    Rose Bowl Pasasdena Jan 4
USC, Texas won last two Rose Bowls; this game has incredible amount of hype, think LA location might actually hurt USC, with them being so close to him, distractions-wise. Reggie Bush as a Heisman winner has to inspire Longhorns, since their QB had to sit there and watch the ceremony in New York. Texas went up to Columbus in September and beat Ohio State, 25-22, outgaining Buckeyes 383-260, if they can beat Ohio State in Horseshoe, it is possible that they can win this game on the up.

USC trailed at halftime in these games: 13-10 at Oregon, 21-3 at Arizona State, 21-14 at Notre Dame, 21-13 at home vs Fresno St; they won all those games, and haven't lost at all, but point is, in their last four games, they were +15 in turnovers. Maybe they don't get these turnovers here; if not, their defense can be beat by big plays. Trojans haven't always played sixty minutes well; they need their A game to beat the Longhorns.

Texas scored 40+ points in each of their last 11 games; Ohio St was only team to keep them under 40, and only team that was a favorite to beat them. Longhorns covered all seven of their tilts vs bowl teams this season. Enough of the talk; lets play ball!!!!

Xavier is 5-4 in its last nine games vs St Joe's, splitting four tilts at this site. Tennessee is 8-1, losing only at Oklahoma State; they have their SEC opener at South Carolina on Sunday. Five of last six Vol wins are by 11+.

Dayton won seven of last eight games vs Fordham, taking last three visits to Rose Hill by 19,14,13 points. Flyers lost their last three games to Cincinnati, Northern Iowa and Vanderbilt; they're 1-2 on road, losing at double OT at Creighton, but winning first of two matchups with Bearcats. First Fordham game in 12 days.

Clemson's leading rebounder is out with injury; Tigers won last four home games vs Florida State by 9,5,14,9 points, as visitor is 2-12 SU in last 14 series games. Charlotte lost 96-90 at Rhode Island two years ago, the last time these two sides met. 49ers won last six of last eight games, but their guards are bad defenders, so they'll struggle vs good clubs URI isn't that good, losing four of last five games, and only win was vs Quinnipiac; their last game was 78-56 loss vs BC.

George Washington won three of last four games vs Temple, in series where Owls had won six games in row before that. GW is 8-1 after getting pounded 79-58 at NC State; their first eight wins were Maryland and the seven dwarfs. Temple lost two of its last three games, losing 73-42 at Auburn, 75-53 vs Villanova.

Yale just won at Rice, making them 6-7; now they step way up in class as they visit Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas hosts Kentucky on Saturday, so they could be looking past spunky Ivy Leaguers. Yale has losses by 73-64 at Nebraska, 87-60 at Bucknell, 76-60 at Hartford, 76-63 at Providence and 79-69 at James Madison.

Pitt won five of last six games vs Notre Dame, last four by eight or less points; they won last three series games at this site by 2,3,17 points. Irish won seven games in row since home loss to Michigan, including win at Alabama, one of two road wins this season (65-63 at IPFW). Pitt beat Wisconsin, South Carolina in their last two games, so they're still pretty good.

Home side won last six DePaul-Cincinnati games, with Demons losing last seven visits to this site by 29,25,8,17,21,23,23 points, obviously, things bit different now for Bearcats, they're making Big East debut with interim coach that has team at 11-2. Blue Demons missing one of their better players with foot injury.

Memphis lost at home to Texas Monday; now their schedule is going softer, as C-USA ain't what it used to be. MTSU is 7-4, 3-3 on road; they lost 76-68 at Louisville, also lost in OT at Indiana State, by 18 at Utah State and 83-67 in a home game vs Austin Peay. Penn is just back east from Hawai'i trip; Quakers lost to Temple, 50-46 and by 13 at Duke, so they have some talent. Citadel isn't a basketball school; compared to Citadel, Penn is Duke, UCLA combined. Bulldogs are 6-5, but lost 84-70 to Navy and dropped their Southern Conference opener 83-57 at Western Carolina.

Wednesday's List of 13: So long to Martz Madness.....
As a Ram fan since the mid-60's, the Mike Martz era, seven years of wide open, turnovers-be-damned, special teams-less and generally winning football, is mercifully over. There is a time when divorce benefits both parties, and this is one........

      13) First of all, the Rams don't win Super Bowl without Mike Martz; his only year as offensive coordinator was one of the greatest offensive seasons in NFL history. His reward? Six years as head coach, but he has proved he isn't up to that.

      12) First of all, off the field, Martz proved incapable of playing well with others, whether it be the front office or Mrs. Warner How a two-time MVP got run out of town because the coach had a public spat with the MVP's wife is beyond me.

      11) The most maddening part of a Mike Martz team is how, in same game, they could be utterly brilliant, shockingly inept. In 2004, they trailed at Seattle 27-10 with 5:40 left to play, but still won, hardly using a 2:00 offense in the overtime win.

      10) But then, they lost 31-10 to the 2004 Dolphins, who were 0-6 at the time. They lost the opener this year to the 49ers, an awful team, which spelled the official end of Martz Madness, at least the St Louis version. They lost in Week 17 of 2003 at Detroit, when they needed the game for home field.

      9) Is anyone better at developing quarterbacks? No.

      8) His timeout/replay challenge strategy was pathetic his first couple years as head coach, but he did get better at that, as he got more experienced. More I watch NFL games, though lot of coaches have that problem.

      7) He hired Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator, and Smith was so good at forcing turnovers, it masked the problem the Rams had holding onto the ball. Once Smith went to Chicago then everything got unmasked. Had Smith stayed, the Rams would still be a power. I firmly believe that.

      6) Draft choices were often reaches; he used a third rounder on Eric Crouch, who didn't even want to play, much less go to WR from QB. Trung Canidate was 2nd round disaster. This is where lot of his problems with front office came from.

      5) Did his players like playing for him? Yes. But in one year as offensive coordinator, Martz alienated a lot of Vermeil's staff. Letting Vermeil get out of St Louis was a huge mistake, but at the time, management had no choice. Once they won Super Bowl, Martz was so golden, they couldn't let him get away.

      4) Martz is only coach ever to lose a playoff game to Saints; he lost Super Bowl as 12-point favorite, playoff game to the Panthers as an 8-point favorite. Those things don't happen a lot. Great coaches win games they're supposed to win.

      3) Are the Rams guaranteed to get better now that he is out of St Louis? Hell no. They need to hire a CEO-type leader, a guy who can unite what is a fractured franchise. But at times, you need to take a step back, in order to take two forward at some point down the road.

      2) My endorsement? Jerry Gray, defensive coordintor of the Bills; he played for the John Robinson Rams, his teams up in Buffalo play solid defense, and he has pride in being a Ram. Ron Rivera from the Bears would be second choice, and old friend Al Saunders should also get interviewed, but the man in charge of the search, John Shaw, may want to totally cut away from Vermeil/Martz era.

      1) Will Martz resurface? Yes. Will his teams continue to score a lot of points? Definitely. Will he be missed in St Louis? Not if Shaw hires someone who values all three aspects of game: offense, defense and special teams. One can hope.
