TEXAS SPORTSWIRE
STL W WILLIAMS -R (8-1, 1.99 ERA) vs BOS B H KIM -R (2-5, 4.08 ERA)
The Cardinals and the Red Sox open up their Interleague series in Boston. Both teams had Monday off. In St. Louis' last game on Sunday, Scott Rolen finished 4-for-5 with a grand slam to lead the Cardinals past the Orioles 11-10 as -230 home favorites. Jim Edmonds belted a pair of homers, scored four times and drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who have won six of their last seven games. Tino Martinez went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jason Simontacchi (4-3) collected the win, yielding no runs and no hits in an inning of relief. Cal Eldred tossed 1 2/3 innings for his seventh save. Matt Morris started for St. Louis and gave up seven runs and 11 hits in five innings of work. Edmonds belted a two-run homer in the first to open the scoring. J.D. Drew singled with one away and Edmonds homered one batter later to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. St. Louis added a run in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Martinez reached on Jeff Conine's fielding error and Mike Matheny singled. Morris then helped his own cause with an RBI base hit to right field. Edmonds led off the third inning with his second homer of the day, sending Johnson's 3-1 pitch over the center-field wall. The Cardinals posted a five-run inning of their own in the sixth to take the lead for good. Simontacchi led off with a double and went to third one batter later when Drew reached on an infield hit. Pujols then doubled to left to score Simontacchi and B.J. Ryan replaced Driskill on the hill. Ryan walked Edmonds and Rick Bauer took over for Ryan. Bauer was greeted by Rolen, who cracked a grand slam to deep left-center field for an 11-7 advantage. Baltimore countered with three runs in the seventh to make it 11-10. In Boston's last game on Sunday, Derek Lowe allowed one run in six innings and Kevin Millar hit two homers and drove in four runs to lead Boston to a 9-1 win over Milwaukee as -175 road favorites. Lowe (6-3) surrendered five hits while striking out five to earn the victory for the Red Sox, who won for the fourth time in 11 games. Lowe left with a blister on his right thumb. Ramiro Mendoza and Hector Almonte combined for three scoreless frames in relief. Todd Walker finished with two hits and two RBI, Johnny Damon added two hits and scored twice and Nomar Garciaparra contributed two hits in the win. Boston increased the lead to 8-1 in the seventh on an RBI single by Damon and a two-run double by Walker. Tonight's pitching matchup features Woody Williams of the Cardinals against Byung-Hyun Kim of the Red Sox. Williams dominated the Blue Jays his last time out, carrying a no-hit bid into the eighth inning. Boston's lineup is nearly as tough as Toronto's, and he'll have to deal with a DH. The worst thing for Williams, though, is that he won't get to bat. Kim makes his Fenway debut in a Sox uniform. Kim pitched three times at Fenway last season, earning two saves for the Diamondbacks and not allowing a run. Kim made a sparking starting debut for the Sox, holding the Pirates to one run over seven innings.
SELECTION: ST. LOUIS
