CHICAGO (Reuters) - Quarterback Daunte Culpepper has asked the Minnesota Vikings to trade him or release him from his contract.

"If a trade does not happen, then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible," Culpepper wrote in an e-mail to reporters.

Culpepper's relationship with the Vikings has been strained since October when he tore ligaments in his right knee, ending his season.

An e-mail this week from the team sparked his request for a trade, he told the sports network ESPN.

"Two days ago I got an e-mail from management that confirmed for me that they did not see me as the player or person that I see myself," Culpepper told the network. "I was shocked. It pushed me to this point (seeking a trade)."

Culpepper said in his e-mail he had asked permission to contact interested teams about a possible trade.

"The Vikings have denied my request," he wrote.

The Vikings declined to discuss Culpepper's e-mail.

The team is scheduled to pay Culpepper a $6 million roster bonus this month, The Star-Tribune of Minneapolis reported.

But the 29-year-old Culpepper, who has been with the Vikings for seven seasons, said he would rather leave the team.

"I appreciate that the owner, Mr. (Zygi) Wilf, is willing to pay my March bonus," Culpepper wrote in the e-mail to reporters.

"However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways."
