Sunday's List of 13: Selection Sunday; a variety of emotions
13) If you're a coach or player on a bubble team, Sunday will be one of the longest days of your life, waiting to see if all the effort of the past year is validated with a tournament bid.
12) Team of the Week: Syracuse- they'll share it with South Carolina if Gamecocks beat Florida Sunday- that would be the third time this year Carolina upset the Gators. Orange had an almost mystical week, kind of like when Randolph Childress led Wake Forest to ACC title in mid-90's.
11) All bubble teams are rooting hard for Florida Sunday.
10) Texas A&M has four wins this year when they trailed by double digits at some point in the game. Worst thing for the Aggies is that they will lose their coach soon; he's bound to move up to a basketball-first school.
9) Watching last 5:00 of tied Wyoming-San Diego State game as I type this; announcer just said hot rumor is that Wyoming coach McClain will be fired if Wyoming loses. Imagine being a ref making the key call in game, knowing that a guy is going to lose his job if you call the play against his team?
8) Joe Dean Jr, working SEC games on the dish, said there are as many as 15 teams he thinks can win the national title.
7) Great thing about college sports: Friday night, Oregon has its point guard suspended by the league, so they turn to little used senior Brandon Lincoln, who had been passed by the Ducks' younger recruits. Lincoln responded with 22 points in the game of his life, his last college game, a double OT loss.
6) This has nothing to do with college hoop, but professional poker player Chris Ferguson is PhD in Computer Science; his father teaches Game Theory at UCLA. Ferguson is skilled at throwing a playing card and cutting a piece of fruit with it.
5) The new format in some of the mid-major conferences has rewarded regular season success, but it doomed Long Beach State, our favorite team, as they lost to Pacific, playing third night in row, while Pacific was playing for second night. The format gives the top two seeds a bye to the semifinals.
4) Nobody asked me, but my three favorite commentators on college hoop this year: 3) Steve Lavin, 2) Jimmy Dykes and
1) CSTV's Pete Gillen, who may be back in coaching in 2007.
3) Championship Week is a tremendous amount of fun; so much action all week, boiling down to Saturday's title games, and then the announcement of brackets Sunday night. It is almost to the point where this week is as much fun as next.
2) Of the last 17 national champions, eight won the tourney in their conference, three lost in finals, six lost in semis; none in the first round. Bad news for Connecticut.
1) No more talk about who should be in, who should be out; it is time to see for real. Our favorite sporting event of year is about to begin. Next time we meet here, we'll be discussing the brackets for the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
