    Orange Bowl Miami Jan 3
Favorites covered seven of last nine Orange Bowls. Paterno has a 10-1-2 record as favorite in bowls, and is 5-2-1 as favorite this season. Florida State has had numerous distractions, somehow got into ACC title game, upset Virginia Tech and is here, but no mistake about it, this is not a stellar Seminole squad. Penn State covered its last seven games, while Florida State lost three of its last four games, losing to Clemson, Florida by combined score of 69-14. Seminoles are 2-1 as underdog this season.

Penn State lost its only game on last play at Ann Arbor Oct 15; otherwise, they'd be quite a story. Of course, they also snaked out the Sept 24 game at Northwestern, converting 4th-and-long in last minute of 34-29 win. Bowden's impressive record in bowls (15-10-1 vs spread, mostly as favorite) makes it hard to suggest giving 10 points, but I sure as hell wouldn't take the points, as Lions seem like team of destiny this season, and have a senior QB in shifty Robinson.

These two coaches have combined to win 712 games and four national titles. Paterno's team is on upswing; Seminoles are little bit on downside of things, but their young QB improved as the season went on. This spread jumped to 10 after Nicholson was sent home for domestic dispute in hotel; those kind of things rarely help. Seven of last 10 Florida State games went over total. If you made me take a side in this game, I'd tiptoe to Penn State

    Rose Bowl Pasasdena Jan 4
USC, Texas won last two Rose Bowls; this game has incredible amount of hype, think LA location might actually hurt USC, with them being so close to him, distractions-wise. Reggie Bush as a Heisman winner has to inspire Longhorns, since their QB had to sit there and watch the ceremony in New York. Texas went up to Columbus in September and beat Ohio State, 25-22, outgaining Buckeyes 383-260, if they can beat Ohio State in Horseshoe, it is possible that they can win this game on the up.

USC trailed at halftime in these games: 13-10 at Oregon, 21-3 at Arizona State, 21-14 at Notre Dame, 21-13 at home vs Fresno St; they won all those games, and haven't lost at all, but point is, in their last four games, they were +15 in turnovers. Maybe they don't get these turnovers here; if not, their defense can be beat by big plays. Trojans haven't always played sixty minutes well; they need their A game to beat the Longhorns.

Texas scored 40+ points in each of their last 11 games; Ohio St was only team to keep them under 40, and only team that was a favorite to beat them. Longhorns covered all seven of their tilts vs bowl teams this season. Enough of the talk; lets play ball!!!!

Vanderbilt is 9-1 and might be best team in SEC; they have wins at Dayton (63-60), Georgetown (68-61), in only road games this season. Georgia Tech lost last week at Air Force (54-46); Vandy also uses some of those Princeton techniques, only with better players. Both teams resume their league schedules on weekend.

Indiana won 11 of its last thirteen games vs Michigan, winning last six played at this site by 9,5,14,13,35 and 2 points. Indiana is 8-2, winning last four games by 26,12,18,24 points, and they are playing first true home game in month. Michigan is 10-1, and on a 3-game winning streak; they're 3-0 on road (BU, NDame, SFla)

Old Dominion won its last six games vs NC-Wilmington, taking last three games at this site, 70-56/55-51/71-68. Monarchs lot 3 of last five games, are 1-1 in CAA. Seahawks are 2-0 in CAA, winning by 9,20 points, but they losttheir last two non-league games, to Charleston, East Carolina, both disappointing losses.

Boston College won its last five games vs UMass by 19,1,18,2 and 9 points. This is bigger game for UMass than BC, which is 11-1 and has an ACC game at Georgia Tech. Michigan State is only team to beat BC (77-70, in NYC). Minutemen are 5-4 after close loss to St John's in Holiday Festival last week.

Kentucky visits Kansas Saturday, but first hosts Central Florida squad that lost 80-47 at Florida, lost 73-68 vs Western Kentucky Wildcats won last three games by 12,6,8 points; it seems they're not powerful enough to rout decent teams, but Knights not at level of Iona, Ohio U., last two teams Kentucky beat.

Saint Louis makes its A-14 debut vs St Bonaventure; Billikens are 6-6, but 5-0 after a loss, as they've gone WLWL for all dozen games this season- they lost 60-57 to Gonzaga, 60-50 to Iowa, 75-63 at UNC, so they're not bad. Bonnies lost three of last four games, all away from home, but at 6-5, they're much improved.

LSU beat Tulane last three years by 67-48/83-58/74-62, Tulane is 3-5 after 50-49 loss to New Orleans; they lost the previous road game 82-61 at Butler. LSU travels to UCon nfor game Saturday, then they start SEC play next week, after 78-76 loss at Ohio St that was their third loss in their last four games.

Marquette makes its Big East debut as UConn comes to town; Huskies are 11-0 but played lame schedule since coming back from winning Maui Classic; best team they played in December was UMass (78-60). They're 1-0 on road, winning 75-56 in first game, at Pepperdine. Marquette is 9-3, but they've been off for the last ten days.

Home side won last seven Miami-Northern Illinois games, with Red Hawks losing last three visits to DeKalb by 8,8,10 points. Miami is 4-5, but lost last three games and hasn't played for 10 days- they won MAC opener at Central Michigan last month by 75-62. NIU won six of its last seven games.

St Mary's is just 6-5, but just had upset win at home vs Nevada Saturday, their fourth win in last five games. Gaels are 0-3 away from home though, losing at Colorado (73-54), Arizona (73-61) and Air Force (63-51). TCU is 4-7, losing three of their last four games; they have their WAC opener vs Wyoming Saturday.

Wake Forest opens ACC play by hosting Duke Sunday; maybe, just maybe, they're looking past East Carolina here? Wake has won 10 of 12 games, winning three in row since home loss last month to DePaul. East Carolina lost three of its four games on road, with only win at Wofford; road losses are by 26,22,11 pts.

Hard to tell how good Texas A&M is, because this is their first road game, and only decent team they played is Auburn (72-67) so this will be good test. Pacific won four of its last five games and is 6-4; they host a Big West game vs Cal-Riverside in four days. Pacific plays a pretty good non-conference schedule.

Pepperdine is improving, having upset UNLV after they hung in at Kansas, before fading late in that game; Waves are 4-7, but in last four games are 2-1. Oklahoma State might be too much for them athletically, but Cowboys are also struggling, losing both its road games, at Gonzaga and UAB- they start Big 12 play on Saturday, when they visit the Missouri Tigers.

Oklahoma is 8-2, 1-1 on road, losing 85-74 at Villanova, winning 62-53 at Tulsa; they won last game 68-56 vs Alabama, and are
8-0 if they allow less than 85 points. SMU is 7-4, winning three of last four games vs D-I teams. Mustangs are picked 10th in its new league, C-USA. They haven't beaten any good teams yet.

Brown lost 67-56 at Canisius last year; Bruins won 59-57 in last game at West Point, only their second win in last eight games. Brown is 0-4 at home. Canisius is 1-8 this season, but hung in its last game, losing only 80-68 at West Virginia, but Beilein might have taken it easy on them, too. Good game to avoid.

Visiting team won the Chattanooga-Furman game last two years, with Mocs winning last visit here 77-68. UTC won five of its last six games after 1-5 start, they're just 2-6 vs D-I teams. Furman is 3-5 vs D-I teams; they won tournament last week, beating both D-I newcomer Kennesaw State and South Carolina State.

Davidson just lost 76-67 at Illinois-Chicago, after losing 90-80 at Syracuse; they also have 84-55 loss at Duke, but beat St Joe's, Missouri, so they're not bad, just not at this level. No. Carolina is young team that is 8-2, but might be peaking ahead to ACC opener Saturday vs NC State. Spread seems low.

NC-Greensboro lost its last three games, at Duke (102-69), 83-73 at William & Mary, and at Delaware (89-77); they also lost 85-53 at Vanderbilt earlier in season. NC State is playing well at 11-1, on six-game win streak, but like Tar Heels, they could be looking ahead to Saturday's ACC game with their arch-rival.

Loyola, MD is one of most improved teams in country; they just upset Delaware 99-86 as 7-point road dog. Greyhounds are 9-2 but got hammered 98-59 at Virginia, biggest name they faced. Providence is 6-4, winning last three games over Yale (92-70), Northeatsern (92-70) and San Diego State (80-65). Dangerous tilt for Friar club that opens Big East play Thursday at Georgetown.

Western Carolina is 6-8; they lost three of last five games, with losses at Georgia (89-65), Maryland (87-57); they won their only Southern Conference game so far. Ole Miss is is 7-3, but hasn't been on road much; they're 6-1 in Oxford. Rebels open the SEC schedule at Alabama Saturday; they might be looking ahead.

Weird thing about Iona playing Fresno is that both sides won at Iowa State last month. Iona has lost lost last two games after an 8-0 start, but losses were at Kentucky, Seton Hall, so excusable. Fresno State won its last three games and is 7-3; their last two games were close wins over UCSB, San Francisco. Bulldogs get WAC play underway Saturday, when Utah State visits.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, for first time in '06
          13) Notre Dame's public service announcement shows why it is a challenging job; the school president brags that the cash they're getting from the Fiesta Bowl is going into help build a new science building. No mention of reinvesting any of it into sports facilities, that might help recruit future athletes.

          12) The president didn't mention how they're the only school that doesn't have to share its bowl money with other schools since others belong to a league. Plus, they get money from a contract with NBC. Lot more $$ coming in than going out.

          11) If the president wants to keep competing with Buckeyes of the world, they better sink some of that cash into facilities upgrades, or else they'll never recruit good enough players to stay at an 8-4 level. Then they'll have to fire Weis, too.

          10) Miami fired four assistant coaches after their nightmare vs LSU. People get edgy when you lose bowl games 40-3.

          9) In his first six seasons at Virginia Tech, Frank Beamer had a record of 25-40-1; today, his butt would have been long-fired, but the administration stuck behind him, and in the 13 years since, he is 121-29. Sometimes, patience pays off.

          8) In 57 years of the NFL Draft, two Texas QBs were drafted.

          7) Those annoying FedEx commericals, where they make fun of the one guy who is always wrong? Well there is a mistake: they say that James Dean was an actor, and Jimmy Dean is a guy who makes sausages, but at one time, he was an actor, too, playing a bit part on the old TV show Daniel Boone.

          6) Why waste time flipping coins before games and overtime? Why not just give the visiting team the ball to start the game, and then you'd save time and avoid possible confusion.

          5) Over/under in Texas-USC game was opened at 75; since, it has been wagered down to 69, probably because of a lot of wet weather in the Los Angeles area.

          4) Jim Tressel reminds a lot, in terms of mannerisms, of Dick Vermeil; he also has an amazing record, winning five national titles, four at the I-AA level. Tressel is underrated, if that is a possibility coaching at Ohio State.

          3) Tressel's success won't make the offseason any easier for Michigan's Lloyd Carr, though.

          2) Went to pick up chinese food after the Virginia Tech game and ran into woman I went to high school with; she was not real happy that her husband wouldn't go see King Kong with her. "Damn football" was her comment. Whoops.

          1) it is funny' watched football for most of the last three days but now we have to switch directly into college hoop mode. Conference action kicks in this week, so make sure you still log on every day for analysis of all the games.
