Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up the sports weekend......
                  13) Iona-Manhattan game Sunday was weird; almost a brawl in first 90 seconds, both teams were in bonus with 14:19 left in the half. 11 players had 2+ fouls in the first half.

                  12) Iona is 11-2 on road, the most road wins of any team, but it didn't look it at Manhattan, when they had 68-60 lead and the ball with 5:00 left, but fell apart down stretch, blowing the double-bye regular season champ gets in MAAC tournament that starts this weekend here in America's 2nd-favorite city.

                  11) Iona has three seniors who went to high school together at All Hallows HS in New York City, little unusual.

                  10) Maryland is 3-6 since they lost McCray for yr to academic issues; they're 2-6 in their last eight games, and very much on the NCAA bubble.

                  9) If you're a Pac-10 team, the Washington trip must be tough in Seattle, the Huskies press and run a lot, so it is fast-paced game against good athletes, then you go to Pullman, and it is a slow, mechanical game, vs far-lesser athletes. Different kind of games, 180-degrees different. All in two days.

                  8) If you were hiring a new coach, why would you want a guy who runs the Princeton offense? Unless you're at school that is disadvantaged, like Northwestern or a service academy, it seems stupid to run a slowish offense.

                  7) Gilbert Arenas scored 33 pts in first half against Knicks on Saturday, not exactly a good sign for rebuilt New Yorkers.

                  6) Interesting article on espn.com about Brett Elliott, a former U of Utah QB who broke his wrist, got beat out by Alex Smith and transferred to D-III Linfield College, where he threw 110 TD passes the last two years. Elliott wasn't invited to the NFL Combine, despite his gaudy numbers. Will be interesting to see where he surfaces: NFL, CFL, Arena League...............

                  5) According to Bracketology on espn.com, the four #1 seeds would be Memphis, Duke, UConn, Villanova. Not sure if the Texas win and Villanova loss will change that. Two weeks to go until we see the brackets for real, Then the fun begins.

                  4) Finally got to see Knight School on ESPN; it isn't horrible, you can learn some basketball stuff; the commercials didn't do it justice. I have no idea why he agreed to do it; guessing it was his son's idea, but it made for interesting viewing.

                  3) At 7-7 in Big 11, Michigan State is a disappointment

                  2) I think the NFL Combine can often mislead teams to select guys who do well in workouts, as opposed to guys who play well in games. To me, game performance is more important.

In other words, Jay Cutler isn't better than Vince Young.

                  1) I object when people separate coaching and recruiting, as in, "He can recruit, but he can't coach." Recruiting is a part of coaching; recruit great players, and coaching is less stressful. Great players who make plays in short-clock situations make coaches look like geniuses.
