Jacobson looks to break out as Northern Iowa seeks sweep of Wichita State

Ben Jacobson is having trouble getting untracked as the marked man for No. 25 Northern Iowa.

Jacobson seeks to break out of his scoring slump when the Panthers host Wichita State on Tuesday with a share of the Missouri Valley Conference lead on the line.

Jacobson, the conference preseason player of the year, is averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game, down from his 17.9 average last season.

After shooting nearly 45 percent in non-conference play, Jacobson has had difficulty dealing with increased attention from MVC defenses, connecting at just 35 percent from the field.

The senior shooting guard is connecting on just under 32 percent of his shots over the last four games.

Fortunately for Northern Iowa (20-4, 10-3), junior forward Grant Stout has helped pick up the slack. Stout is shooting 56.5 percent while averaging 14.0 points in conference play.

Northern Iowa, Wichita State (19-5, 10-3) and Creighton are in a three-way tie for the MVC lead. However, Creighton is 3-0 against the other two teams.

The Panthers are trying to sweep the season series from the Shockers for the first time since 1999-2000. They won the first meeting on Jan. 5 in Wichita by a 75-61 score.

Jacobson had one of his better conference games with 21 points and Stout had 22 and 10 rebounds for Northern Iowa, which made its final 10 shots and shot 65 percent in the second half.

The Panthers have won four of their last five meetings with the Shockers.

Stout notched his team-high ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds as Northern Iowa improved to 10-1 at home with an 83-56 win over Indiana State on Saturday. Jacobson took just four shots and finished with eight points.

``Our main focus was to establish an inside game,'' Stout said. ``They are a young team inside and we had to attack them and get them in some early foul trouble.''

Wichita State maintained a share of the conference lead with a 71-63 double-overtime win Saturday over Southern Illinois. Paul Miller scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Shockers.

The Shockers survived after allowing the Salukis' Jamaal Tatum to sink a tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

``Obviously I'm thrilled with our team and the way we played,'' Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon said. ``I was really proud of our group. Paul Miller was outstanding.''

Miller was a non-factor in the first meeting with Northern Iowa, matching a season low with seven points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Wichita State, which is 0-2 against ranked teams this season, also is seeking to record its third straight 20-win season.

Two Players Kicked Off Wichita State Jan 25, 2006.
Not much of a loss here. Shockers are 8-1 since their loss to N. Iowa. (they were tied at 42 and then N. Iowa went on a 20-6 run.) I have these teams about even- add a couple of points to N. Iowa for home advantage. Shockers feeling more confidence after their OT win over So. Illinois.

Concerning the two players:
Junior reserve Jared Young and walk-on Gabe Barnes have been kicked off the Wichita State basketball team for violating team rules, coach Mark Turgeon announced Monday. Young and Barnes had been suspended before Sunday's win over Missouri State. Turgeon said Monday the players had been suspended for different reasons. The suspension was the second for Young, who was pulled from two games earlier this season after a disagreement with Turgeon about playing time. Young, a transfer from Pratt Community College, has played in 16 games this season, starting one. He has averaged 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds. Barnes has played in four games this season, averaging 1.0 points and 0.3 rebounds

Northern Iowa senior guard Erik Crawford will miss at least a month while recovering from a broken bone in his right foot. Crawford hurt his foot in Northern Iowa's 55-52 loss to Creighton Wednesday. He averages 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as one of the Panthers' most versatile players. Although he's not an exceptional shooter, Crawford helps Northern Iowa stretch the court. Not a team to use a deep rotation, the Panthers are down to only five players who average more than 10 minutes per game. [1/13/06]-----He will be out till mid feb

5-1-1 last 7. Thanx CRS - You have certainly helped to bring the info highway here yourself. Hey- if we are to gamble - then lets learn in the process- I see much more of this on other sites than I do on this site- I also appreciate the education as well. I have always been one to state my position and gather info good or bad to the cause. I hate making the wrong play as anyone does and it surely happens. (Last nights game with St. Marys/Gonzaga was easy and I still blew it with keying on the over.)

The trends favor both teams tonight but does give the Under a larger edge as shown. Again look at the numbers posted with the trends to get a better feel for the half time score. These two teams should come out battling defensively. I don't believe the Panthers of N. Iowa can go on a tear again in this game in the second half. One major reason is their depth of bench is not that good. With their fast guard out- the Panthers will not be able to stretch the court as much.
This insures more of a half court game of positioning instead of easy transitions.
