Emerald Bowl San Francisco Dec 29
Utah won five of its last six bowl games, going 2-0 under Meyer; they lost their QB to broken leg in Nov 12 loss to New Mexico, but beat BYU in rivalry game the next week with backup Ratliff (17-35, 240 passing yards) under center. Utes lost three in row in October, first of which was 31-17 at North Carolina of ACC, a team Georgia Tech beat 27-21 in September. Utes covered 15 of their last 18 as underdog, while Tech is 40% as a favorite since Gailey became HC (2-4 this year).

This game is in San Francisco, which allows more Utah fans to attend. Tech won its last two bowl games 52-10/51-14, but lost in last visit to this area, 30-21 to Fresno at San Jose.

Georgia Tech scored 7,14,17,7 points in its four losses; they averaged 23.9 in their wins. Utah allowed 28+ points in four of their last five games, giving up 31,34 in their last two contests, despite fact that Wittingham is defensive coach, having been Utes' DC for 10 years, prior to becoming HC. Tech plays in better league than Utah; they won at Miami despite completing 11 of 30 passes. Jacket offense scored more than 17 points in only one of their last five games, but the defense is very strong.

Mountain West teams are 0-3 in this bowl, losing 20-13 (vs Va Tech), 35-21 (vs BC) and 34-19 (vs Navy) so even though stadium is closer to Utah, MWC players might prefer a trip to sunny south. Georgia Tech beat both Miami and Auburn; their defense is very good, they played the harder schedule, but their QB is a scatterarm who was ill during season-he is good runner. Both teams have eight senior starters.

I look at Tech's defense, and that Ball has had chance to recover from his illness, and I lean towards Yellow Jackets in this game.

Holiday Bowl San Diego Dec 29
This is third year in row the #5 team in country has come to San Diego for Holiday Bowl; Texas and Cal, the previous two teams, both lost as favorites that were disappointed to be here, and not in January 1 bowl (who is disappointed to be in San Diego?)

Underdogs covered the last seven Holiday Bowls, winning SU in four of last five years, all as dogs of 7+ points; these games are usually high scoring (four of last five totals 61+) Oregon won this game 35-30 five years ago. Both sides lost their last two bowl games, so they'll be eager to turn that around. Sooners have better chance, behind stud RB Peterson, since Oregon is using backup QB Dixon after Clemens broke his ankle in game where we had the Ducks at Arizona, a non-covering win.

Deciding factor here is that Oregon allows 134 yards per game on ground; Cal had 214 against them, Washington State 173, Arizona 168 and USC 278. Oklahoma can do damage there.

James Madison is 2-5 this season, with only wins at home vs VMI (74-61), Appalachian State (81-79,ot). Dukes lost three of five home games. Loyola is 6-0 vs Cleveland State the last three years, winning by 67-63/90-83/77-72 in last three visits here. Ramblers are 7-2 this season, 1-2 on road; they split California trip last week. Vikings are 2-5 vs D-I teams, 2-2 at home. Cleveland State was up six at half at Michigan State; their record should be better than it is.

Nomadic New Orleans is 0-5 on road, losing by 11 (Tulane), 41 (LSU), 8 (Miss State), 12 (Purdue) and 6 (Vandy); their best guy broke his wrist and is out. Kansas won its last three games by 13,20,23 points, but is still just 6-4, with four new starters in the lineup. Jayhawks allowed 53.7 ppg in last three games.

New Mexico State is 4-6; they've been off for nine days since a 74-72 win over Texas-San Antonio. Aggies are 4-2 at home, with losses to UTEP (64-55), Sam Houston (78-77ot). Texas Tech lost four of its last five games, is 6-6, 0-5 away from Lubbock. Their only win in five December games was 103-50 vs Pan American.

UL-Lafayette is just 2-6, 1-5 on road, with losses at So. Illinois (65-47), Tennessee (83-76), Georgia St (76-61), La Tech (85-78) and LSU (81-62). Nevada is 8-1, beating Norfolk St 56-46 in last game Tuesday; only two of their eight wins are by more than 13 points- they have trip to St Mary's on Saturday.

Home side won Fresno-San Francisco games the last two years, with Dons losing 52-43 in last visit here two years ago. USF off to 4-8 start, 0-3 on road, losing by 23 at UCSB, 15 at Stanford, 13 at Marquette. Fresno is 5-0 at home, 1-3 on road, with wins at home by 8,7,15,19,3 points.

Washington was 3-0 vs Arizona State last year, but Huskies had OT scare in pac-10 tourney, before ousting ASU, which is 1-4 in last five visits to Seattle, losing by 8,9,13,2 points; three of last seven series games went OT. Sun Devils lost only road game so far this year, 62-43 at Iowa; they're 6-3 overall.

Arizona is 13-1 in last 14 games vs Washington State, but loss was in Tucson last year; Wildcats then escaped the second meeting at Pullman by a point in OT, 57-56- they won last seven trips to Paloose, by 1,4,13,7,33,23,2 points. This year, Coogs are 7-2, winning last five home games.

Cal lost last two visits to USC, 83-66/70-60; this is at the Staples Center, not Sports Arena, where Trojans beat North Carolina. USC is on nine-game win streak after 0-2 start. Cal Bears lost its last two games after six-game win streak; they're 0-2 on road, as they lost 69-56 to Kansas (in KC) and 67-65 at Eastern Michigan

LMU lost its last three games and nine of last 11; their losses in Hawai'i were by total of eight points. Lions are 0-4 in last four road games, losing by 47 (Washington), 8 (Long Beach), 18 at Montana and 66-63 at Hawai'i. UNLV just got beat as a double digit home favorite by Pepperdine; they're 2-6 in last 8 games.

Hawai'i is tough at home, beating Michigan State by 22, Saint Louis by 18; they're picked second in WAC, with three starters back from 16-13 team. Penn hasn't played in 22 days and hasn't won since 86-73 win over Navy 27 days ago; they lost only road game so far, 72-59 at Duke, last game they've played.

Idaho State is 5-2 vs D-I teams, 2-2 away from home losing 90-66 at Kansas, 86-69 at North Dakota State; their best win is at home vs Boise State. Binghamton lost its first league game at Albany last week; they're small but quick and 2-8, 1-5 away from home. Much shorter trip for Idaho State, to Logan.

Arkansas-Little Rock is 5-4, 0-4 on road, losing at Appalchian St (75-65), Michigan State (72-67), Illinois (75-49) and So. Illinois (67-42). Trojans are picked third in Sun Belt. Utah State lost its first WAC game, at Hawai'i, but is 6-3, 3-0 at home vs D-I teams, with wins by 18,1,11 points.

Davidson is 4-3, 1-3 on road, routing Appalchian State in league game, losing at Duke, Charlotte (2OT) and Syracuse; their wins are vs UMass, St Joe's and Missouri, so they play tough slate of teams. Illinois-Chicago beat Georgia Tech by 22, but also lost at home to Chicago State, so you never quite know what you're getting from them.

Eastern Washington won two of its last three games vs Boise St but lost in last visit to this site, 78-67; Eagles are 1-3 in last four games after 97-66 beating at BYU Tuesday; they're 2-3 on road, with other losses by 17 at Washington, 10 at Gonzaga. Boise St is 6-4 so far this season, 4-1 at home.

Denver lost its last four games, all on the road, twice in OT; they lost last game in overtime at Montana State. Sacramento State lost last game by 30 at UCLA Friday, but they're 8-5, 2-0 vs D-I teams at home. Hornets are picked second in shaky Big Sky, as Denver is picked first in Sun Belt, but has struggled so far.

Northern Illinois is actually ranked 4th in whole country in one RPI rating right now; they're 5-2, 1-2 on road, beating Toledo by 72-69, losing 87-51 at Missouri State, 55-54 at Illinois-Chicago. San Jose is 1-6 in their last seven games; four of their last five losses are by 10+ pts. Someone better give the computer that has NIU fourth in country a major tuneup.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..............
                13) We hear so much about athletes screwing up, but I just found out Kevin Garnett, over next two years, has pledged to build 24 houses for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Out of his own pockets, which are rather deep, but still……. I watch lot of sports on TV, and somehow never heard about it. The guy should get lot of credit for helping out like that………why do we always emphasize negative things?

                12) Colorado and Arizona State meet in football for first time next fall; the two coaches will both be former Boise State mentors, but this game was scheduled ten years ago, before either guy was a head coach, so the meeting is a coincidence.

                11) Can we come up with a better term than "skill position"? It takes skill to play the offensive line. Seems like we should be able to come up with a term that is not insulting to guys who are, obviously, very important players.

                10) According to the RPI (Ratings Performance Index) that is used as one of the indicators to select the Field of 65 in March, here are the top eight schools as of last night. Keep in mind that the RPI becomes more relevant as the season goes on, and there is more data to analyze:

                1) Duke 2) Memphis 3) Gonzaga 4) Northern Illinois (hey, Cindy Crawford is from DeKalb 5) UCLA 6) Cincinnati 7) Bucknell 8) Villanova (despite fact that Wildcats thumped Bucknell in Lewisburg).

                9) Top five conferences thus far, according to RPI, are:

                1) Big 11 2) Big East 3) Missouri Valley 4) ACC 5) SEC.
Of local interest, the MAAC (Siena's league) is ranked 13th of 31 leagues, America East (Albany's league) is a lame 27th.

                8) Wednesday's Alamo Bowl was arguably the worst-reffed college football game I've ever seen. Kirk Herbstriet trashed the crew for most of the last three quarters, then the game ended in near-chaos, with 50 Nebraska players on the field, Stanford band-style, while Michigan desperately lateraled the ball, finally getting tackled on the Nebraska 15, with no flags for too many men on the field. Really bad officiating. I didn't have any rooting interest; it really was that awful.

                7) Friend of mine recently had an operation; while sleeping soundly one night after the operation, the friend is awakened by nurse, to give him a sleeping pill. Why would you wake someone up who is already sleeping, to give them a sleeping pill?

                6) Wonder how Mr Bud Selig, commissioner of the worst-run sport since the XFL, feels about three members of the South Bronx team already blowing off his World Baseball Classic? Why should other teams' players play if Bronx players aren't going to?

                5) Adam Morrison is a better player than JJ Redick, and it isn't that close. Put Morrison on Duke, Redick on Gonzaga, and the Zags wouldn't be playing the way they have been this fall, while Duke would be better.

                4) In space of four days this coming week, Georgia Dome is hosting the Peach Bowl, Falcons-Panthers and Sugar Bowl. Good week to be a vendor.

                3) Jacksonville has played nine games since a Week 7 bye; one of them (26-18 loss at Indy) was against team with winning record.

                2) If Jags and Chargers played on neutral field and line was even, would any person not named Del Rio or Leftwich bet on Jacksonville? But Jags are 11-4, Bolts are 8-6.

                1) Think of the fine line between making the playoffs and having a rotten year. Julius Peppers doesn't run into the kicker last week, Dallas is history. Atlanta makes a short FG in OT, instead of getting it blocked, they're right in ***** of things. Chargers don't lose that game in Philly on blocked FG, they're still alive.
