  • One Thing To Say This Was By For The Worst Bowl Games For Refs.

NOT JUST IN LAST NIGHT games but the whole bowl games even the annc. on a lot gamees were ripping on the refs. i do hate when the refs come into play on deciding an outcome of the game like, IOWA/FLA.ST game when iowa kicked the onside kick off and iowa recovered and the ref. threw the flag saying iowa was offside which replayed show that they were not errrrrrrrrrrrr
just my 2 cents the REFS SUCKED BAD THIS YEAR
    GETER DONE PEACEEEE

    Agreed

Totally agree with that analysis. I think replay showed how inferior the general group of referees is in college. In the NFL, most calls are correct as made (not all but most). In these bowls games, I would venture to say that 50% were corrected. The game just appeared way too fast for some of these crews.
Lack of money is the root of all evil.

Slew, I agree 100% I've often said the players are too big and fast to be officiated by 60+ year old men.

Rocko, when I first saw the replay I thought the same thing. No way was he offsides.

Then a buddy of mine raised a good point. The angle of the replay. The angle was about 10-20 yards up field. The Iowa player's feet were clearly onside. However, the runner was leaning forward. It's possible his head was offsides. Like offsides on the line of scrimmage the feet have nothing to do with a player being offsides.

The flag was thrown immediately. Before it was known if Iowa would recover the onside kick.

i think the big ten crew did a decent job. you are always going to have controversy. did anyone here that when keith jackson mentioned the equipment failure in the replay booth on vice youngs toss when his knee hit??? that is no excuse they should have done something but the correct call is to let the play go and not rule down by contact. if it was close which it was not the play would not have been able to be reviewed if down by contact was the call.

I Know In Another Thread They Were Talking About A Fix.although I Dont Believe In A Game Being Fixed I Do Believe A Ref Can Change The Game.i Am Like I Have Said Before A High School Referee, many Many Times I Have Had A Game That Was 35-0 At The Half And This Team Losing Bad And You Do Your Best To Make The Other Team Look Good.not Win But Look Good.a No Call When You See A Team Down 35 Is Almost A Given.got Me Thinking Though If It Happens When I Am Involved
In A Blowout It Could Happen In A Close Game I Am Not Officiating.just Like Wrestling The Referee Is In Charge Of Telling The Wrestlers When To Finish The Match.if And I Said If A Game Is Fixed You Have To Look At The Ref.

DES MOINES -- A Conference USA official said league referees made a mistake when they flagged Iowa's Chad Greenway for being offside late in the fourth quarter of Monday's Outback Bowl, the Des Moines Register reported Wednesday in a copyright story.

Down by seven with 1:24 left, Iowa's Scott Chandler recovered an onside kick that would have given the Hawkeyes a chance for a game-tying drive. But officials flagged Greenway for crossing the 35-yard line before the ball was kicked.

Television replays showed Greenway behind the line of scrimmage when kicker Kyle Schlicher's foot hit the ball.

Florida recovered the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock for a 31-24 win.

C-USA coordinator of officials Gerald Austin told the Register that the offsides penalty was one of five Outback Bowl plays under review by the league.

"Out of approximately 175 plays in this game, we have five under specific review -- including an important call at the end of the game," Austin said. "We do teach our officials that toward the end of the game, the calls should clearly be a foul. In this case, the onside kickoff call was too technical and should not have been made."

The admission has no effect on the game's outcome.

NCAA football managing director Dennis Poppe said the penalty in the Outback Bowl -- along with a questionable call at the end of the Alamo Bowl between Nebraska and Michigan -- forced the NCAA to review its crew selection and protocol process. The issues will be put on the agenda for the NCAA's spring meetings.

The NCAA picks which conferences will provide officials for bowl games to ensure neutrality.
