Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a rainy day
              13) When NFL teams are filling these coaching vacancies, they want to know whol your staff is going to be, if you get the job. The staff does most of the coaching and grunt work that wins games, so coming into an interview with names is a necessity.

              12) Sean Payton is the new Cajun term for "works cheap".

              11) Carson Palmer had to move temporarily, because the house he lived in had too many stairs for him to negotiate with his surgically-repaired knee.

              10) Franchise worth of the NFL's Final Four: Denver $907 million/Carolina $878 million/Seattle $823 million/Pittsburgh $820 million.

              9) Steelers' worth is 16th-ranked in NFL, which puts them right in middle of league.

              8) UConn, St John's are renewing an old rivalry on recruiting trail, but until Red Storm win a couple of recruiting battles, on-court meetings will continue to tilt towards the Huskies. Things are getting heated, though.

              7) Jimmy Rollins will start the baseball season with a 36-game hitting streak, longest in big leagues since Paul Molitor hit in 39 straight in 1987.

              6) Teddy Roosevelt, at age 42, was our youngest President.

              5) Not to be mean, but there are two leagues in college hoop, the MEAC and SWAC, where the first place teams both have 7-10 overall records, despite having 5-0 or 5-1 league records. One of these league champs is almost a definite for the play-in game in Dayton March 14; both tourney champs might get there, but probably not.

              4) NHL will disappear for couple weeks during the Winter Olympics, when the stars go over to Italy for that tournament. League figures anything that grows the sport, after they tried their best to wreck it, is a good thing.

              3) The 20th season of Arena Football gets underway next week; 18 teams will tee it up every Sunday, with Arena Bowl XX in Las Vegas in June. Our coverage of the AFL will start with writeups on every game from Week 2 on, starting Feb. 1.

              2) When Kansas State won at Kansas Saturday, it ended a 30-game losing streak vs their instate rivals.

              1) Wednesday March 1, Rockies-White Sox, the first spring training game between two major league teams. Just thought you'd like to know.
