            Las Vegas Bowl, Dec 22
Cal was 5-0 at one point this season, despite losing starting QB to broken leg in first game of season; they stumbled to 2-4 finish, changed QBs again, so their 3rd-stringer is now leading an offense that scored more than 20 points only twice in last five games. Bears lost to BYU in both '99 and '01, last time Cougars got to a bowl game. Cal ran ball for 212 yards a game over last four games, would expect them to do that here, as well. Six of last eight Cal games stayed under the total. Bears were beaten by all three bowl teams they faced this year (USC, UCLA, Oregon). We respect Tedford as a coach, but his Bears flopped badly in bowl this year, and are markedly worse team this season, although last year's loss was more a product of disappointment over not getting into BCS Bowl.

BYU is in first bowl in four years under first-year HC Mendenhall; they play every other year in Vegas, and brought 10,000 fans (who says Mormons don't like to gamble?) to 55-14 win over UNLV Nov 5. After a 20-3 season opening loss to Boston College, BYU's defense was culprit in their remaining losses, allowing 51,31,49 and 41 points in their other setbacks. They lost to TCU, despite scoring 50 points!!!!

Cal has three senior starters on OL; they like to run the ball, and will try to hide Levy's deficiencies by doing just that. BYU gave up 300,224,267 rushing yards in three of its last four games, winning those games only because they were +11 in turnovers in those three contests. Cal was -8 in turnovers in its last two losses, but that was with shaky Ayoob under center. With steadier Levy under center, I'm guessing Cal runs ball down BYU's throats and wins going away.

Poinsettia Bowl, San Diego, Dec 22
Navy coach Johnson is one of best coaches in nation; how else to explain how service academy can play in three consecutive bowls, scoring 34+ points in six different games this season? Middies are 7-4, losing their first two games by FG, and then losing to pair of bowl teams, Rutgers (31-21), Notre Dame (42-21). They run ball down your throat and dare you to stop them; few can, as they gained at least 207 rushing yards in every game, and 418 vs Tulane, 239 vs Notre Dame, 301 vs Rice, 246 vs Maryland. You play Navy, you better bring a full effort for sixty minutes. Navy beat Air Force of Mountain West 27-24 on Oct 8; Colorado State had beaten them 41-23 the week before.

Colorado State allowed 87 points in losing its first two games (Colorado, Minnesota) then regrouped to win five of six, before losing two of last three, with their 30-10 home loss to San Diego State their most disturbing outcome. Their run defense was poor, as only pass-happy Nevada ran for less than 155 yards against them. In last four games, CSU allowed 191-251-196-190 rushing yards, a definite red flag when opposing Navy. But Lubick is an icon in Fort Collins because he is smart; with a month to prepare, Rams will be OK.

San Diego is a Naval town, so Middies will have the crowd. Navy's biggest problem is that they are so one-dimensional, in a bowl, you have lot more time to work on what needs to be done, which helps Coach Lubick's Rams. Middies did not beat a team with a winning record this season. Colorado State missed a bowl last year for first time in six years; think they're excited to be here, and are worth a look getting points.

Thursday's List of 13: on Tim Floyd, baseball, scumweasels
              13) Are there any professional athletes in team sports who don't have agents? Would it be dumb to negotiate your own contract, and save the 4% fee, and just ask for things you want? I mean, this guy Scott Boras must make more than anyone in baseball, and that doesn't seem right, since his only skill is hoodwinking players that they need him to get rich, when they'd get a fortune with him or without him.

              12) Colorado senior QB Joel Klatt, recently ripped the NCAA for not protecting players more from violent hits on the field, the way the NFL has. Klatt said the NCAA cares more about preventing showboating than preventing injuries. Young man has a point.

              11) After three quarters Tuesday, Kobe Bryant had 62 points, Dallas had 61. Number one, can't blame Don Nelson for this one; number two, ABC is grateful for the extra publicity with Heat-Lakers on Christmas Day.

              10) Not only does Tim Floyd look like Dennis Quaid, he has USC at 7-2 going into tonight's game vs North Carolina; give the guy credit; he can coach the college game. His pro experience wasn't good, but neither was Pitino's, for the most part. Trojans will be in NCAA's next season.

              9) My dad loves baseball best, and he argues, probably correctly, that things aren't as good as they used to be in baseball, but since he roots for the Mets, he doesn't care so much about the inequities that free agency without a salary cap has wrought.

              8) Unlike most businesses, sports needs good competition to survive; without competitive games, the sport isn't interesting. Part of the reason golf and NASCAR have put a dent into baseball's hold on American summers is that, in many parts of America, the local team has no realistic chance to win consistently, and that's no fun.

              7) I mean, was there a rush for Royals' tickets when they signed Doug Mientkiewicz and Mark Grudzielanek? (How about the poor souls that cover the Royals who have to type those two names all next summer?)

              6) Think Pirate fans are fired up they got Sean Casey? He's a good player, but his numbers will go down, now that he's out of that shoebox the Reds play in, and the Bucs had to give up a pitcher to get him.

              5) While Boston and Bronx escalate their spending wars, trying to keep up with each other on the back pages of the tabloids, poor Tampa Bay has to play 38 games against those two next year. Their biggest move this winter was trading away Dewon Brazelton. Good luck in '06, fellas.

              4) My favorite team, the A's, had to overpay for Esteban Loaiza because they have to trade Barry Zito soon, and they traded for Milton Bradley because teams pitch around their only legitimate slugger, Eric Chavez. Bradley is more likely to punch an umpire than he is to lead the A's into the playoffs. Oakland had plenty of other sluggers, but they all became free agents and left.

              3) I don't begrudge athletes getting rich, to a point, but that point is when a teacher makes $50,000 a year, Alex Rodriguez makes $17,000 an inning, that's when there's a problem.

              2) Big Dawg points out that the whole Damon issue indicates one sad fact: Fans care a hell of a lot more about winning and rivalries than players do. The Players' Union is just one big rich guys' fraternity. Too bad they let parasite scumweasel lawyers get rich off them, too, because they don't earn their fortunes.

              1) My first memory of agents as a kid, was after Vide Blue's great '71 season; he had an agent named Gertz who asked for $125,000, a huge amount then, but Vida only wanted $75,000. Charlie Finley offered $50,000, Vida held out until Memorial Day, signed for $63,000, went 6-10 that year, and was never the same again, although he did have a very good career.

Point is, lawyers screw things up, adding an additional unnecessary layer of greed, and without them, sports would be a better place
