Griese reaches five-year deal with BearsESPN.com news services

Free-agent quarterback Brian Griese has agreed to a five-year deal with the Chicago Bears, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Tuesday.

Financial terms are not yet known.

Griese lost his starting job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Chris Simms in 2005 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury after leading the club to a 5-1 start.

Griese, 30, completed 112-of-174 passes for 1,136 yards, with seven touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 2005 before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

In eight seasons, Griese has completed 1,463-of-2,318 passes for 16,344 yards, with 103 touchdown passes and 78 interceptions, for a career efficiency rating of 84.8. A former University of Michigan star, Griese has started in 72 of 75 appearances with Denver (1998-2002), Miami (2003) and Tampa Bay (2004-05).

      I like it actually.

Gives us that security in case Grossman gets hurt again, and added to that a GREAT competition for the #1 spot.

We're adding depth, which is better then previous years.

da bears still need a "Franchise QB", not a loser like Griese.

If you've followed the Bears QB history, you'll understand that I don't believe that will ever happen.

And Griese has won everywhere he's been (Michigan, Denver, Tampa)...so that loser tag I think doesn't fit.

I was never a Bear fan, only a Walter Payton fan, but I have to say this is a good move on the bears part, As durable as Gossman is it's nice to have a back up the caliber of Griese is. I wish GB would have looked at him! Aaron Rogers is going to be another Joey Harrington! Shit he looks like he could pass as his younger brother! LOL

And coming from a Paker fan...that holds a lot of weight cause its tough to compliment each other! lol

If Brett comes back...I think you might be right about Rogers. He needs to play this year if he's gonna be worth anything.

Grise will be an adequate fill in QB for da bears. TB really likes Sims and the bloodline. He came of age in the win over Washington. Griese also has the bloodline and will do his part when needed.

100% agreed....which is why even though it pisses Grossman off, the Bears are not trying to stroke ego's...they're actually trying to win a championship.
