I am not sure why I am so bothered by his comments but in case you did not see them in ESPN The Mag, I would be interested to hear what you all have to say...
Question: Stu, you recently said on SC that fans shouldn't boo. If I have a bad day at work, my boss let's me know about it. If I pay to see a game and the players don't perform, why shouldn't I let them know about it?
Stu: Yes, you have a bad day, your boss tells you- just like Larry Brown let's Stephon Marbury know when he's playing poorly. But what if your company's customers screamed obscenities at you too? Booing is classless. Not a single athelte out there isn't trying. A ticket gives you the right to be there, not to tyell ugly things at people. That's my view.
Three Jacks take- I agree with his point on yelling obscenities, that is absurd to do. But to say 'booing is classless' is a load of crap. I, as a paying cutomer, am paying atheletes salaries and if someone is not producing, why can't I let them know? And for him to compare it to LB letting Starbury know...give me a break. LB doesn't pay Stephon's salary...I do! And I almost thow up with his comment that 'not a single athlete out there isn't trying'...has he seen Jerome James on the Knicks? The guy shows up to camp 30 lbs over weight and that is trying? He calls out of a game last week having played a WHOPPING 7 straight minutes! That's trying?!?!?! How about Mark Blount after he signs a huge comtract with he Celtics? We could go on and on with clowns who played hard for one season, or less, in a contract year and turned it into millions. Is it me or what world does SS live in? And, just for the record, I have been to probaby well over 200 sporting events as I have been very lucky in my life and NOT ONCE have I ever booed because, while I believe I have the right to, I do not believe it accomplishes anything. And that includes MANY bad NY teams....
Thoughts from anyone who bothered to read this?
