          Here it is.......

Pedro Martinez was scratched from his start against the New York Yankees on Tuesday with pain in the right side of his back.

Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little hoped his ace would miss just one start but reserved comment on the severity of the injury pending results of an MRI, which the team planned as soon as possible.

Martinez felt pain Monday when he was playing long-toss in the outfield before the opener of Boston's three-game series with New York, Little said.

He said he suspects Martinez has a strained muscle. In showing the area affected, Little pointed to a spot beneath his own right shoulder blade.

"He didn't feel anything in that area until he went out and long-tossed," Little said. "We're still in hopes that it would just involve this one start."

He said Martinez would not start Wednesday's series finale.

Martinez is 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA. Bruce Chen, 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three relief appearances for Boston, will start in his place.

Little said Martinez no longer was affected by a groin injury that bothered him but never forced him to miss a start. The new injury is unlike any the pitcher has had, Little said.

The Red Sox have been careful with Martinez. He was healthy all last season when he was 20-4 with a 2.26 ERA that led the AL. But he spent time on the disabled list in each of the previous three seasons.

"We're always concerned about our ace," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. "But he's in great condition. His shoulder feels terrific and this is a setback, but we all hope it's going to be a very brief one."
          Good luck,
          John
