  • Kobe MVP?

Sorry Chauncey Billups, Elton Brand, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki – you're no longer in the hunt for the NBA's Most Valuable Player award. Kobe Bryant locked up the award Sunday night with his stunning 81-point barrage in the Los Angeles Lakers' come-from-behind victory over Toronto.

Think about that: 81 points! That's right, eighty-one. The second most points ever scored in a game in league history, behind only Wilt Chamberlain's record of 100. It was more than Michael Jordan ever scored and more than Oscar Robertson or Kareem Abdul-Jabaar ever had. It was as many or more than the Houston Rockets have scored 12 times this season.

Bryant's performance – especially since it rallied the Lakers from a second-half, 18-point deficit – ranks as the greatest show I have ever seen in the NBA. And I was in Cleveland back in 1990 with the Cavaliers when Jordan scored his career-high of 69. (I had two points.) I never thought I'd see anyone top that. But Kobe did.

The scary thing is that we all should have seen this coming. Since Dec. 20, Kobe is averaging 43.4 points per game. In his 62-point outing against Dallas, Bryant didn't even play in the fourth quarter. How much would he have scored had the game been close? On Thursday in Sacramento, he had an off night – and still scored 51.

His point totals have been so ridiculous that his 37-point effort in Phoenix on Friday was barely noticed. For almost anyone else, 37 would be a career night. For Kobe? It's a subpar game.

The question now is how high the bar should be raised. Is 90 points a possibility? Think about how preposterous that sounds, yet Kobe has actually made it a valid question. What if the Lakers play the Suns – who scored 149 points Sunday night and still lost – and Bryant gets hot? Then what? Could he score 100?

The man is virtually unguardable. His shooting range goes way beyond the three-point line, and his ball-handling ability allows him to get to any spot on the floor. His strength and fearlessness puts him at the free-throw line time and again, and his steely nature at the end of games makes him lethal in the clutch. He is a basketball machine.

What this all means is that Bryant has to win the NBA's MVP award. Brand was the early-season favorite after his fast start, and Nash has been mentioned as a repeat winner for leading the Suns to first place in the Pacific Division. Nowitzki also deserves consideration for his play and for the success of the Mavericks. But Kobe has elevated his game to an entirely different level – one that has rarely been seen in the history of the NBA.

He is far and away the best player in the league, and he deserves to be honored. After the show he put on Sunday, can anyone argue that he's not the MVP?
I would NEVER vote for Kobe as the MVP.

I know that the Lakers would be a very bad team with Kobe. However, is the leagues MVP the star of a mediocre team? IMO no!

The above article states "Since Dec. 20, Kobe is averaging 43.4 points per game" during that stretch the Lakers are 9-8. The Lakers are in danger of not making the playoffs. They are 1 1/2 games from dropping out of the playoffs.

Exactly. You take him off that team and they are the worst team in the league. He has a team of garbage contending for the playoffs. Who else would you vote for? Nash has Marion and vice versa. Wade has Shaq and vice versa. Duncan's numbers aren't that good and either are any of the Pistons. While KG's team isn't good at all.

Tony and weazel079, I agree. The Lakers would be very bad without Kobe.

If I had a vote it's a tough call. There's no clear cut winner this year. I'd also have a tough time voting for any player that plays for a mediocre team.

80 points is impressive but it also points to how bad his team and teamate are.

Exactly. That is what makes him "MOST" valuable!

I am not ready to make Kobe the run away MVP. I personally think Steve Nash is having a better year this season than last year MVP season.

My main point though is the hating on Kobe in the media is ridiculous. Kobe scored 81 points on 46 shots, that effiency is remarkable. He is being labeled as a ball hog. Doesnt the definition of a ball hog have something to do with better options than Kobe shooting the ball virtually everythime down the floor? Now who do you want to shoot the ball for the Lakers? LOdom is a roller coaster and CMihm and KBrown are getting a majority of minutes on the front line!!!

If MJordan scored 81 points he would be praised beyond all belief. IMO what Kobe did on Sunday night was one of the greatest individual performances in the history of sport!!!

That's interesting you feel that way. I feel the media game too many accolades to Kobe. Most of what I've seen and read has been very positive of Kobe's accomplishment.

As a devil's advocate, then should ARod not been MVP cuz of who surrounded him?

Kobe may be the best or close to the best, but IMHO, he's NO MVP. Scoring lots of points does nothing or proves nothing other than that. Can a player make his teammates better, team better, take them to playoffs, win games??

I so disagree w/ anyone who says he's an MVP.

Valuable for his team, yes. For the league, NO.

This is what Kobe always wanted. He has a nightly stage to throw up as many shots as he wants and win an NBA scoring title will vying for an 8th seed instead of playing 2nd fiddle to Shaq and competing for the NBA Championship every season.

I wouldn't vote for him for MVP.

                    Great post! I agree 1000%

The objective in sports is to win. It's not about personal stats. When I played I could care less about my personal achievements. I wanted to win.

You may be correct. I have certainly heard positive accolades for Kobe's accomplishments over the weekend.

I have for a long time thought he was the most talented player in the NBA but always seems to get bashed for his off the court issues or his continuous feud with Shaq or the fact he isnt the greatest teammate in the world.

FRANK!!! If you havent heard or read Vince Carter's statements about Kobe on Sunday night, you have to spend a second to read them!!! I know you will have a smile from ear 2 ear. I actually heard them on ESPN.radio so I dont know where to tell you to locate them but I know you would enjoy the read!!!

Exactly why he doesn't get credit. People relate his personal life to what he does on the court. The award is for best play on the court.
