        Morning... Thanks Buddy ...

GMAC Bowl, 12/21 @ Mobile, AL
Texas-El Paso was headed toward first-ever C-USA title game, then they lost last two regular season games, allowing 75 pts, with 12 turnovers, so they lost out to Tulsa, whom they had beaten 41-38 Nov 5. Miners averaged almost 48,000 fans a game this year, so they should bring fans to Mobile, where they face Toledo of MAC (MAC teams covered this bowl the last four years). UTEP in bowl for second year in row under Price they lost 33-28 to Colorado last year, as a favorite in Houston Bowl.

Carson Palmer's brother is UTEP's QB; he threw seven picks in last two games, making their 8-3 mark with a lousy turnover ratio even more impressive. Toledo is in bowl for fourth time in last five years, but previous three were all in Detroit, so they have to be happy to be somewhere warm. Rockets were 2-2 in last four games and got smoked 44-14 at Fresno on Sept 27; they allowed 62 second half points in their last two games, a 35-17 home loss to Northern Illinois and 44-41 win at Bowling Green. Toledo covered just two of eight games as a favorite this year, 0 for 4 away from home. Both teams have solid, veteran QBs.

When a team is favored for first time all year, or dog for first time all year, like to play the dog in those games. UTEP is dog for first time this year, so despite fact that favorite covered last three GMAC bowls, winning by 23,21,17 points, I say UTEP is right side here, although if the weather is good, over is stronger than the Miners.

Clemson is 10-0, with 82-63 win over South Carolina their best win; they hammered Holy Cross Tuesday. Tigers have three starters back from 16-16 club that was hot at end of last season and has carried the good play over to this season. Akron is 4-2 vs D-I teams, losing 89-75 at Cal, 111-85 at Louisville; they allowed 62,61,61,72 points in their four D-I wins.

Louisville played soft early schedule, then went to Rupp and got spanked by Kentucky Saturday, 73-61; four of their 7 wins are by 17+ points. Cardinals' non-league schedule is really weak, in first season as Big East team. Charleston is 1-3 vs D-I teams, with losses vs Charleston Southern (82-77), at NC-Greensboro (72-58) and at VCU. Cougars are down somewhat. This event is named after Pitino's late brother-in-law; they always win it.

Wednesday's List of 13: Thoughts after nite of D-I hoops
                13) ****** Damon's signing with the Bronx baseball team is another sign that Bud Selig's sport has turned into another version of professional wrestling. I expect the Undertaker to be coaching third base for the Red Sox in April, and I'm not sure if I'm kidding about that. No one has any loyalty.

                12) By the way, is it now a rule that the Bronx centerfielder has to be unable to throw the ball 150 feet on the fly? First Bernie Williams, now Damon, who will prove to be a sellout by losing his long hair and beard, just like Jason Giambi.

                11) It irks me to write about baseball in December, but it has become so ridiculous, that it is too easy a target to ignore.

                10) On a happier note, I went a college hoop game Tuesday, taking in Albany-Binghamton, in America East action. This is one of the weakest leagues in D-I, but D-I it is, and it turned out to be a fun night out. The alma mater won, 70-65, getting their 1,000th win in program history.

                9) First of all, the thieves charge $4 to park (unless you want to use the lot that is a quarter mile away). For a school that is dying to attract fans, this is not such a great idea, although they probably make lot of money with it. Siena never charged to park at their on-campus games, and I am guessing the state of New York has more money than Siena. Just a guess.

                8) Ticket prices are $20/$9/$7; if you pay $20, you sit right on the court, like an America East version of Jack Nicholson, without starlets every 20 feet. If you pay $9, you sit in seat with a chairback, but for $2 less, you can sit in the same chair, because they're never filled. Always buy cheapest ticket, and go sit where you want. It pays to be a good consumer.

                7) Concession prices are fair, and food is pretty good, plus they let you eat in the gym, always a good thing.

                6) Albany's mascot is the Great Dane, a terrific mascot, but it is underused; they should be aggressive in getting their gear out there, since they have a unique nickname, like the Salukis or Anteaters or Wheatshockers. Just a suggestion.

                5) The uniforms have to go. Purple, gold and white are colors of the school; the home uniforms are gold, road uniforms are black with purple trim (truly a hideous set of duds). White at home, purple on road; simple is good, and play up the Great Dane logo. There you go, another problem solved.

                4) The basketball coach at UAlbany is Will Brown, a former community college coach who is in last year of his contract; apparently, he needs to win league, or else he gets canned. This is a difficult situation, as most every publication in America has picked Albany to win America East, and 95% of those writers couldn't name half the teams in the league; they just played follow the leader with whomever wrote the first article. Undue pressure can impede good results.

                3) Brown is still searching for his rotation of players; his star tonight was Jon Iati, who played nine minutes, but was in the game at the end and scored 13 points. No idea why he played so little, but this Lillis kid played 34 minutes, taking down 11 rebounds as a point guard; he had been averaging 13 mpg. Substitutions were erratic, partially because of foul trouble

                2) Has a basketball team from New York ever started two kids from Iowa? The Great Danes do; they also have kids from the following places: Texas-Chicago-Germany-New Jersey-York PA-Pittsburgh-California-Albany and 2 from New York City.

No wonder they're having trouble meshing as a unit; they come from many different regions and cultures. For Albany to have only three kids from New York State just isn't smart.

                1) The athletic director, whose first hire for this job was fired very quickly, sits up in the stands during the game like one of the Roman Emperors; he hardly clapped when Albany pulled out a close win in this game. You wonder, after he gave the women's coach a two-year contract extension, but didn't give Brown one, if he really wants him to succeed. Not like their women's program is Tennessee or Connecticut.
