    Cowboys let go of Cundiff

    12/26/05 9:50:06 PM CT

Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Dallas Cowboys released kicker Billy Cundiff on Monday.

The Cowboys replaced him with kicker Shaun Suisham, who played two games with Dallas after Jose Cortez was cut in November.

Cundiff, a four-year veteran, became inconsistent with his kicks, forcing head coach Bill Parcells to make the move.

With the Cowboys still fighting to make the playoffs, Cundiff almost cost them the game on Saturday in Dallas' 24-20 win over the Panthers.

The kicker had a 32-yard field goal attempt blocked and also missed a 24-yard field goal that would've tied the game with one minute to play. However, the missed kick was called back after a running-into-the-kicker penalty, resulting in a first down and new life for the Cowboys.

Dallas then pulled out the victory to keep the team's playoff hopes alive after Drew Bledsoe's two-yard touchdown pass to Terry Glenn with 24 seconds left in the game.

Cundiff also missed a 34-yard fourth quarter field goal against the Broncos in a Thanksgiving day game in which they lost in overtime.

Suisham, meanwhile, made a pair of 21-yard field goals against Arizona earlier in the season and was perfect on seven extra-point tries before he was cut to bring Cundiff back from a quad injury.

    Giants sign Lewis

    12/26/05 9:55:07 PM CT

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Giants signed free agent linebacker Kevin Lewis to replace the injured Chase Blackburn.

Blackburn sprained his neck in New York's loss to Washington on Saturday. It is not believed that the rookie suffered any serious damage but he was not expected to return this season.

Lewis started all 16 games for the Giants at middle linebacker in 2004 but was released at the end of the preseason.

Lewis finished second on the Giants in tackles last year with 88 and tallied a sack, three passes defended and a forced fumble.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Lewis to expected to bolster the depth of a unit hit hard by injuries recently. Along with Blackburn, linebackers Antonio Pierce (ankle), Carlos Emmons (strained pectoral muscle) and Reggie Torbor (hamstring) are all battling injuries.
