    Monday's NIT games
Notre Dame lost 71-67 at home to Michigan Dec 3 (-3), first of 10 Irish losses by six or less points this season. Irish were just 6-20 from arc in that game, but they're 6-3 in last nine games, and 6-1 vs spread as road underdog this season. Michigan's win in the first round vs UTEP was just their third in last nine games- you watch them play, and they don't always play hard. Wolverines shot 11-21 from arc in their first round win vs UTEP.

Hofstra is 12-2 in last fourteen games, losing to NC-Wilmington twice; they held Nebraska to 34.5% from floor in first round win, now visit St Joe's squad that lost A-14 title game at Xavier 62-61 then easily beat Rutgers in first round of NIT, 71-62, holding the Knights to 36% from floor. Hofstra won at LaSalle, in only win vs A-14 team. Hawks won nine of their last ten games; they won only game vs CAA team, by 10 over crosstown rival Drexel.

People in Missouri Valley have to be happy with both Wichita, Bradley in Sweet 16; Creighton gets an ACC team in their gym here, so added motivation for Bluejays, 2-4 in the last six games after first round win vs Akron (71-60; Zips 35.5%). Miami lost four of its last five games away from home; they're 3-7 in the last ten games overall. Miami shot 37% from floor in first round win but forced 22 turnovers to hold off Oklahoma State, 62-59.

Clemson won four of last five games, but only one of those was on road; they held road-weary Louisiana Tech to 36%, forcing 19 turnovers in first round win. Louisville was awful in Big East tourney, but beat Delaware State up in last game; they haven't won consecutive games since Jan 7-9, but they beat Miami, FL in their only game this season vs ACC foe, 58-43. Clemson did not play any Big East teams this season.

Missouri State was 2nd seed in MVC tourney; they're thinking they could be in Sweet 16 had they just gotten a chance. Bears won seven of last nine games, covered seven of last ten as fave at home. Houston plays fast, so this game will go up and down; Cougars are 3-3 in last six games; they're 4-3 as road dog in '06, winning at LSU in November. Both teams forced 20+ turnovers in their last game.

Manhattan won nine of last twelve games, but quick turnaround after Saturday morning win at Maryland (87-84), as Jaspers got outrebounded 51-33 but forced 20 turnovers vs less-than-into it Terrapins. Old Dominion is only team left in NIT that has won a road game, winning 79-61 at Colorado, getting to line 41 times. ODU beat MAAC runnerup Marist 84-71 in Bracketbuster (-8).

Monday's List of 13: 13 things I leanred this weekend
        13) Bracketbuster Saturday is now a big part of college hoop; George Mason won at Wichita 70-67 last month, and now the two get to meet again, in a Sweet 16 game. Interesting.

        12) Missouri Valley teams proved they belong, with Bradley and the Shockers advancing to next weekend.

        11) Big 11got shut out of Sweet 16, and Big 12 teams didn't do much better, with only Texas left. Meanwhile, MVC got teams into Sweet 16 as a #7 and #13 seed, and George Mason beat both an ACC and Big 11 team. Take that, Billy Packer.

        10) Saturday, teams shot 108-299 (36.1%) from arc; Sunday, it was 92-294 (31.3%). For the second round combined, teams were 200-593 (33.7%); for the whole weekend, kids combined to shoot 640-1,848 from the arc (34.6%); an average of 38.5 3's were taken in each game.

        9) New trend, on small scale: marginal NBA players retiring, then coaching at their alma mater. Jeff Ruland (Iona), Jim Les (Bradley) and Larry Krystkowiak (Montana) all coached in the tournament this year, leading their alma maters.

        8) In their two tournament wins, George Mason was 27-45 at the foul line; their opponents were 7-9. Beating Michigan St and North Carolina in same weekend is pretty good weekend.

        7) Bud Selig must be cursed. It actually rained in San Diego Saturday night, at the WBC semifinals. Ground crew there is not exactly well-versed in putting the tarp down.

        6) Cuba-Japan WBC final actually makes the NCAA women's tournament sound appealing; well, maybe not.......how about a spring training game with major league teams? That works.

        5) As Arizona State looks for a new hoop coach, the key is to hang on in Tempe until Lute Olson retires at Arizona, then it will be more manageable to try and build Sun Devils' program. Olson is around 70, so five more years should be his max.

        4) Northwestern State coach Mike McConathy was teammate of USC coach Tim Floyd when they played at Louisiana Tech

        3) Georgetown is in Sweet 16 because they played tough foes out of conference: Duke, Vanderbilt, Oregon, Illinois. Unlike his father, coach Thompson isn't afraid of playing tough foes before his conference season starts.

        2) To the nitwits in Raleigh who want Herb Sendek fired, only two ACC teams have been in NCAAs five years in row: Duke and NC State. How was your team before Sendek got there?

        1) George Mason plays Wichita State, with winner playing in a regional final. Wow.
