  • As a Fan do you ever Hedge against your favorite team?

OK this is all fairly new to me being stuck in Seattle and being and Seattle sports fan, but this question is for guys who are Fans of historically good teams.

Do you ever play against your favorite team in the playoffs when they are large favorites?

I am considering playing the Redskins +9 for a small bet. Here is my reasoning (no stats or trends). I want nothing more than to see the Seahawks in the Superbowl. I would be crushed if they found a way to lose this weekend. If I play the 'skins plus the points the money I win will lessen the blow if the 'Hawks choke. I have 9 points to try and catch a middle (seahawks win and not cover). If the 'Hawks win I'll just say I paid "x" amount to see them host the NFC championship game. Does this make sense, or should I just lay off this game and enjoy it?

Does anyone see this game being a Seahawk's rout of the Redskins?

Thanks guys and Hopefully the 'Hawks will be motor city bound!

Yes. Those times, my heart would be with my team while the money is on the opponent.

If its just a casual bet than really its no big deal

If im making a wager to win money I would bet against my own mother if I thought it was the right thing to do

Yea, if your wagering hard earned money and it KILLS you to even lose a penny on a wager...then why wouldn't you just make the smart wager to win money vs a bit to satisfy a notion? For no reason can I justify that kind of logic...

Bet what makes you money (hopefully) and root for the COVER and hopefully that satifies both needs of winning and your team wins...if not, hopefully one of those happens and worse case is both lose...

As for Hawks covering DD...it's early, but my numbers have them doing just that...a bit more to decipher but the rest, home field, the revenge and the better team point to clear DD win, IMHO.

GL w/ whichever direction you choose...

I would stay away and just enjoy the game. I think the Hawks finally have good team this year, but the playoffs are whole different story and historically the Hawks don't fair to well in the post season.

              Hey Buddy !!!

My best advice is always that if you are thinking of becoming a handicapper / bettor , never fall in love with any player or any team. Treat athletes as if they are strangers , because that's exactly what they are.

Stay objective , cold hearted and unemotional.

I know it takes a lot of the fun out of sports , but try to decide which of the 2 makes you happier. It's very very difficult to be a successful bettor and a fan at the same time.

I agree with coverboy. Don't mix loyalty to a team with your $$$$

In the 80s I would never bet on the Giants. Because if they lost it was a double whammy. I would be against them. It was win / win.

Now I won't hesitate to bet on or against the Giants.

Pimp, I disagree. Casual bets are big deals. About a year ago for the action I often made 'casual' best. I seemed to lose a lot more of them than I won. Since I've stopped making 'casual' bets my bankroll has done much better.

My advice DON'T MAKE CASAUL BETS.

Although, I seem to be in the norm around here. I enjoy watching games without money bet. I can sit back and enjoy the game. I don't like watching the games I bet. I'm more emotionally involved. I don't enjoy the game as much.

Look at it this way. If you will be devastated by a Seahawks upset, bet the Redskins and you'll at least have $ to ease your misery. If the Seahawks win, consider the wager the purchase price for your joy. If Seattle wins and doesn't cover, you win on both fronts.

I would NEVER do this myself. None of this has anything to do with how someone should gamble. If you are looking at this from a bottom line perspective and your emotions are clouding how you handicap the game, don't bet it at all.

I think Seattle beats Redskins pretty easily. Washington was lucky to beat Tampa. Washington had no offense. Their magic ride ends on Saturday.

Thanks for the insight guys. As a relative newb to betting I'm going to try and remove myself emotionally as much as possible. Most likely, I'll just pass the game and root on the Hawks. I know having a favorite team makes me a flawed player, but I'll learn to adjust with time.

I understand Frank's point on enjoying a game where you have nothing at stake. Last week I watched the Orange bowl with nothing on the line and have not enjoyed a college football game that much in some time. On the other hand, I had USC teased with the other and that game could not have been more frustrating. That game should have been a pure joy to watch, but Vince Young could not be stopped in the 4th quarter so instead of saying, "wow this kid is special." I was left saying, "someone tackle that fvck! Damn it, Carrol spy that kid!" LOL!
