      TEXAS SPORTSWIRE:

      PITTSBURGH (17-25) at ARIZONA (19-23)

      PIT S TORRES -R (2-1, 3.63 ERA) vs ARI C CAPUANO -L (0-1, 5.40 ERA)

The Pirates and the Diamondbacks continue their weekend series in Arizona. In Friday's game, Randall Simon hit a three-run homer off Matt Mantei in the 12th inning to give the Pirates an 8-5 victory over the Diamondbacks as +140 road underdogs. Mantei (3-2), pitching his second inning, walked Brian Giles with one out, then Aramis Ramirez singled just beyond the glove of third baseman Matt Williams. Simon hit Mantei's first pitch into the right-field seats for his fourth home run of the season. As he trotted around the bases, he exchanged words with Mantei and both dugouts were warned by the umpires. Brian Boehringer (1-1) pitched a scoreless 11th to get the victory. Mike Williams, the sixth pitcher used by the Pirates, pitched the 12th to get his 11th save in 13 opportunities. Luis Gonzalez hit a two-run, 434-foot home run and Rod Barajas and Carlos Baerga added solo shots to rally the Diamondbacks from a five-run deficit. But Arizona got only one hit after the eighth inning. Arizona got off to a sloppy start to its 10-game homestand with two errors, along with a passed ball that allowed a run to score, as Pittsburgh built a 5-0 lead after 4 innings. Kenny Lofton homered off Miguel Batista on the second pitch of the game to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, equaling the longest in the National League this season and one shy of his career best. The Pirates snapped a six-game road losing streak and won for just the third time in 14 games overall. Baerga had a two-out, RBI single in the fifth, followed by what might have been the longest home run Gonzalez has hit at Bank One Ballpark. It sailed far over the 413-foot sign in right-center and landed down a walkway to make it 5-3. Pirates starter Kip Wells, who also doubled, scored a run and singled in another, allowed two hits in four scoreless innings before getting in trouble in the fifth. He settled down to pitch a scoreless sixth and left with a 5-3 lead. But reliever Joe Beimel, who had allowed one home run in his 17 innings up to that point, gave up solo shots to Barajas and Baerga in the seventh, the latter with two outs, as Arizona tied it at 5. Jack Wilson led off the fifth with a standup triple, then scored on Giles' single to put the Pirates up 5-0. Lofton now has 26 leadoff home runs in his career. Tonight's pitching matchup features Salomon Torres for the Pirates against Chris Capuano for Arizona. Torres is making his fifth and what could be his final start in place of the injured Josh Fogg. Torres is coming off his first defeat of the season. In five innings against the Astros on Monday, Torres allowed three runs in a 9-4 Bucs loss. The left-handed Capuano will be making his first-ever big-league start exactly one year to the day after having Tommy John surgery. Capuano has appeared in two games since being called up from Triple-A Tucson.
