style kicker was Rick Danmeier of the Vikings; last good one was Mark Moseley of the Redskins.

        9) Now that Terrell Owens is in Dallas, what is over/under on interviews with Michael Irvin this year? 10.5? Higher? The regular season is only 17 weeks, plus preseason and playoffs. 12 seems like a better number.

        8) If you're a Raider fan, how depressing is signing Aaron Brooks for two years?

        7) Not the best March for Bill Self; he goes out as a 4-seed in first round (he went out as 3-seed last year), and now K-State hires Bob Huggins. Better yet, Self's team will be top 5 pick in country next year, so even if he makes Final Four, people will say he was supposed to. Not good.

        6) Who wants to bet that next year's K-State-Texas Tech game is a Big Monday game next winter?

        5) I tried to watch a non-sports program late Wednesday night: "Real Housewives of Orange County" on Bravo, and what do I find? One of the housewives is mother of Shane Keough, whose dad Matt pitched for the A's in late 70's-early 80's. Shane was awaiting the MLB Draft, to see where he got selected.

        4) Unfortunately, the kid seemed kind of stupid, skipping his high school graduation to lounge in his pool (in reality, pouting because he hadn't been drafted yet. I must admit, it is a really nice pool), but eventually, the A's drafted him on the 36th round, so he better be good. His dad was a decent big league pitcher.

        3) Of course, the kid struck a nerve with me, when he and his dad are scanning the computer for draft results. "Is this on television?" the kid asks. "We don't do that" was his father's reply (I think elder Keough is still a scout for the A's).

        2) Think about it for a second: there is a reality TV show about rich housewives in southern California, but the amateur draft of our "national pastime" isn't anywhere on TV, even though there is a lot of interest in it. Any wonder why football and the NBA are both more popular than baseball is?

        1) While I'm on the subject, one of the other women on show is so incredibly stupid and self-absorbed, all she did was complain about her rich fiance' (guy drives a Humvee, puts her up in 5,000-square foot house), until she found out her engagement ring cost $115,000. Predictably, her tune changed a little after that.
