    Fort Worth Bowl Dec 23
Kansas had to win three of last four games just to get to 6-5 and be bowl eligible; they might be playing for their coach's job, since the AD there is former UConn AD who might want to bring Randy Edsall to Lawrence. This is first bowl game for Jayhawks since they got crushed by NC State 56-26 two years ago. Kansas plays Texas Tech in Big 12 action, so this wide open Houston offense should be a little familiar to them. Jayhawks were minus in turnovers in each of their last seven games; their backup QB Luke bailed them out in finale vs Iowa State, or else they wouldn't be here.

Houston had to beat crosstown rival Rice to get to 6-5; they run wide-open offense like Texas Tech, and have third-year starting QB in Kolb; they were leading 10-1 Oregon at halftime back in September, but lost 38-24. Cougars allowed 29+ points in all five of their losses, 24 or less in their wins. Kansas is more of a defensive team than an offensive one. Houston lost their last five bowl appearances, losing last one in overtime at Hawai'i two years ago.

When naysayers claim there are too many bowls, they're talking about games like this; neither side would seem to be bowl worthy, but they'll benefit next year from extra practices they've been allowed this fall. Houston is playing in its home state, so that has to help somewhat; they were 3-1 as underdog this season. Kansas was 1-1 as favorite, but last time they were favored was Sept 17 vs Louisiana Tech. If I had to choose a side in this game, would take the points with Houston, but I'm glad I don't have to choose. hello

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........
                  13) Dreadful performance by UTEP in the GMAC Bowl; Carson Palmer's brother Jordan was awful, as Miners ended their season on three-game losing streak. Still, they've won 16 games in Mike Price's first two years, after winning total of six in the three years before he got to El Paso.

                  12) ESPN is putting college basketball games on at 6pm this week, to slot them in before football bowl games. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it reminds us of our belief, that if networks wanted some of these schools to play at 3am on a Wednesday, then I'd be setting my alarm for 2:30 to catch the pregame shows, because they'd be on.

                  11) The Angels traded for Edgardo Alfonso and got younger. I thought the Giants already had a decent outfield; what do they need with Steve Finley?

                  10) Rutgers signed coach Schiano to a new 7-year extension after Scarlet Knights finally got to a bowl game this season. He has worked very hard in recruiting the fertile New Jersey high schools, so good for him, for getting it done where they haven't gotten done in almost three decades.

                  9) Baseball players are mostly selfish jerks who don't give a rat's ass about anything but their paychecks? Who knew? Apparently, people in Boston are just finding this out.

                  8) Typically self-absorbed mass hysteria in New England over ****** Damon signing with Bronx. Guess it is OK when someone leaves the Pirates, A's or Royals for big bucks, but when someone leaves Red Sox, you have to hide the sharp objects. Wake up people, it has been like this for thirty years.

                  7) And it is only going to get worse, because the Mets are in the fray now, with their new TV station and suddenly deep pockets.

                  6) Since the greed in baseball is so sickening that a salary cap has zero chance, at least they should abolish AL/NL setup and realign geographically, like the NBA. This would reduce travel expenses, let the money teams beat each other up a little more, and give the smaller market clubs a better shot at making the playoffs.

                  5) Either that, or come clean and just name Vince McMahon commissioner of baseball.

                  4) The fact that I am staying up tonight and spending the first couple hours of my 46th birthday watching the inaugural Poinsettia Bowl does not say much for my social life.

                  3) Will Jerry Tarkanian be the Pete Rose of basketball? If he doesn't get in the Hall of Fame, it is a joke, considering that the NCAA had to pay him $2.5 million after losing a lawsuit. They kept accusing him, but could never pin anything on the Shark. At least Rose admitted guilt to certain infractions, but he too, should be in Hall of Fame, for his exploits as a player.

                  2) Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tony Dungy on the death of his 18-year old son. There is no good time to lose a son, but just before the holidays seems to make it just a little more cruel, if that is possible.

1 ) Of all the coaches in pro sports, Dungy seems the most unlikely, especially for football coach; he is calm, thoughtful, almost devoid of public emotion. He seems more like a college professor or a therapist than a ball coach. But he is a coach, and a very good one. If you had a son, you'd want him to grow up to be a man like Dungy. Our hearts are with him and his family today.

Columbia is 5-2, but has been off for 13 days; their losses are 67-66 vs Army, 83-71 at Wagner so they haven't exactly had a difficult schedule.

Northern Iowa has already beaten LSU in Vegas; they've won 6 games in row and are 9-1 this season, losing only 68-61 at Iowa State. Dayton is 8-4, but got whacked by Cincinnati last night, in revenge game for UC. It was just second loss in last eight games for Flyers.

Houston got into top 25, then lost games at South Alabama and UNLV; they do have win at LSU, but are just 3-3 vs D-I outfits. Coogs are 0-2 as a favorite. North Texas is 2-3 vs D-I teams, and are picked for fifth in Sun Belt. UNT is 1-2 as underdog, with Ls 70-52 at UNCW, 83-67 at Arizona State, 72-70 at Texas A&M.

UCSB lost four of last five games vs D-I teams and struggled to beat Sonoma by point Tuesday; they're 0-4 on road, with losses 83-66 at UNC, 73-57 at Arizona State, 77-60 at LMU, and 66-54 at San Diego State. Fresno is 5-3, 4-0 at home, with wins over Cal Poly, Oregon State and Northridge.

Colorado State upset host Hawai'i last night, after 87-69 win over Western Michigan Tuesday; the extra day of rest between games 1,2 helps Colorado State.

Morehead State lost its last seven games vs D-I teams and is 0-4 in OVC, losing by 11,52,13,31 points; if they lost 92-40 at Murray State, could be long afternoon at UConn, where Anderson is eligible again. Huskies are 8-0, but have only two wins by more than 19 points: 86-44 over New Hampshire, 113-49 over Texas So

Iona is unbeaten with an 89-72 win at Iowa State; Gaels haven't played in 12 days, since 79-76 MAAC win at Marist- they're 3-0, with win at Fordham (71-70). Kentucky is 7-3 and hasn't played since 73-61 win over Louisville six days ago; they're 2-3 vs good teams they've played, beating West Virginia 80-66.

Siena, UMass have both been off for over 10 days; Saints won four of last five games for surprising 4-3 record, despite no guys over 6-6 in their rotation. Minutemen are 3-3, losing at UConn, Davidson and UAB; best team they've beaten is Boston U. The UMass hope is that 6-8 Freeman has big game; Siena didn't try to recruit him, even though he grew up 10 miles from them.

Manhattan won its last five games vs Fordham, winning the last two at this site, 90-77/82-72; Jaspers are just back from road trip to play North Dakota State (76-62), South Dakota State (73-70, in OT), giving Manhattan four-game win streak. Buckeyes do not have anything to look ahead to; they can name score here.

Eastern Washington went to Cal Poly last year and won, 76-61, as 3-point dogs; Eastern gave Gonzaga a good game last week, losing 75-65 as 18-point dogs, after also covering big number vs Washington, but they're expected to win here, winning 70-48 in only home game vs D-I team, vs Northridge.

UCLA was life-and-death to beat pretty good Wagner team on Wednesday, 74-72; Bruins are 9-1, losing 88-80 vs Memphis in NYC. Sacramento State is 7-4; they lost 82-74 at Nevada, a team similar to UCLA; none of their four losses are by more than nine points. Howland's teams tend to struggle vs lesser foes.

                          Saturday's only lined game:
Louisville played easy early season schedule, then got whacked 73-61 at Rupp Arena Saturday; Cardinals are 9-1, winning pair of games in their tourney during week; best team they've beaten is probably Akron (113-85). Detroit is 6-6, losing 66-65 at Ohio on Thursday, after scraping by Chicago State 68-65 Monday. They are 1-3 vs spread as an underdog this season.
