      Wednesday's NIT games
Winners of three games tonight and tomorrow's game head to New York, so there is some strong motivation to win now........

Hofstra beat CAA rival Old Dominion twice this year, 76-68 (+8) at ODU Jan 19, then 65-63 at home Feb 2 (-2). Monarchs won its first two NIT games, despite shooting 37%,33% from floor- they took 77 foul shots in those games (58-77, foes 27-46). OT win at St Joe's was just two days ago, so quick turnaround for Hofstra team that had three guys play over 40 minutes in Philly. Winner goes to MSG for some rare national TV exposure.

Miami lost 74-53 at Michigan Nov 29 (+5.5) in game that Miami was -15 on boards, -7 in turnovers, and shot just 2-10 from arc. Michigan hasn't left home in NIT, needing two OTs to dispatch Notre Dame team that led 41-33 at half Monday. Miami on road again after 53-52 win at Creighton Monday; their two NIT wins are by combined total of four points. Last six Miami games have been decided by four or less points.

Not only didn't Missouri State make NCAAs, they didn't get top seed in NIT, so they hit road to play big-name Louisville, which has to motivate Bears club that held Stanford to 39.1% in first round, Houston to 32.3% in second (Houston was 12-43 on 3's in that game). Mo State turned ball over 24 times vs Houston, an athletic team- they won nine of last 11 games, were 5-4 SU on a difficult Missouri Valley road.

Wednesday's List of 13: NFL Draft tidbits.............
        13) If Jay Cutler is drafted before Vince Young, I want to bet someone on their careers; I feel strongly about this. Games count more than workouts. Young is the better player.

        12) Denver threw only seven picks last year; good luck matching that. Broncos are only team with two first round picks this year (22,29).

        11) Cleveland gave up 45 sacks last year, but doesn't list offensive line as a priority; they probably figure if they fix up the defense, they won't be behind as much, so they won't have to throw as often, which automatically lowers the sack total.

        10) Buffalo wasn't a terrible team last year, but they gave up 138 rushing yards per game, second-worst in NFL, which explains why defensive tackle is a draft priority.

        9) Of the 14 players the Ravens drafted in last two years, only one is a starter, and they traded up to get Kyle Boller. Ugh.

        8) ESPN's draft magazine actually ranks the top eight long snappers, which begs the question, why not the top eight holders for kicks?
P.S. Guy from Marshall is top-ranked long snapper.

        7) The Bengals picked off 31 passes in 16 games last year; doesn't that seem like a tough number to match this season? Marvin Lewis has the say on draft day, and he's proven to have a good eye. How many teams passed on him as a head coach and are now kicking themselves?

        6) It will be painful to watch if the Lions take a receiver in first round for fourth straight year.

        5) Green Bay drafted eleven guys last year, and only one started, and Pack weren't exactly a good team. Favre isn't the best QB for a bad team, as his 30 INTs attest to.

        4) Apparently, this year's draft is deeper at tight end than it has been for years. Four of them could get drafted first day.

        3) As potent as the Chiefs' offense has been, their receivers aren't very good, other than Dante Hall, who is a return man more than he is a receiver. Will be interesting to see if they shift directions at all under Herm Edwards.

        2) The Raiders intercepted five passes last year; they don't have a QB on their roster who has ever been a starter. Unless Art Shell has been transformed into a magician, this is pretty sad outfit right now. Hard to believe.

        1) My theory for this spring is that e Texans will be a surprise team next year (pleasant surprise). They just need to find another blocker or two to protect David Carr. I f I am them, I trade down for extra picks, draft a couple of O-linemen.
