Champs Sports Bowl Orlando Dec 27
Colorado's program, even by their standards, is in disarray- their coach was fired 18 days ago, they're 1,900 miles from home, the QB is out with post-concussion syndrome, and the school was scrambling to find some way to pay for the expenses of families of the assistant coaches to go to Florida. Interim coach was the guy who replaced John Mackovic for five games at Arizona two years ago; he is the DC, but offense, with senior QB Klatt out, is where the Buffaloes figure to struggle. Oh, and this: Colorado is 0-3 in its last three games, losing by 30-16/30-3/70-3 scores, all to bowl teams, but still, enough of tank job to get coach fired.

Clemson's last four bowl games have all been one-sided; Tigers have lot of Florida kids, but last two times they came to Florida for bowls, they lost 41-20/55-15. Clemson won its last three tilts by scores of 49-20/35-14/13-9. Under Tommy Bowden, they've been better later in season. Senior QB Whitehurst had shoulder scoped so he could play in this game, but not sure if he will be able to. Backup Proctor is a capable sub. Tigers play their home games on grass, Colorado plays on turf.

I never want to lay double digits in a bowl, since emotions are tough to gauge, but it would be impossible for me to make case for Colorado in this game; they have more distractions, issues than any bowl team I can remember. They already played once in Sunshine State, losing 23-3 at Miami, now their QB is out for this game. If you must, Clemson is the right side, but underdogs were 10-1 against the spread in Clemson games this season, and the lone cover by a favorite was by a half a point.

                Insight Bowl Phoenix Dec 27
Arizona State will have huge crowd edge in this game, since the game is in their backyard, while Rutgers, despite playing in first bowl since 1978 (also vs Sun Devils, that game was in Jersey), hasn't been moving lot of tickets (because they're asking $3,300 for a travel package to game, that doesn't include a game ticket). Anyway, Rutgers is finally in a bowl; their league, Big East, is awful, and only good team Knioghts beat all season was Navy, who they beat 31-21 in late October. But they're here and getting double digits

Arizona State is erratic team with terrific passing offense but an awful defense; they allowed 31+ points in each of their 5 losses, and were lucky Tuitama got hurt in Arizona game, or they would have lost to Arizona and wouldn't be eligible for this game. Sun Devils' first four wins were all by 18+ points, but last two were by a FG each; they are 5-4 as favorite this season. Sun Devils' season eroded once they blew 21-3 halftime lead to USC Oct. 1. If you told ASU in August that this is bowl they'd be playing in they would have been sick. Rutgers is very happpy to be here.

Rutgers played a weak schedule; they gave up 45 pts to South Florida, 56 vs Louisville, and Sun Devils can light scoreboard up but they've had off-field issues brewing under surface all year (a playr murdered a former player outside a nightclub last summer) and there were rumors that Koetter was history, until they got by Arizona in that rivalry game. ASU has edge in talent here, as they led USC 21-3 in that game, but chemistry is all with Scarlet Knights, whose coach just got big contract extension. I think Rutgers is the right side in this game.

Northeastern is 6-1, as they jump from America East to CAA; its only loss is 83-76 at Cal- they really haven't beaten good team, but have two road wins and are 2-0 in CAA. Wright State is 3-5 but won their only Horizon League game so far. Raiders went to Boston last year and beat Northeastern 59-53.

Boston College is 8-2, but 0-2 away from home, losing 77-70 vs Michigan State in NYC, and 73-71 at Maryland in its ACC debut Terps are picked 2nd in tough ACC. Duquesne is 2-6, with four of their last five losses by 18+ points. Dukes went to Boston a year ago and lost 88-70, as 18.5-point underdogs.

Syracuse is actually leaving NY State, but only to give its senior guard McNamara a game in his hometown of Scranton, just over the NY/PA border. Towson State is the victim; they're 3-5, and best team they've played so far is probably Northeastern (67-89) Only three of Syracuse's nine wins are by 22+ points.

Virginia Tech won 80-63 at William & Mary last year, as 7-point road favorite. Hokies are 8-3, losing at buzzer at Duke; since that loss, they're 3-0, beating St John's, Stanford. W&M is 5-3, 0-2 in CAA; they lost 64-60 at UMBC, with league losses by 9,31 pts. Any 76-45 loss to Towson State would say "Stay away".

Gonzaga plays an impossible schedule; they're already 9-2, with 60-57 win at Saint Louis Thursday; now they face 8-1 Memphis squad whose only loss is 70-67 vs Duke. Tigers have wins by 10 at Cincinnati, 8 vs UCLA, 11 at Alabama. Zags' losses are by 4 at Washington, and by hoop vs UConn in Maui.

Providence went to San Diego last year and beat Aztecs 76-67 as 2.5-pt favorite. Friars are 5-4, winning last two games, but the best team they've beaten so far is Northeastern (92-70). Aztecs are 6-4, but they haven't beaten anyone either, as UCSB (66-54) is best team they've beaten this season.

Houston is just 4-3 vs D-I teams, and beat Arizona when Olson suspended couple starters for part of game; Coogs are better at home (3-1, with wins by 4,22,8 points). Rhode Island, one of the many teams Penders used to coach, is 6-3, but their losses are 66-50 at Utah, 71-63 vs Ohio, 63-61 at home vs Wagner.

Tulane lost last game in OT to St Edward's; they're 1-4 in last 5 games, with losses to Butler, Valp and Fairfield. Best team they beat is TCU (56-52). Richmond struggling with Princeton-style of play; they're 1-4 in last five games, with all four losses by 7+; they scored 45 or less points in all four losses.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee is 4-3, been off for 10 days since an 80-60 win over Green Bay in their Horizon opener. Panthers are 1-3 on road, winning 76-51 at South Dakota St, losing at Memphis, as well as Wisconsin. Tennessee Tech. Wyoming is 5-4, 3-1 home, with only home loss to Southern Illinois (57-53).

Texas-San Antonio lost five of its last six games, with last three losses by three or less points, ore in OT; they're 0-2 on road, in 74-72 loss to New Mexico State and 33-pt loss at Iowa. Fullerton is 4-2, winning last two games by eight points each. None of its four wins are by less than eright points.

Florida International is 2-6, and lost its last four games by 25,34, 27 and 9 (ot) points; they're 2-0 at home, however, winning in 2 OTs vs South Florida and beating Central Connecticut, 71-61. St Bonaventure is much-improved at 5-4, but they're 0-3 on road, losing 101-88 at Niagara, 83-68 at Toledo, 69-51 at Marist.

UMass is 4-3, 0-2 on road, losing 78-60 at UConn, 66-63 down at Davidson; Minutemen won last two games, vs Boston U, Siena. St Peter's has great scoring guard in Clark; they're 5-4, but 4-0 in December, winning their first two MAAC games. Peacocks lost 82-71 at Pitt, best team they've played so far.

St John's lost its last three games, but 56-53 loss to Marist was most disturbing (other two were Va Tech, Duke). Red Storm won this event last year, winning by 18,20 points, with Columbia the other team in. Lions scared wits out of NC State last year before a 10-point loss. Columbia is 5-3, 1-3 in last four games, but their last game was decent 75-68 loss at Notre Dame.

Charleston is 4-4 this season, 0-3 on road, losing 72-58 at UNCG, 78-63 at Louisville, 76-71 at VCU; Cougars are little down this yr but they have young talent. NC-Wilmington lost 59-57 last year at Charleston, as 4.5-point dogs. Seahawks are 9-2 this season, with five wins by more than 11 points.

BYU is 6-3 so far this season; they lost last game Thursday at Utah State, 90-81, but Cougars are 5-1 at home, with four of six wins by 19+ points. Eastern Washington is 5-5, 2-2 on the road, with losses 91-74 at Washington, 75-65 at Gonzaga; they won their last game Friday, 76-62 over Cal Poly.

Oregon lost five of its last seven games, beating Howard (91-55) and Santa Clara (75-66); they lost last game Thursday, 80-72 to Portland. Portland State is 3-6 vs D-I teams, with three losses by 18+ points. Vikings are picked for 8th in Big sky, not good, but Ducks have been pretty big disappointment so far this season.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..............
                        13) The Jets lost the first Monday night game on ABC, 31-21 at Cleveland, 35 years ago. They lost the last ABC Monday night game last night, also 31-21. There will be Monday night games next year, by the way, just on ESPN, not ABC.

                        12) Jim Mora Jr usually has such a pleasant disposition, I was wondering if he was adopted, given outbursts his father had in postgame press conferences. So, it was interesting to hear that young Mora snapped Saturday, after the Falcons' loss in overtime ended their season. Lot of expectations with Vick at QB, but Atlanta faded badly down stretch this year.

                        11) Since last year, Steelers are 21-3 with Roethlisberger the starting QB, 4-3 when someone else starts.

                        10) Dallas fired another kicker Monday, the fourth time they fired their kicker this year, second time they fired Cundiff. If not for running into kicker penalty Sunday, Cowboys' season would be over, and Carolina would be in first place, because Cundiff missed a chip shot FG in last minute. .

                        9) ABC didn't have a sideline reporter Monday night, since Michele Tafoya was ill; the broadcast didn't suffer one bit.

                        8) Carson Palmer is rumored to be sitting Sunday, leading a cynical person (who, me?) to suggest that Marvin Lewis is of a mind that he would prefer to play Jaguars than Steelers in the first round of the playoffs.

                        7) What if the Saints got first pick in draft and Reggie Bush stayed at USC for his senior season? He is only a junior, you know. Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth.

                        6) Most underrated coach in history of NFL? Chuck Noll of the Steelers, no doubt. They guy took over a 1-13 team and built it into a team that won four titles in six years, and no one ever talks about the guy. Why is that?

                        5) Carolina still needs a win to make the playoffs, but they're 0-7 in their last seven trips to Georgia Dome, losing last two visits in overtime. Panthers are 4-0 after a loss this season.

                        4) At one point in Monday's dreadful game, in period going from the last part of second quarter until early part of third quarter, New England ran 31 plays in row. Jets were terrible.

                        3) Buffalo Bills are 4-3 in Holcomb's starts, 1-7 in Losman's.

                        2) Mike Tice used his Monday press conference to request a quick resolution to contract status for he and his coaches, as soon as season ends Sunday. Apparently, these coaches go right to work on scouting/personnel stuff, so there's no need to be doing that work for a team that is going to fire you.

                        1) Monday Night Football was a ratings winner on ABC for 35 years. CBS and NBC rejected the package first; I wonder how many people got fired for that mistake?
