Memphis is playing for #1 seed, which they probably won't get after losing at UAB, but Calipari might have trouble keeping their focus after 105-65 win.

Central Florida won four of last five games; they split pair with Houston this year, upsetting Coogs 66-56 as 13-pt underdog in Houston, then losing 78-71 at home three weeks ago (+3.5). UCF is 3-5 vs spread in last eigth as road dog. Houston has three Ws in last eight conference tourneys; they're 9-2 vs spread in their last 11 games, 7-1 in last eight games a favorite.

          SEC
South Carolina waxed Mississippi State 83-61 Feb 11 (-12)- they lost four of last five games, though, and are 3-5 vs spread as an SEC favorite this year. MSU covered last three games and five of last six (3-2 last five SU); they're 6-7 as SEC dog- they're 3-1 in last four first round games. Neither team has done anything this season to warrant your support in this game.

Kentucky crushed Ole Miss 80-40 at home Feb 22 (-13); UK won seven of last nine first round games, covering all seven wins, by margins of 42,11,10,13,18,9,14 pts. Wildcats are 3-7 as SEC fave this year. Rebels fired their coach, lost last five games and 12 of last 13; they're 3-8 vs spread in last 11 games as dog. Kentucky hasn't been consistent enough to merit laying double digits.

Vandy opened SEC season with optimism and a 74-50 home win vs Auburn (-12), but they finished just 7-9 in SEC, covering one of last five as SEC favorite. Commodores lost as 9-pt favorite to Auburn in this game last year. Tigers covered five of its last six games (2-2 last four SU); they lost seven of eight SEC road tilts, but went 5-3 vs spread. Auburn is 4-3 in first round last 7 yrs.

Georgia lost three in row (by 15,11,17 pts) and six of last seven; they lost 74-57 at home to Arkansas Sunday and have only one conference tourney win last six years. Arkansas won last five in row, to stake their case for at-large bid; they covered seven of last ten tries as favorite, even winning their last two road games, but they are 0-4 SU in this tournament the last four years.

          MWC
Certain amount of pressure on top-seed San Diego State no lock to go to NCAA with early exit here; they beat Colorado St twice during season, but games were 83-75 (-1.5) at Cox, 85-81 (-2) at Fort Collins. Aztecs are 8-4 vs spread as MWC favorite; this is first time in at least decade they're favored in this event, a little odd. Rams are 2-7 vs spread as Mountain West underdog in '06.

UNLV was just 3-4 in last seven games after 7-2 start in league; they lost 47-39 at Pit last week (+2.5) after beating Lobos 67-56 at home Jan 28 (-8). New Mexico won this event last year, after losing in first round previous three years- their win over Rebels was only one in last four games. UNLV is 7-1 in last eight first round games, winning last five by 5,3,16,2,7 points.

Air Force has zero wins in this event, and they were favored last two years; they split pair of games with Wyoming this yr, with a 55-50 loss at Laramie Jan 11 (+4.5), then winning 62-61 at home on Feb 11 (-11), so Cowboys played them tough, but lost last six in a row overall (0-4 vs spread in last four) by 1,2,6,2,19,9 points. Falcons won their last six games (3-1-1 vs spread in last five).

Home team won both Utah-BYU games, but Cougars were hot down stretch, winning last six games, 10 of last 11, covering last and nine of 10. Utah lost four of last five games after upsetting San Diego State; they lost at TCU last week, looking dismal in process. Utes have played well in this event but they had some better players in past. BYU is 5-2 last seven first round games. We have a selection on this game down below.

          Pac-10
Hassan Adams took 169 more shots than any Arizona player, played three minutes a game more than anyone, but he is out of tournament after DUI charge; how does Arizona react? U of A beat Stanford twice this year, 90-81 at home in OT Jan 19 (-11), then more decisive 76-72 win at Maples Feb 19 (+3.5). Stanford is 2-3 in last five games, scoring 52 ppg in last four- both their last two wins were by a basket, over non-NCAA teams.

Oregon State is 6-4 as Pac-10 road underdog; they were down in second half yesterday by 15, came back to win, they have three starters out, with Cuic rolling ankle early yesterday. Beavers lost 63-54 at home to UCLA Jan 28 (+3.5), then again in Westwood Feb 23 (+15). Pac-10 tourney hasn't been UCLA's event, winning only one game in four years; they lost 79-72 to Oregon State in this game last season (-5).

Cal is not lock for NCAAs yet; win here should do trick, vs USC team they beat twice, 62-58 at Sports Arena (+1), 71-60 at home five nights ago (-8). Trojans lost six of last eight games, are 7-5 vs spread as Pac-10 dog. Cal lost in first round of this event the last two years, after winning previous two; they're 2-3 last five overall, 6-3 on road, 7-5 vs spread as Pac-10 favorite.

Washington is hottest team in Pac-10, winning eight games in a row, covering last six; they scored 95,91 points in winning first round games in this event last two years. Oregon lost twice to Huskies this season, 78-59 in Seattle on Jan 21 (+12), then 75-72 at home Feb 16 (+2.5). Ducks are 5-3 as Pac-10 road dog; they'll go up and down with Washington. Should be fun game.

          WAC
Louisiana Tech won at Hawai'i last week; they're 5-3 on road in WAC, but they haven't been good tourney team, winning only one game last five years (0-6-1 vs spread in last seven tourney games). Tech beat Boise State twice this year, 75-72 at Boise on Jan 5 (+2.5) then 81-71 at home Feb 8 (-7.5). Boise lost five of its last six, beating 1-13 Idaho in OT; they covered four of last five as dog, and upset Nevada in first round of this event last year.

Utah State struggled to beat San Jose 61-58 on Senior Night in last game Saturday (-16.5); they beat Spartans 67-56 at San Jose in WAC opener Jan 5 (-9.5). Aggies in first WAC tourney; they were 13-2 in last 15 Big West tourney games. USU shoots it well but has been struggling of late, winning five of last six games, but covering only two of their last nine, all as favorite.

Idaho won only one WAC game, but they tried hard whole year, going 3-2 vs spread in last five, and in one of games they didn't cover, they led at New Mexico State by 10 at half. Nevada isn't going to take Vandals lightly after losing this game to Boise St last year; only one WAC team is going dancing, so Wolf Pack needs good weekend- they're 5-2-1 as a home favorite.

Home side won both New Mexico State-Hawai'i games this year, with Aggies winning 87-84 (+1), losing 61-56 (+7), in game that was played a week ago. Warriors won first round WAC game in five of last six years; they're 4-1 in last five games, and 3-1 in last four on mainland. Aggies won four of last five games, losing the Hawai'i game. One of the better games on today's card.

          Big West
Long Beach State won five in a row, scoring 93.4 ppg. last year, they finished 7-1 in regular season, then lost to UCSB in the first round of this event. Underachieving Fullerton won four of last six games, not sure it has very good chemistry, but they have a lot of talent.49ers swept Fullerton this year, winning 97-96 in OT at Fullerton Jan 19 (+8), then winning at home 88-79 (-3.5) Feb 15

Santa Barbara won eight of their last ten games, crushing UCR last night; they pounded Cal Poly 64-37 at Thunderdome Feb 15 (-8.5) after losing 74-62 at Cal Poly Jan 21 (-5). Mustangs are 7-7 Big West team, but were dog in 13 of 14 games; they lost three in row on road; underdog is 11-3 vs spread in their conference games this season. Big West hard to figure this season.

                Thursday's List of 13: 13 things I learned today........
                13) I learned that, occasionally, lawyers don't always screw things up; good work by the NFL getting labor thing done.

                12) When Andy Kennedy looks back on his 74-73 loss today, he'll feel worse about last 0:10 of first half than last 0:10 of the game. McNamara hit a three at end of both halves.

                11) Of the four teams in Atlantic 14 who got a first round bye, three of them lost their only meeting vs team they are playing Thursday. Does that mean Thursday is an upset day?

                10) With 4:45 left in first half Wednesday: Pitt 33, Louisville 7.

                9) Is Alex Rodriguez baseball's version of Steph Marbury?

                8) Steve Nash sits behind Canada's dugout, and they win 8-6; the Canadian hockey team should have brought him to Italy.

                7) With the salary cap going up $7.5M, can the Rams bring Isaac Bruce back? He should retire a Ram.

                6) Quietly, the Raiders cut Kerry Collins over weekend; does this mean they bring him back? If not, who the hell is their QB going to be this season? Daryle Lamonica? David Humm?

                5) This is the first season, apparently, the Raiders will market their own season tickets; previously, the city of Oakland was, and they didn't do a real good job. Look for Raiders to do lot better at box office this fall. Of course, they still need a QB.

                4) Larry Krystkowiak has gotten Montana in NCAAs in first two seasons as head coach; he is also only Griz player whose number has been retired.

                3) Let's put it this way: there were more people at high school championship game here in Albany Tuesday, than at the two Pac-10 tournament games at Staples Wednesday.

                2) The Hornets played in New Orleans last night, first game in Big Easy since the hurricane. Good for them.

                1) This just in: Paul Tagliabue is a better commissioner than Bud Selig, as if you didn't already know that.
