    NFL Wild Card playoff analysis
Washington @ Tampa Bay- Bucs won controversial 36-35 game over Redskins on this field in Week 10, when Gruden went for game-winning 2-point conversion in last 2:00 and Alstott made it, although replays showed ball never broke plane. Tampa led that game 21-13 at half, averaged over 18 yards per completion, but were outrushed 185-61. Tampa won six of its last eight games, as young Simms managed game well (only seven giveaways in last eight games). Redskins won, covered their last five games, scoring 35-35-31 points in their last three, all in highly-charged divisional rivalry games. Bucs are 9-0 when they score more than 14 points. Skins held six foes to 14 or less, including three of last five. Both coaches have won Super Bowls; Washington QB rates edge, on experience.

Jacksonville @ New England- I know, Brady has never lost playoff game, or in OT. Belichick thinks MENSA is for inferior minds, and the Jaguars have no chance here. Oh, wait, Jacksonville had a better record (12-4) than Patriots; they won and covered their last five games, scoring 78 points in last two weeks, plus they get their starting QB back here. Jaguars are 4-0 vs spread this season as dog; they played Colts twice this year, lost 10-3 in Week 2, 26-18 in Week 14, allowing Indy three TD's on 20 drives, so my point is, this is a real team getting zero respect. They can win this game. Naysayers claim that Jags played lame schedule down stretch; well here's who Patriots made their playoff push against: Jets (twice), Bills, Bucs (working on short week, and traveling for third week in row), and the Saints. I think the Jaguars are going to advance.

Carolina @ New York- Eli Manning makes his playoff debut vs another Lousiana QB, Delhomme, who has played in Super Bowl. Panthers were just 4-3 down stretch after 7-2 start, but they won six of their last seven road games, and ran ball for 229 yards vs pouting Falcons last week Giant LBs have severe injury issues, but this being playoff games, hard to imagine all able bodies won't play. First home game in three weeks for Giants, who got extra home game during season; they're 8-1 at home, losing turnover-filled fray vs Minnesota, that saw Vikings, return punt, kick and INT for TD in same game, for first time in league history. Coach Fox got Carolina job through work he did with Giants as DC, sxo he knows the ins and outs of winter ball in Swamp, and might have some knowledge that net Carolina a minor upset.

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati- Home side had better record; teams split pair of games during season, with Steelers winning 27-13 on this field in Week 7, as Pitt outrushed Cincy 221-91- they were just 9-14/83 yards passing in first meeting. Roethlisberger has bad thumb and has trouble throwing long passes; Bengals will try to stack the run; until last week, they had held last four opponents under 100 rushing yards, but Chiefs got 202 against them. In second meeting, in Week 13, Bengals were +4 in turnovers, winning 38-31. Steelers outgained Cincy 474-324 in second meeting, but were done in by Bengals scoring three TD's on drives that started in Pitt territory. Bengals lost last two games, but neither mattered; Palmer came out in second quarter last week. Average field position was huge in both games, as Steelers had 16-yard edge in first game, Bengals 12-yard edge in second. Experience edge Steelers, enthusiasm edge Bengals; should be terrific game.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............
Thinking out loud on a cold winter day………….
                    13) Remember, it is not a diet, it is "a restructuring of your eating habits."

                    12) Jump ahead to early next December, the Heisman Trophy presentation. Vince Young, Brady Quinn, Troy Smith are your finalists.

Unfortunately, NBC has backed Quinn heavily, with guest appearances on West Wing and the Tonight Show. Spike Lee will have to be checked into a hospital after swallowing his tongue and trying to attack Beano Cook, who voted twice for Quinn, after Young is denied a Heisman Trophy for second consecutive year.

                    11) St John's led 32-15 at the half at Seton Hall the other night, but lost 69-61 in OT; they're playing without Hill, their best player, but still, tough loss for team that amazingly is no good, despite being in the city with most good basketball players of anywhere in country.

                    10) Not only does Villanova start four guards, three of them are 6-2 or less; we'll start seeing some more talented big men in college ball next year, as NBA age limit forces kids into school for at least a while, but could Villanova be sleeper team to go all the way to Final Four?

                    9) Roy Tarpley is still playing in CBA; didn't know that. The former NBA star, who has battled personal problems for over a decade, is still trying to get back into the league. Weirder yet is that a kid I used to help coach is taking Tarpley's place in league's all-star game later this month.

                    8) Air Force basketball team is 13-1 under former Nugget coach Bzdelik, who got the Stan Van Gundy treatment in Denver, when they wanted to bring George Karl in. AF has already beaten Miami, BYU and Georgia Tech, so they're good.

                    7) After going to a CBA game Thursday, it wouldn't shock me if the next time I went, Gabe Kaplan is coaching the visiting team. The two coaches jumped around and yelled more than the average AAU coach; if they could be pro coaches, why couldn't a guy who works in a deli (obscure reference to the classic movie Fast Break)?

                    6) My favorite football phrase that I have no idea what it means: "Defensive lineman are going to pin their ears back".

                    5) Virginia Tech booted Marcus Vick off the team, and Vick is going to enter the NFL Draft. He should have said he's going to enter the CFL Draft, because that is where he'll wind up.

                    4) That said, Chris Mortensen of ESPN says he thinks Vick will get drafted on second day of NFL Draft, so go figure. He says some NFL scouts like Marcus' passing mechanics better than his brother's. Hmmmm.

                    3) Toronto Raptors have worst home record in NBA, but they are getting better, winning five games in row, and going 9-0 vs spread in their last nine contests.

                    2) Since 1990, starting QB's making their first start in a playoff game are 31-28.

                    1) January 3, 1999. Last time Patriots lost a playoff game. The opponent? Jacksonville Jaguars.
