Monday's List of 13: Initial impressions of Field of 65
13A) Before I start on my initial impressions of the Field of 65 I am going to rant, because my Long Beach 49ers got left out of the NIT. Who is the idiot responsible for this? Long Beach at Stanford would have been awesome, JC kids vs smart kids, but no, we get Virginia at Stanford...the head of the Selection Committee for the NCAA tournament is the AD at Virginia. Coincidence? I doubt it.
Long Beach's kids are great to watch, they play hard as hell, would have made a good show at midnight on ESPN. Damn.
OK, I feel better now.
Time to turn the volume on the TV down as I watch Mexico-Korea baseball, put Faith Hill in the stereo and get cracking. On to my initial impressions of the tournament. More to come each day this week, as we head towards Thursday.........
13) Belmont vs UCLA. Bruins vs Bruins. John Wooden vs a team named after a racetrack. Belmont shot 50% from field for the year, but they lost five games in the Atlantic Sun, so not a bad draw for Ben Howland.
12) Upset alert for Boston College, which played tough game in North Carolina on Sunday, and now has to play out in Salt Lake City on Thursday-- thanks a lot. Plus, Pacific has beaten a Big East team in first round the last two years. Hmmmm....
11) Lute Olson has been in the NCAAs seven times as lower than a 3 seed at Arizona; he is 1-6 in first round those years (he won the national title in the year he won). Wildcats have more distractions than a circus; they're going out early.
10) Gonzaga will play the "lack of respect" card all week, but they got a great draw: Xavier's best player is out with broken ankle, they fired their point guard, and only are here because their conference tournament was in Cincinnati. Gonzaga just drew the 10 seed from a 14-team league that was getting one bid, had GW not lost. Thats a good deal, if you ask me.
9) Maybe Vegas oddsmakers think Gerry McNamara isn't so great; #5 Syracuse, favored by 1.5 points vs #12 Texas A&M, the lowest spread in a 5-12 game in five years.
8) Indiana is in trouble; Robert Vaden hurt his ankle (it looked bad) very late in the Ohio State game and now they're going to Salt Lake City (Mountain West country) against San Diego State, kings of the Mountain West. Killingsworth has issues with conditioning, and in altitude, it'll be worse.
7) Jay Bilas thinks Michigan got hosed; Duke alum Amaker is Michigan's coach. Hey, Jay; Michigan went 2-7 in their last 9 games. You want to make the tournament? Win more games.
6) Last time Cal made the tournament, three years ago, they beat NC State in OT in first round. Well, they're playing the Wolfpack again, and NC State stumbles in on a 4-game slide.
UAB-Kentucky is rematch of Blazers' second round upset in 2004. Our guy Squeaky Johnson visits the city of Brotherly Love. Will be excellent game.
5) Iona Gaels draw LSU, which hasn't won first round game in six years, when they had Stromile Swift; they lost as favorite in last two tourneys. Iona has three senior guards, they shoot 3's like crazy (40% for year) and they're fearless. Question is, do they have any way to stop the powerful Glen Davis?
4) If you had to bet your last $100 on Cincinnati vs Utah St, no points, who would you take? Cincinnati-Bradley? UC beat LSU, they won at Vanderbilt, they won at Syracuse. Ugh.
I am guessing Seton Hall's 83-65 win at NC State got them in.
3) Want an obscure team you'll be scrambling to learn about later this week? Northwestern (LA) State, the Demons, who play two groups of five guys and have their top seven guys back from last year's team. I think they'll beat Iowa.
2) Man, if you're a coach, and you've got your kids in a room watching CBS, and your team gets excluded, what the hell do you say to them? CSTV cameras were at Missouri State, and it was real quiet in that room. For the seniors, it is very sad.
I mean, Missouri State had a 21 RPI, lost at 8-seed Arkansas by four points, and comes from a league with four bids- what would you say to those heartbroken kids? I have no idea.
1) My early Final Four prediction:
UCLA, North Carolina, Boston College and Duke.
I'm still bitter that we can't play the over on Long Beach State in the NIT this week, but I guess I'll get over it.
cinn got screwed coming out of the big east, with the schedule they had, and quality wins, it was syr. that put the pin into their baloon, unfortunate, but shit happens
the head of the Selection Committee for the NCAA tournament is the AD at Virginia. Coincidence? I doubt it.
For real?!?! No kidding? Well, that just stinks! You're dead on about Long Beach being fun to watch! My heart goes out to those hard-working, hard-playing guys!
After what I witnessed in Nashville yesterday, I'm heart-broken over South Carolina getting bumped, too, and I'm a Gator fan!
Spark, you can move this to a March Mad trend post once made...
