  • Stuart Scott's Comments in The Mag

I am not sure why I am so bothered by his comments but in case you did not see them in ESPN The Mag, I would be interested to hear what you all have to say...

Question: Stu, you recently said on SC that fans shouldn't boo. If I have a bad day at work, my boss let's me know about it. If I pay to see a game and the players don't perform, why shouldn't I let them know about it?

Stu: Yes, you have a bad day, your boss tells you- just like Larry Brown let's Stephon Marbury know when he's playing poorly. But what if your company's customers screamed obscenities at you too? Booing is classless. Not a single athelte out there isn't trying. A ticket gives you the right to be there, not to tyell ugly things at people. That's my view.

Three Jacks take- I agree with his point on yelling obscenities, that is absurd to do. But to say 'booing is classless' is a load of crap. I, as a paying cutomer, am paying atheletes salaries and if someone is not producing, why can't I let them know? And for him to compare it to LB letting Starbury know...give me a break. LB doesn't pay Stephon's salary...I do! And I almost thow up with his comment that 'not a single athlete out there isn't trying'...has he seen Jerome James on the Knicks? The guy shows up to camp 30 lbs over weight and that is trying? He calls out of a game last week having played a WHOPPING 7 straight minutes! That's trying?!?!?! How about Mark Blount after he signs a huge comtract with he Celtics? We could go on and on with clowns who played hard for one season, or less, in a contract year and turned it into millions. Is it me or what world does SS live in? And, just for the record, I have been to probaby well over 200 sporting events as I have been very lucky in my life and NOT ONCE have I ever booed because, while I believe I have the right to, I do not believe it accomplishes anything. And that includes MANY bad NY teams....

Thoughts from anyone who bothered to read this?

Well lets be clear on one thing, YOU are not paying their salaries. You are paying to watch them earn their salaries. as far as SS goes, I don't really like him and his one eye. he used to be alright but now he trys SO HARD to be ghetto.

I always get a laugh when people say that they are paying an athlete's salary. That works both ways, you know. Whatever your particular job may be, there are consumers somewhere that are directly responsible for you having a job. Yet, if one of those consumers "went off" on you, I'm quite sure yu wouldn't be sitting around saying, "well they have that right because if it wasn't for them, then I wouldn't have a job."

The fans indirectly pay their salaries, to say we don't is absurd. If we didn't go to games, watch them on tv, or buy the merchandise....they wouldn't have the contracts they do. As for booing...I think it's alright, obscenities..no. I take my children to games from the AAA level to majors in all sports...I don't want another fan yelling obsenities around my son.

Are they trying, not always...should they report to camp in shape, should they play their hardest in a non contract year...of course they should, but not all do. Look at Shaq with the Lakers vs his first year with the heat (and I like Shaq), but he came into camp 50+lbs out of shape every year.

Stu says that "Not a single athelte out there isn't trying." I wonder if he remembers his fellow UNC boy Vince Carter and the act he pulled up in Toronto. That would classify not trying. BOOYEAH

Also, I don't have a problem with fans booing at all. Yelling obscentities is wrong, but just booing is fine IMO

I hate to tell you but you are about as wrong as I think Stu is...as a GM of a hotel and having been in hospitality for 16 yrs, I fully understand that the irate guest who is eating me for dinner when he is chewing me out pays my salary and the importance of making sure that we do everything we can to make their experience a pleasant one, no matter how challenging they may be too please. Having worked at The Plaza hotel for 10 yrs and dealing with some of the most discernable travellers in the world, getting chewed out was just about a daily occurance. So while others in my industry, and in customer service, may not have my mind set, I would prefer you don't lump me in with everyone else and make generalizations.

Okay, where does the $1250 I pay for season tickets to the NY Giants go? Are you telling me that a portion of what I pay does not go to pay the players? If it doesn't, I'd like to know what I am paying for and then where do the owner's get the money to pay the players? It isn't all TV revenue and concessions....

As much as I love the Red Sox, does not a fan like myself have a right to boo for example Manny Ramirez if he hits an easy grounder to the pitcher or second base and decides it is not worth running out, if he decides he doesn't want to dirty up his uniform by sliding into second base to try to break up a double play or by not sliding into homeplate on what could be a close play?

Savage, couldn't agree more.... I guess the line 'booing is classless' is really what ruffled my feathers. Namecalling- yes, that is classles sand gutless. But booing? And to say everyone is trying? We will never know the answer to that but there is no way that every athlete gives 100%, 100% of the time.

I can understand a little bit say in the NFL if on the last weekend of the season a team has clinched a playoff spot, and a starting player(even thought he may be in the game for only a short time) is extra cautious in the way he plays in order to avoid injury.
Above scenario would not apply as much in baseball because of the nature of the game.
For the most part though, players in all sports should try to give 100% especially in view of what they are paid.
