Thursday's List of 13: College kids provide ton of thrills
                  13) Damn. USC-Texas game was an amazing game, just full of thrills and great plays. USC didn't lose as much as they just ran out of time. ABC got their money's worth.

                  12) Now all the naysayers can get off Mack Brown's back, as he becomes football's version of Jim Boeheim, a maligned guy who wins a championship and becomes an icon.

                  11) We said it in this space in September, and will repeat it; as much as I dislike individual awards, Vince Young is the best college football player this year. USC was the best team, but Young carried Longhorns, just like he did at Ohio State.

                  10) Last night's Nebraska-Penn State game was one where it seemed right that the game end in a tie; the teams just fought so hard, and the kickers were so awful, that it would've been justice if they just left it as a tie, which couldn't happen.

Tonight was a game where the teams just went toe-to-toe for 60 minutes, and someone was going to be winning at the end of the game, and that was Texas. I mean, USC will have bitter taste in their mouth, and they're 34-1 in their last 35 games!!!

                  9) Vince Young would be unwise to go pro right now; he is a great, great college player, but his passing mechanics could use some work. Getting carried away in glow of this win isn't in his best interests.

                  8) That said, if he did come out, and I ran an NFL team, there is no doubt I'd take him over Matt Leinert.

                  7) With the recent trend of players leaving college early for the NFL, it makes arguments about who is the best team ever irrelevant. How could these teams be as good as ones from a period where all the teams had fifth-year seniors?

                  6) Good week for senior citizens; the day after Bowden and Paterno's team put on great show in the Orange Bowl, Marv Levy got back into business with Buffalo Bills, consulting for them. It is good to see the wisdom of age rewarded.

                  5) By the way, in the last four years, only two AFC teams are without a playoff appearance: Levy's Bills and Reggie Bush's Houston Texans.

                  4) I saw graphic the other day that said in one of the bowls a few years ago, 51 kids from that game made the NFL. I wish I could remember what game (Miami-Ohio State Fiesta Bowl?) but this game might wind up rivaling that figure.

                  3) Groundskeeping must be an amazing job. Six inches of rain fell in Pasadena the other day, but field was in great shape.

                  2) I guess it still amazes me that these kids play so hard, and other people are making a freakin' fortune off them. Because players come and go so quickly, unionizing them is tough. A college education is a good reward, but do the math on how much money 97,000 people at ($100?? more?) a ticket makes, then add in TV money, ad revenue and souvenir sales. Wow.

                  1) Texas allowed 75 points in last two Rose Bowls, but they won both games. They'll lose their bowl game next year, if not in national title game. These two Rose Bowls are a very tough act to follow.
