Carolina @ New York- Eli Manning makes his playoff debut vs another Lousiana QB, Delhomme, who has played in Super Bowl. Panthers were just 4-3 down stretch after 7-2 start, but they won six of their last seven road games, and ran ball for 229 yards vs pouting Falcons last week Giant LBs have severe injury issues, but this being playoff games, hard to imagine all able bodies won't play. First home game in three weeks for Giants, who got extra home game during season; they're 8-1 at home, losing turnover-filled fray vs Minnesota, that saw Vikings, return punt, kick and INT for TD in same game, for first time in league history. Coach Fox got Carolina job through work he did with Giants as DC, sxo he knows the ins and outs of winter ball in Swamp, and might have some knowledge that net Carolina a minor upset.

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati- Home side had better record; teams split pair of games during season, with Steelers winning 27-13 on this field in Week 7, as Pitt outrushed Cincy 221-91- they were just 9-14/83 yards passing in first meeting. Roethlisberger has bad thumb and has trouble throwing long passes; Bengals will try to stack the run; until last week, they had held last four opponents under 100 rushing yards, but Chiefs got 202 against them. In second meeting, in Week 13, Bengals were +4 in turnovers, winning 38-31. Steelers outgained Cincy 474-324 in second meeting, but were done in by Bengals scoring three TD's on drives that started in Pitt territory. Bengals lost last two games, but neither mattered; Palmer came out in second quarter last week. Average field position was huge in both games, as Steelers had 16-yard edge in first game, Bengals 12-yard edge in second. Experience edge Steelers, enthusiasm edge Bengals; should be terrific game.

St Joe's won its last six games vs Temple, winning last year's by scores of 69-57/63-56. Hawks lost four of last five games since they went to Kansas and won, with a 62-58 home loss to Xavier in their A-14 opener. Temple lost its league opener 72-60 to GW at home; they've lost three of their last four games. Both teams play tough non-conference schedules, so both will improve.

West Virginia went to Villanova last year and lost 84-46, as 4-pt underdog; then, in Big East tourney, they upset Wildcats 78-76 as 6-point dog on neutral court. Unbeaten Villanova went down to Louisville and handed Pitino a loss in his return to Big East play, 76-67. WVa was 3-3 in November, but won six in row since.

First Big East road game for South Florida; they've lost five of last six games, including 57-53 home loss to West Virginia in its first Big East game. Their only road game thus far was 69-64 loss in 2OT at Florida State. Syracuse, which never seems to go on road, has been off for nine days; they're 11-2, losing at home to Bucknell (74-69) and in NYC to Florida (75-70).

Sunday's List of 13: nobody asked me, but..........
                    13) You can win some money by knowing that Steve Novak of Marquette holds record for most points scored in his first Big East game, when he had 41 points vs UConn. He broke Allen Iverson's record.

                    12) First Big Monday of year has Cincinnati-UConn at 7; fine coaching job being done by Bearcat interim coach Kennedy, who has Cincinnati at 13-2.

                    11) Midnight game on Big Monday will now be either a WAC game or WCC, with Gonzaga featured the first two weeks, the way UNLV was in the early days of Big Monday.

                    10) Notre Dame-DePaul is a Big East game? Why?

                    9) Athletic directors and college presidents need to buy some atlases; this weekend, New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech made road trip, playing Boise State and Idaho Thurs/Sat.

How is it possible that all those teams are in the WAC? Look at a map; Louisiana, New Mexico and Idaho are far apart.

                    8) Cal-Santa Barbara beat Long Beach at home Saturday, as they usually do, but they have to go to Long Beach later this season, and they've lost last three visits there, all by 1 point.

                    7) When you look quick at news stories, a little punctuation goes a long way. If it says Parcells re-signs, which it did, then he is back in Dallas for few more years. When I first looked at the story, thought it said resigns, which means he would have quit. It helps to actually concentrate and pay attention.

                    6) When Suns scored 47 points in first quarter Friday vs Heat that was more points than nine of the other 23 teams had at the half Friday night.

                    5) When I watch a hoop game from Rutgers on TV, it seems like it would be an awesome home court, if Knights ever get real good. As the state university of New Jersey, there's no reason why they shouldn't be real good.

                    4) Listen to Big East games on TV, and you'd think you were watching an NBA game, the way announcers gush about the league. Guys in other leagues don't do that as much.

                    3) Mark Brunell played college football at Washington, so he gets to take his anemic offense home next week, when Skins travel to Seattle for a Saturday game. Washington gained 134 total yards at Tampa, scoring a defensive TD; their offensive TD came on a 5-yard drive after an interception.

                    2) Think people in Kentucky are happy right now? Wildcats enter SEC play after getting housed at Kansas, 73-46. ESPN studio guys joked that it was lucky for them that they hosted Vanderbilt in first SEC game, since they always beat Vandy, but Commodores are a better team than Kentucky this year.

                    1) Watching Glen Davis play for LSU reminded me of when I saw the big fella play for first time, at 17/under showcase in Orlando in summer of '03. His team was in the finals; at half, his team had 29 points, and he had 27 of them. When he got tired in second half, his team lost, but he made impression on anyone who saw that game, and he is terrific player now.
