Sunday's NCAA games
Pitt slumped at end of regular season, but won four of last five games; they crushed Kent Friday, making 67.4% of its shots and holding Kent to 39%. Panthers are 10th in country in defensive efficiency, 17th in offensive boards, 3rd on defensive boards, so Bradley (7-1 in last eight games) which shot 33% from arc until Friday, had better go 11-21 beyond arc again if they are to make Sweet 16. Both teams have legit 7-footers. Bradley is also good on defense; since '89, 13-seeds are 4-9 against spread (0-3 in the west region). I have a selection on this game in box below.
Bucknell shot 38.6% from floor vs Arkansas, but made 11-21 on its 3's, which is why they beat Hogs; that, and game was only a 59 possession (very slow) pace. Memphis will go up and down- their win vs Oral Roberts was 69 possessions. Overall athletic superiority of Memphis should take toll on Bucknell, much as in last year's loss to Wisconsin, when Badgers' size wore down the spunky Bison in second half of nine-point loss. Tigers won six in row since losing at UAB, only teams that beat them are UAB, Duke and Texas. Bucknell's gritty defense will keep them in this for half, but unless they shoot 60% from arc, forget the upset.
North Carolina was down 31-30 at half to Murray State, but best player for Racers broke his foot and didn't play in second half of 69-65 Carolina win; only twice in last eleven years has 3-seed in East advanced to Sweet 16. George Mason won CAA, then won first round game with second-best player suspended- they'll get him back for this. Mason is 11-2 in last thirteen games; they lost season opener in OT at Wake Forest of ACC. Patriots shot 59% from floor vs Michigan State, took 26 FTs, to five for Spartans, so they get ball to good places. Carolina is 7-1 last eight games.
UConn is 8-2 in last ten second round games, with both losses a year after they won national title; they're 8-0 vs spread in other eight games. Kentucky is 14-3 in last seventeen second round tilts; they're just 4-3 last seven games overall. #1 seeds are 12-9 vs spread last 5+ years. Question I have here is whether UConn will play hard for 40:00, which they didn't do vs Albany Friday, or in first round loss in Big East tourney. When a coach subs or calls timeout in first minute of a half, he ain't happy. Kentucky has some size inside; they covered five of last six as underdog.
Northwestern State, West Virginia are both veteran teams; 1-3-1 defense of Mountaineers is hard to play against- Demons like to shoot from corners though, which could help. #14 seeds, in the second round, are 3-7 vs spread since '89; Demons are just 2nd 14-seed to win game in last seven years. WVa was Cinderella in last year's tournament; they made just 11-32 treys in first round win, but held Salukis to 46 pts in easy win. Again, Demons are unafraid, having won at Stillwater, Starkville, so they'll play two platoons of guys, shoot a lot of 3's, but West Virginia will make more shots than Iowa did. Interesting matchup.
Texas won 55-possession game vs Penn Friday; they're going to get same thing here vs NC State's Princeton-style offense- they also won 55-possession game vs Cal. Longhorns played pair of their guys whole 40 minutes Friday, as slower pace allows them to hide their thin bench. Barnes won his last three second round games by 4,10,3 pts. NC State upset UConn in this round a year ago. Closest thing Texas has played to Princeton offense would be their 76-75 win vs West Virginia in November. Longhorns are superior inside, but so was Cal. Texas was just 2-9 from outside arc vs Penn. Wolfpack will force them to take more jumpers.
Favorites are 20-11 vs spread in 2-7 games since '91. Buckeyes will have crowd edge in Dayton, but Hoyas had enough poise to beat Duke, so they are capable foe, and hard to play against, ranking 329th in country in pace, playing Princeton-style; they won in first round vs Northern Iowa in its first round game, with best scorer Green having off game. Ohio State played against a Princeton-style team (Northwestern) in their league; they beat the Wildcats 56-53 in Evanston March 1; Friday, they were just 5-22 from arc, 13-23 from line in first round vs Davidson.
Since '91, Lute Olson is 14-5 in NCAAs with one day to prepare; he is 9-1 in last ten second round games, but he has road game here, playing Villanova in building where Wildcats have played four times this year. Arizona pounded non-athletic Wisconsin Friday, racing to 35-11 lead, shooting 59% from floor. Wildcats were sluggish in Monmouth win; game was 11-6 after first 13:00. Very tough 1-8 game for Villanova; #1's are 12-9 vs spread last 5+ years, in second round games. Arizona was erratic all season now they face team that is good on perimeter as they are- this is good pick for last game of weekend, should be fun to watch.

Sunday's List of 13: We watch hoops, we think of things......
13) At first, I thought Bruce Pearl was giving ESPN too much access, then I realize his genius; he is using this experience to fuel his recruiting- he'll need better players to keep his Vols at the level they are right now.
12) Illinois-Washington featured the team in orange uniforms playing the team in purple; these schools make millions off of college basketball- no one has white uniforms?
11) The best player on Bucknell isn't on scholarship; he got there they year before they started giving them out. Not sure why they didn't give him one later, seeing as he is Player of the Year in Patriot League, but no one seems to be bothered by this except me, so I'll let it go.
10) I just read that the Cowboys gave Terrell Owens a large contract. There is an old saying that fits: "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it." Guaranteed, though, Eagles-Cowboys is a Sunday night game next season.
9) The mother of Texas A&M coach Billy Gillespie is named Wimpy. Just thought you'd like to know.
8) LSU made just 2-12 behind arc Saturday, but the second of two made 3's was the difference in tense 58-57 win over A&M Saturday. Aggies looked good when LSU came down for the last shot and just jacked a trey, but it went in. Tough loss, as Aggies might also lose their coach to greener pastures, which would be bad thing for A&M program that made tournament for first time in 19 years. Good thing for Wimpy, though.
7) Florida won their first two tournament games by 26,22 pts; they've been most impressive team into Sweet 16 thus far.
6) Washington-Illinois was great game of runs; Huskies led in first half, 28-14, then fell behind early in second half, before coming back to reach Sweet 16 for second year in row. Both teams are very well-coached. would have loved to see a plus-minus chart for players in this seesaw game.
5) I'm guessing when ESPN agreed to televise the WBC, they didn't envision Cuba-Dominican/Japan-Korea semis. Fidel Castro must be yukking it up in Havana, with Cuba in finals.
4) Ichiro did something Saturday I've never seen, stealing on 3-0 count. He made it easily, but I've never seen that before.
3) Adam Morrison better grow up before he gets to the NBA; he had war of words with couple Hoosiers Saturday- when it gets physical, Morrison gets little bit whiny. This from a guy who took more foul shots than Indiana's top three scorers did combined this season.
2) As the Mike Davis era ends at Indiana, consider that Zags were 32-41 from foul line Saturday, Indiana 2-6, and key play in game was Killingsworth getting technical for his 4th foul with over sixteen minutes left in game. Huge call. Hoosiers hit on 16-36 treys and still lost by 10.
1) 65 teams have been trimmed to 24; after tomorrow, we will know the Sweet 16. Hard to envision someone beating Duke; everyone else seems to have definitive flaws.
